WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Help a brother out.

Posted over 2 years ago
Hey peeps I need some help. I'm trying to put together a mix cd for my wife. She had to quit her job recently and I'm putting together a super awesome mix cd for her to listen to in the car. I need help though cause I can't think of enough new stuff for her to listen to. I've got some songs from fellow moggers posts (Chucky, Hermes,Neill) but I need more. So far I've got:Captain Comatose - Up In FlamesThe Ting Tings - That's Not My NameTiger Army - As The Cold Rain FallsLe Tone - Joli DragonTorpedo Boyz (not sure which track yet)Peter, Bjorn and John - Young FolksSimian Mobile Disco - It's the BeatBalkan Beat Box (not sure which track)Bitman and Roban (not sure either)That's what I got so far but I know it's enough for a whole cd. I thought maybe you could help me with something maybe a little outside of my focus that would be fun rockin (but not heavy) and summery. For some reason most of what I'm listening to lately is very introspective and not so much cheerful. Not really carefree. I'm open to all suggestions. Got a favorite track you've been listening to lately? I'd love to know. I need to be EMCD'd here.

  1. The Serenity Vortex says Fistula when you say fun rocking do you mean actual Rock or anything funky and fresh, with a bit of fun? You are one cool dude, it's a nice thing to do!!

  2. ivylander says Define "new." New as in came-out-in-the-last-three-months or new as in never-heard-it-before? As you know, I don't listen to much of anything unless it's got at least an inch of dust on it....

  4. Lizziegreeneyes says You got any Amy Correia - sister IS summer to me... Also Fathead are pretty sweet - old school band from the Philadelphia area ! Give your wife a hug for me - that sucks hardcore !!! Also - Mundy, Tadhg Cooke are two favorites of mine from Ireland - both have some really great summery songs !!!

  5. fistula spume says Anything funky and fresh and/or rockin. I'll include rock or electronic or whatever you got. Just not straight up techno. She needs some vocals. I miss out on a lot of things she likes sometimes as my focus is pretty broad and sometimes weird. I got her the last Shins album and she totally loves that. She has a pretty broad range. I've just not ventured into new rock for the both of us as there's just too much to listen to. I completely missed out on most "best of albums" last year and I'm pretty sure I'm missing them this year.

I made a cd like this for my self 4 years ago and I swear that's what got me a job and it was a mix of all sorts from island music to techno to indy rock to whatever. Help a brother out. I'm going to check those out Lizzie. Tanx!

  10. Lizziegreeneyes says Fathead might be harder to find - I have one of their live & I think only albums - but they are still fresh - definitely funky... I can get them up on multiply. Tadhg Cooke... Roadmap - more in the vein of Shins than harder rockin - but the kid is smooth as a Cuban cigar... & far less toxic ;) I can't even put up the shite they got passing for Amy... I can get some of hers up as well ! Here's one of my favorites: Mundy & the song's called July... two bonuses (since it's almost July that is) ;) "CLICK HERE":http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=25636242 It's his Myspace page - but it has the full version... Youtube once again sucking my... well I am a lady & I won't go there ;)

  11. carmensandiego says I'm in the same situation as your wife, so maybe I can give you a good perspective. Here are a few songs that break through my joblessness and make me sing and do that kind of seat dance one does when they're not in a position to stand. (Also makes other drivers stare at me, but who cares about them.) New Pornographers - All For Swinging You Around Caitlin Cary - Pony Alejandro Escovedo - Break This Time George Harrison - Blow Away (not new, I know, but damn...) Manu Chao - Desaparecido (don't know how she is about music in a foreign language, but I loved this even when I didn't know the words)

  14. Mike the Knife says If you don't already know about her, I'd recommend ex-Ash guitarist Charlotte Hatherley and something off her second (most recent) solo album, which was produced by Eric Drew Feldman (formerly of Cap'n Beefheart's Magic Band, PJ Harvey, etc.) and features a guest shot by Andy (XTC) Partridge who also co-authored a song on the collection. Here's the way-cool vid for "Behave":

  21. kristiana says I second the Feist album, but I would throw on the tracks "I Feel It All" and "Sea Lion Woman". Emily Haines/Metric is great too! "Empty", "Patriarch On A Vespa" (Metric), "Nothing&Nowhere", "The Lottery", "Winning" (ok, these ones aren't upbeat, but they're real real nice.) And some songs from Modest Mouse, "Good News For People Who Love Bad News", Float On, One Chance. And some Breeders!

