MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Artist:
Album: Black Snake Diamond Role
(33)

Finally got Black Snake Diamond Role by Robyn Hitchcock. It's his 1981 solo debut. I love Robyn Hitchcock. I think the guy is a genius. Every time I get an album by him I get so mentally satisfied and inspired. This one is definitely not a disappointment. My favorite song on the album is track 1 "The Man Who Invented Himself". It's crazy but I feel a strong connection to the man Robyn's singing about in this song. The album is loaded with top notch trippy pop music (as you might expect). I really got to get the albums I'm missing now. Monsieur Hitchcock never fails to please.

I remember seeing this video on MTV and wondering who the heck was behind it. OK, it was popular, but at least it wasn't "Balloon Man".

Hitchcock's '80s output is brilliant. His more recent work has been more of a hit-and-miss for me, I'd have to say, but that maybe because I'm less into the acoustic folk strand of his work (the Venus 3 stuff is an exception to that, of course). So it's no wonder that from Black Snake Diamond Role my pick would be "Brenda's Iron Sledge." I'll finally get a chance to see him when he opens up for Nick Lowe in April.

The first Robyn Hitchcock album I ever heard/bought is still my favorite, "Eye", which I bought a couple of years ago used on vinyl (and which is now re-released and expanded on the "I Wanna Go Backwards" box set). The man is definitely brilliant--I will be going to see him and Nick Lowe at the El Rey next month as well!
