I've been listening to Balduin's 2001 debut album
Creative Cookery Set. It was released in 2001 on Germany's Crippled Dick Hot Wax label. Balduin is from Switzerland. I've had my eye on this one since it came out but I never got it. I really wish I hadn't waited. A lot of reviews make comparisons to say that Balduin is a master chef when it comes to cooking up a tasty tune. I can agree with that. This album cooks! There's a lot of loop and delay shenanigans at work here. According to
The Story of Balduin he's been at it since the age of 8. He only has two albums and and EP so far. He's been making music for years though. You can check out older works on his website
http://www.reitschule.ch/balduin/. Balduin is apparently influenced by psychedelic pop/rock, sunshine pop, jazz, film music, and techno. His beats remind me a lot of Wagon Christ's beats because they are so tight. One thing I like about this album is how crisp all of the sounds sound. Sometimes when artists use samples the quality of sound can get pretty muddy. He makes them all sound really fresh. Fresh ingredients make for a good cook. I also had fun looking at his blog
http://balduin.wordpress.com/. He has some cool pictures of old video game advertisements, old synths, and just other bits of fun things to look at. I'll definitely be purchasing his second self-titled album. This one was delicious.
