WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

I blame my parents

Posted over 3 years ago
Hey Moggers. I've got a poll for you. I want to know what type of music your parents listened to. My parents were big fans of all things pop in the seventies. They liked disco, country, rock and whatever there was on the radio at that time. They didn't seem to be tied down to any one style. They just loved pop music. Some artists include: Sister Sledge, Pink Floyd, Hank Williams Jr, Bee Gees, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Merle Haggard, Eagles, Led Zepplin... You get the idea. So Moggers, what were you raised on?

  2. Anonymous says I think one's parents' age makes a difference. My parents were in their forties when I was born and they're in their seventies now. I grew up with big band jazz (Count Bassie, Glen Miller, Arty Shaw, Cab Calloway, etc.), jazz vocalists (Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday), and, perhaps oddly, traditional Japanese music (Kokufu kabu, shomyo, etc.) being played around the house. When my step-mother came into the picture, folkies like Joan Baez and Richie Havens started getting some airtime in the house. She also really liked the Pretty Paper era Willie Nelson. My sister and I hated that, though I think mostly out of teenage snottiness. I hadn't thought about it but It's funny to see how the music influenced me. I trained as a classical singer for a while and sang a lot of that Cole Porter, girl-draped-over-piano stuff. One of my first paid gigs was singing standards in the lounge of a resort hotel. And years after that I was fronting a classic country style band playing a Willie Nelson tune or two. Comes round goes round - I buy a Willie Nelson record for my step mother every christmas to make up for the ones we broke as kids. ;)

  3. fistula spume says I think age makes a definite difference. I think it's cool to see how people develop from where they came from. Parents usually have a big influence on that development.

  4. nicki says Thinking of my parents' taste in music is a little painful: they often knew what they liked, but never remembered (or paid attention to) who it was. The LP collection was definitely not extensive but was heavy on The Beatles. I also remember... Deodato George Winston Simon & Garfunkel CSN Seals & Crofts (barely played) Chad & Jeremy: Of Cabbages and Kings Back organ works (often played whilst vacuuming) As far as radio goes, I was subjected to soft rock and WNEW-AM ("The Make-Believe Ballroom" wasn't nearly as terrible). Once they got into CDs -- and, oddly enough, bought a six-CD changer for the car -- we listened to Paul Simon and Queen, plus some Carribean stuff they heard while in a taxi in Bermuda.

  5. Spencer Owen says I got some of my best taste from my parents. Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, Laurie Anderson. They listen to things I don't love, but I will always pride myself in always being able to share music with my folks and knowing they'll like it.

  6. fistula spume says You're a lucky man. As far as my family is concerned I'm from Mars. Somewhere around '90 my mom went country and never looked back. My brother was obsessed with speed metal growing up and now only seems to listen to satalite radio and soundtracks. Oh well. You don't always like what your family listens to but it still pushes you in some way. Even if it's the opposite way.

  7. lemontwist says My dad loves classic rock - Zeppelin, Who, Hendriz, Cream, Eagles, whatever. He also is a big fan of classical music. His musical taste is really what got me into rock music. He hates disco, pop music, rap, and anything that sounds like noise. My mom likes the stereotypical mom from the 1970s music. Joni Mitchell, Crosby Stills and Nash, Simon and Garfunkel, and all of that singer/songwriter stuff. She also listens to the Beatles a lot. Harry Chapin. I can't say that her musical tastes haven't impacted my life, but I tend to shy away from most of the kind of music she likes (it's just not intense/angry enough for me).

  8. LambCurry666 says This filled me with nostalgia. I remember from Dad: Beatles, Doors, Linda Ronstadt, Rachmaninoff, Gordon Lightfoot, Rolling Stones, Pure Prairie League (Amie is a classic - I used to play that record all the time, and by record I mean a big round thing played on a record player). I remember from Mom: Marvin Gaye, Steve Winwood, CSN, Paul Simon, Lovin' Spoonful, David Bowie (she took me to a show on the Serious Moonlight Tour in Hershey, PA where I first learned that a lot of people seem to share funny smelling little cigarettes at concerts).

  9. Anonymous says Wow, My dad was always listening to music. The Stones, The Carpenters, Fleetwood Mac, The Bee Gees, Roger Whitaker, Johnny Cash.....he wasn't so much into 70's pop but more of the Rock scene at the time. I don't remember much Floyd or Grateful Dead or Zeppelin though. I remember lots of The Four Tops, The Commodores, Dionne Warwick, The Supremes. Yeah, very varied taste.

  12. SWozniak says A bit of everything from their formative years. My mom's class song was 'Stairway to Heaven,' so that exposed me to Zeppelin in middle school. But we had the 'Good Morning Vietnam' 33 on the turntable when I was a kid, and I picked up a lot of my music from that - jazz with Louis Armstrong, oldies, and a tad of blues. We listened to a lot of oldies stations growing up, and I switched to classic rock because I was tired of the crap one hit wonder oldies, and the crap one hit wonder classic rock were more bearable to listen to. My mom was more of a fan of "soft rock" - the adult contemporary station that played the Celine Dion type of crap (AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH). And we listened to Garrison Keiller every weekend.

  23. essone says I remember alot of Dire Straits, Leonard Cohen, ZZ Top, and reggae. Its sad to see your parents get older and kind of lose interest in music. Maybe life gets to busy or something, but they don't really listen to music anymore. But whenver I ride in the car with them I can put just about anything on. My brother has no musical taste.

  24. jackrabbit says oh you lucky ones. I grew up with german pop-music (not that tyype you might think of, because it is not pop in the usual context), the german word is schlager. Artists you might know, only one: Engelbert Humperdingk or just Engelbert. The one that saved me, was Elvis and sometimes ABBA. Well the problem was/is that my parents are preferring to listen to such radio stations that define Elvis more in an Engelbert way. So there was no chance for more rocking stuff.

  25. Bawston Sean says My step-dad went to school to be a radio DJ but never but play the occasional church function after he graduated. That shaped how I interact with music for sure. I love playing new music for people, so that may be where it came from.

  26. fairportfan says My parents listened to big band and swing ... the Andrews Sisters and Spike Jones ... Benny Goodman and Les Brown and His Band of Renown. I suspect i'm a bit older than a lot of others here. (I remember a friend and myself laughing ourselves sick over the Incredibly Clever parodies of "Love Me Tender" we were improvising in the second grade...)
