Anyone heard the new BRMC album?

Posted about 5 years ago
All Music just gave it a pretty scathing review and then granted it 3.5 stars out of 5 (compared to 4 out of 5 for each of their previous albums) which sounds like the reviewer dislikes them more than they dislike the album. But, I think I'd prefer to hear what other MOGgers think. So, what's the word?

  6. Dale says I've had it since March, and it's a slight step below the debut album. It has two of their best noise-fests, a beautiful ballad, and the penultimate track makes a perfect call-and-response to "Salvation" from the debut. Um, watch my space, I'll post a full review tomorrow.

  12. Dale says Since I can't make my own post yet, I'll give you a sneak peek of the review I'll be posting later: BRMC came along for me when there was a real hole in my musical existence, a lack of feedback-drenched new music. The Jesus and Mary Chain had broken up, and no one had really taken on their gauntlet, until the first time I ever heard "Love Burns" and just knew that this was a band whose output I could love. If you haven't done so, check out the debut album, it's a relentless rock beast from the opening salvos of "Love Burns", "Red Eyes And Tears", and "Whatever Happened To MY Rock And Roll?". The first listen to "Stop" from their second album Take Them On, On Your Own, was instant love. I immediately put that song on heavy rotation on mixes and my MP3 player. The rest of the album drifted away from my attention, though, as not much of the other songs stuck in my brain. Any momentum from "Stop" was also lost in intra-band squabbling, headed by the expulsion of drummer Nick Jago from the band. After experimenting with more traditional American musics on their last album Howl, the snarling rock beast of BRMC is back with Baby 81. Oh, they've still held onto some of the things they learned from their detour, but they've been integrated into their sound. "Took Out A Loan" is the sound the BRMC rock beast makes as it wakes up, stretches, and rumbles to life. In other words, fair warning for what's ahead. It certainly appears that they're rediscovered feedback again, to our benefit. Favorite lyric snippet, courtesy of "Berlin": "I'm fighting just to breathe as I get up off my knees, help me somebody, HELP ME SOMEBODY!" "Weapon of Choice" is the lead single, and establishes all they do so well, in a digestible format. One of my favorite things that they indulge in here is the vocal harmonies on the bridge; nice! "666 Conducer" shows that they haven't forgotten the neo-blues they worked with Howl, as filtered through Spiritualized. Nuyce! Check out the organ intro to "All You Do Is Talk", it's breath-takingly gorgeous. The killer chorus ends with "You're lucky words don't bleed." Is there a soul alive that doesn't get a rise out of an audible "1-2-3-4" count, especially when followed by low fuzz bass like a kick to the gut as in "Need Some Air"? When I see them live, I fully expect the mosh pit to be hopping for this song. "Killing The Light" marries classic rock with falsetto vocals, and yes, we're all broken hearted. "American X" tells it like it is. More lyrical goodness: "You share your young with the wolves of the nation, there's nothing left, hey, pray for salvation."

  14. 1234chainsaw says The debut is the gold standard for B.R.M.C. I'm sorry to say that so far the new one is bringing out the meh in me (to borrow Kate's lovely expression - credit where credit is due).

  15. funkybarb says Yes, I meant to post that review in the Star as well ... I came across it after this post ... read it and then promptly forgot to post. I read a lot of that writer's stuff and generally agree with his views. Thanks for posting.
