MOG MOG

BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

(37)

I was looking for a song about assholes this morning and I found I had 3 with that word in the title. I noticed that Martha Wainwright's song "Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole" was in the 2008 SXSW Showcasing Artists group. I forgot all about her 2005 self-titled album. I really quite liked it. I know every post and article has to mention that she is Rufus Wainwright's sister and daughter of Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle so I'm doing it too. Did you know that Loudon Wainwright III also had a daughter named Lucy Roche by Suzzy Roche of the Roches fame? I didn't till just now. I also didn't realize that Robert Fripp produced the first Roches album (which I think is crazy awesome). Anyway back to Martha. She's got this really great warm smoky "I've smoked too much whisky" kind of voice. Her lyrics are really quite nice too. If you missed her album I recommend it. She's got a new one coming out in June of this year. It's probably time to get her first album so you can be all snobbish about it before she hits big with the new one.

She reminds me a little of Marianne Faithful.

She totally does. Marianne after her voice went out.

I believe that Fripp did the first three Roches albums - then the label decided that the reason their albums weren't selling well was that they were three gurrls doing their own songs and mostly their own backing instrumentals with an artsy-fartsy producer and their fourth is overprodced by some studio hack with a whole bunch of session men providing the instrumentals.

And Loudon Wainwright produced at least one album for Richard Thompson.

Thanks for the info fairportfan. That's pretty interesting. I only have their first album but not the others. I did hear a later one but I hated it. It all comes back to Fairport Convention!

Sturgell we all have at least once. Earthman but her picture is so pretty. Shud33 and Dale there's a line in Beck's "Cold Ass Fashion" where he says that he can "smoke a pack of whiskey with Jesus Christ". That's always stuck in my head.

Talk about your dead skunk in the middle of the road, now I know what killed him - it was smokin' that whiskey! This is great stuff Sam! A bit of a departure for you? Almost , uh, normal?? Open another fifth and light er up!!

Lizzie I think she's hit it a time or two. She is Canadian so she must be drinking Crown or Canadian Club.

Scott it is surprising but I do listen to a lot more than Japanese music. Although I think I have a good 20+ posts left to go on that. :) I like to mix everything up in general except alcohol. That's bad news!

I saw her for the first time live on stage with her brother 3 years or so ago. She has a certain presence and her voice possesses an undeniable "raspiness" which is most alluring.

Nice spotlight on an original artist.

ooh that must've been a cool show. Her voice is quite alluring. I'm looking forward to the new album. It's been a while since this one.

Did a couple of Martha-centric posts over the past two years. I've been quite smitten for a while. That said, I'm shocked - shocked! - that you don't mention her greatest song (so far), the one that first seduced me: "When the Day is Short."

Great video Mike. It certainly does smite the eyes but in a good way. Thank you for rectifying my shortcomings. :)
