WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

I know this much is true

Posted over 2 years ago
I know a little of music and a lot of nothing. As evidenced by "this early post":http://mog.com/fistula_spume/blog_post/4318. I'm constantly finding music and constantly researching. All of that research never helps me to find what someone else recommends. This is especially true when it comes to my wife. I constantly hear a song somewhere and I'm like, "What the hell is this?" and she's all "Oh that's (insert band name here)!" I was a pretty big music nazi when I met her. She showed me the wonders of several albums that my parents or friends never introduced me to. I grew to like so many. She taught me to like some I didn't at first, and a lot I didn't know. Such as 10,000 Maniacs, It's A Beautiful Day, Weather Report, Steeleye Span, The Smiths, Bauhaus, Grateful Dead, Roxy Music, Yaz, Neil Young, Joan Armatrading, Cocteau Twins, and Annie Lennox... to name a few. I know some songs I might have heard eventually but she turned me on to them first, like Romeo Void's "Never Say Never" and The Nails "88 Lines about 44 Women". She does this all the time with music. A recent one that I'm totally digging which I should have heard of before, is the song I'm posting. I really like it a lot. They even have a greatest hits. Who new? I didn't. I hope you enjoy!

  1. ciphermedia says The Stranglers were an interesting band who couldn't ever really be pigeon-holed to any particular style, despite them often being associated with 70's Punk. 'Golden Brown' is a perfect example of how they really don't fit the mold, and is one of my favourite songs about heroin. Actually, it's probably in my all-time Top 50.

  2. fistula spume says I'm surprised I never heard of them before. I got 5 other songs and they all sound different from each other. Some sound like The Fall and others remind me of Robyn Hitchcock. I need to get some more. My wife of course knew a few tracks and was just surprised I had never heard of it. You never know if someone knows about something until you bring it up. Thanks for your response. This is a pretty great song.

  3. soulrocket says "No more heroes" is the album to check to stablish some comparations with Punk Rock. The band was called The UK Doors for a time because of the use of very rich keyboard lines that somehow recalls Phil Manzarek’s playing. A truly original band with a massive & loyal to death fan base in the uk..

  5. fistula spume says Thanks for the info soulrocket. That's very interesting. I think I'm going to pick up a couple albums. I really like what I've heard. I can see the keyboard lines being Doors-esque. I don't know why but the guitar line in "Golden Brown" reminds me of Robert Plant's "Crazy on a Ship of Fools". I know I'm hearing to much into that but it reminds me of that.

  6. fistula spume says Oh I didn't see your comment ookpik. I'm a big fan of any music that can find a way to integrate harpsichord. It's one of my favorite sounds.

  7. nicki says LOVE "Peaches." Makes me feel so delightfully smarmy, with visions of Ray Winstone dancing (?) in my head.
