Nina Nastasia & Jeffrey Lewis

Posted over 5 years ago
Went to see Nina Nastasia at the Scala a few weeks ago. Was amazed at how good the gig was, given it was a fairly last-minute thing to go. She's not a natural raconteur, but came across much like she did in her sessions with john peel - nervous, giggly and slightly more in control than she immediately appears. Anyhow, a four-piece behind her put out a lot more volume than her sparser songs might suggest, and barring some intermittent feedback, all sounded great. Jeffrey Lewis was support, and just charmed the pants off me. I only knew one song, off an Anti-Folk compilation, but he came across well with humour and fragility interspersed. I did see a fairly negative review of the gig somewhere, but i can't remember if it was online or in a magazine, so i'm interested if anyone else was there and how they found it.
