Saravah was a French record label that was started in 1965 by Pierre Barouh. Pierre may be most famous for being in the movie _Un Homme et Une Femme_ and signing on the soundtrack with Nicole Croisille. Café Après-Midi put out this compilation from Saravah records archives. It features songs that are not so well known in France and compiles a nice range of jazz, Bossa Nova, Samba, and African inspired music. The compilation features quite a number of songs by Pierre Barouh. Pierre's worked on films and documentaries and has written some plays. In 1980 he did two albums in Japan that had little success in France but had a great response in Japan. He moved there and set up a Saravah office and continues to work there. Currently his son Benjamin has the duty of running Saravah. There is also a part two to this disc that was released by Café Après-Midi.

Nicole Croisille was a ballet dancer, mime, and singer. She's had projects all over the world for stage, movies, and has made several albums. She still continues to make music to this day and is quite popular.

Barney Wilen was a French Jazz tenor saxophonist from Nice. He's worked with Miles Davis and Thelonius Monk. In the 60's he put out a jazz rock album that was all about Timothy Leary. He died in '96 from breast cancer. He was 59. The track I'm posting was taken from his album _Moshi_. The album was a result of him taking filmmakers, technicians, and musicians to Africa to record the music of pygmy tribes.

Pierre Akendengué was born in Gabon, Africa. At a time Gabon was a part of French Equitorial Africa. Pierre studied psychology at the University of Caen in France during the 60's. Don't know too much else about his music but based on this song alone I'd like to hear more.

This looks like a very decent compilation. I've just been looking for their label website (in french) and thanks god they have a 56k version, that I'll have a closer look at, when beeing at home again. I liked most "Zombizar" of Barney Wilen. On their website one can listen to the new album of Pierre Barouh - Daltonien -, that sounds very nice. It sounds like a new kind of chanson, that incorporates a lot of untypical instruments and sounds - untypical for chansons, as far as I can judge that, and I would say, that I can't ;). Very nice post. Thanks a lot for the link to this label.

I like it. Thanks for the link to Saravah's website. I didn't even think to link it. I like that Barney Wilen song too. I want to track down that _Moshi_ album and his Leary tribute. The idea of a French jazz/rock Leary tribute sounds right up my alley. Glad you liked the post Hermes. More to come.

lovely x 4! my personal favorite is Barney Wilen - i think i am going to extremely like him so major thanks! - but all other three are close seconds.

one quirk of Cambodia is that, despite the utter lack of CDs, there is plenty of popular French music to go around, the country being a former French colony and all. the compilations aren't all that but there are always gems to be found. so far i've got one of the Saint Germain des Prés Café nu-jazz compilations (named after the abbey in Paris), which are like the French equivalent of Starbucks compilations, i think? ;D

How fun poebegone. That makes since. Funny while I was researching this I read that Nicole Croisille got her singing start in underground cafe's in the bohemian Saint Germain area. My how the cafe music has changed. I think my locally owned coffee shop never tires of playing Tom Waits and Bob Dylan.
