WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Al Kooper

Give it up for "Al Kooper":http://www.alkooper.com/. Singer/songwriter/producer/musician extrodinaire. He organized Blood Sweat & Tears, played organ on Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" and played with Bob during the (in)famous Newport Folk Festival when he went electric, discovered Lynard Skynard, gave 15 year old prodigy Shuggie Otis his break on the "Kooper Sessions" album, has worked with hundreds of other artists, and has lended his organ to hundreds of songs. I don't like all of his music but he's a legend and I had to give him a shout out. Here's my favorite song by him. It's not indicative of his regular work but I really love this song. I'm glad you got back on your feet Mr. Kooper.

  1. deadmandeadman says Al Kooper has been there at so many pivitol moments in rock history its astounding. Along the way he's written himself quite a resume.

  4. fairportfan says He was music producer, selecting the original recordings for the sundtrack on the old *Crime Story* series, which was set in 1963 - 65, but most of the music used isn't on the DVDs, i understand, because of licensing problems. He wasn't too careful - couple of times they used tunes that weren't out yet at the time the episode was set. One of my girlfriends dated him - once - in Chicago in the Sixties.

  6. Mike the Knife says Do NOT forget that he was a pivotal member of the Blues Project ("Flute Thing," anyone? Monterey Pop? Cafe Au Go Go?), and played both piano and organ (brilliantly!) on the Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want." And if you haven't heard the wacky phone call to his parents wherein he uses a vocoder and tries to pass himself off as some kind of space alien, you should seek it out. It's a friggin' laugh-fest.
