Take Back Your Letters, Take Two

Posted about 5 years ago
Tommy Keene rocked my world when I was a wide-eyed freshman working at the college radio station in the spring of 1984. Take Back Your Letters was a power pop classic that stood in sharp contrast to the hardcore romps that peppered our daily playlists. KJHK had a copy of the single on tape cartridge. Years later when I purchased Songs From the Film I heard the re-recorded version and it didn't compare to the tinny, scratchy cart we played into the ground. I'll make do with the studio version I have now, but my heart belongs to the genius on cart.Oh sure, in 1984 we aired the Sex Pistols, the Method Actors, Replacements and more, but out here in Kansas, we enjoyed a special relationship with The Embarrassment, Jason and the Nashville Scorchers, and Mr. Tommy Keene, forged by those who came before me, like Blake Gumprecht and Kim Buie. This was a fact not lost on Keene. He never forgot the chance Blake and Kim took with his record, and he said as much in an interview we did a couple of years later, mentioning them by name. Tommy Keene rocked my world again. And I'll never forget it.

  1. mousetrap says Ooh, "Take Back Your Letters" -- thank you! For me, it was "Places That Are Gone" that overshadowed the other tunes on "Songs From The Film"...so in my hazy memory I'd managed to forget what a great songs "Letters" is. Your post served as a welcome reminder that it's definitely time for a private little KeeneFest here in mousetrapland. Dig that crazy power pop!
