christmas bonus (tracks)

Posted over 5 years ago
i think i've got a new musical-listening endeavor ahead of me, which may change my appreciation of certain records. in the past, i've always been a HUGE fan of bonus tracks on the whole, filling a cd with as much to make my bucks worthwhile...but i've noticed that although i really appreciate having these bonuses, they really do detract from the album experience, despite a few exceptions.what got me on about this was Bauhaus' second record, Mask, and my recent listening on a train commute this morning. attached to the end of the record is the Searching for Sartori ep, which although very good and notable in its own merit, takes away from the brilliant ten tracks preceeding it. Mask is a pretty damn solid work, but it's tough to enjoy the power of it with totally different tracks tacked on the end.well, usually if i found this to be a problem with cds, i'd just turn the record off where it should end...or just deal with it, but i'm thinking these days that for listening consumption, i may make separate playlists for all these supposed 'bonus tracks' and just keep the albums in their proper sequence from beginning to end, as intended. this is all means tedious reorganization in regards to itunes/playlists/ipod, but i can only see it adding to the listening experience. how do you kids feel about bonus tracks on the whole? yay or nay? show all work.

  1. Kate says I say yay for bonus tracks. I do think that they generally mess up the continuity of an album, but I just make a playlist and separate the album from the bonus tracks. I have an album by the '80's English group Miaow, and the bonus track on that album is a killer version of King Creole by Cath Carroll and Steve Albini.