  30. Hermes says Huh, now this is a post. I studied the playlist and would say a bit of Gogol Bordello could combine fine with the Balkan Beats and they have the hell of lyrics sometimes. I just don't have it with me, but there were a few posts on Gogol Bordello, and if you want, I'll post my favorite ones. Another direction that has no rock at all and has much less beats that everything you've put into that mix until now would be "Spring & Friends". But it has one advantage: It's sweet as hell. So sweet, that I might get diabetes, if I listen to much to it, but ALL women I know, digged it a lot, and the one I got it from used it for heightening the mood in the morning, though she was a real bass lady, when clubbing. I'll wanted to post this anyway, so I'll do it a little bit faster. Online in maybe up to 10 hours.

  32. ciphermedia says I've just looked through iTunes, and realised that I've been listening to lots of glitchy and more experimental stuff lately. However, from the vaults, this is old, but definitely funky. 23 Skidoo - 'Vegas' "(my Funky Friday post last week)":http://mog.com/ciphermedia/blog_post/87730 or 'Coup' "(an old post of mine here)":http://mog.com/ciphermedia/blog_post/50715 More recent, but still very upbeat, CODA - "Soundscape To a Fantastical Dream":http://mog.com/ciphermedia/blog_post/64019 and "More Fantastical Soundscapes - CODA Live at The Factory Theatre in Sydney.":http://mog.com/ciphermedia/blog_post/81542 Hmmm, have just realised they're all instrumentals. Not sure what that says about me. But they're all excellent, upbeat tracks. Okay, more recent, and with gorgeous vocals, and very textured & layered instruments, Decoder Ring. I was going to post you a track of theirs but Mog's having a tanty & won't upload. The tracks on my old post ("Gorgeous Soundscapes Meet The Pulsating Edge of Electro Dance)":http://mog.com/ciphermedia/blog_post/59530 are more moody, but otherwise the tracks I'd recommend that are upbeat are: Jets, Out of Range, To Die, and Fractions "all available on emusic here":http://www.emusic.com/album/Decoder-Ring-Fractions-MP3-Download/10944483.html

  33. Hermes says Spring is a (french?) singer or a band, I don't know exactly. And "Spring & Friends" is the name of the album, if I remember right. When I'm back home, I'll do a post on this and you'll see. But how I said: it will take the drive out of that mix but could be a good opener.

Anyway, this would be my tactic for making girls happy. Wouldn't have fitted into the comment box ;): "Sweets for the girls #1":http://mog.com/Hermes/blog_post/89404: french elektro-pop -> Spring & Friends "Sweets for the girls #2":http://mog.com/Hermes/blog_post/89410: french beat & pop from the 60s "Sweets for the girls #3":http://mog.com/Hermes/blog_post/89430: latinamerican music "Gypsy Power":http://mog.com/Hermes/blog_post/89576: Gogol Bordello and the Gypsy Beats & Balkan Bangers compilation The last one doesn't only make the girls happy but also me, when I'm down. Raw and pure sound energy from the balkans. I hope you can use something. But after so many comments, the selection will get more difficult. If you should need more electro a la Captain Comatose, I have another producer team, that has a very similar style, and can be combined with the Captain quiet easily: Tiefschwarz. Tell me, what you need and you'll get it. I'm really looking forward for the mix tape.

Haven't seen that Cinematic Orchestra video but I wore that CD out when it came out. Good stuff. I still have half of these tracks to go through. I did find most of what you recommended and it was pretty great. I couldn't find a Fathead track though. I'm going to have to see how this thing takes shape once I get all the tracks together. I'm hoping to have it done by Saturday. Thanks for the suggestions and thoughts Lizzie.
