WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

I'm having a Mog-In

This post goes out to "ookpik":http://mog.com/ookpik and her "Summer of Investigating International Psychedelia":http://mog.com/ookpik/blog_post/1738. I am a big fan of all things psychedelic and garage from the late 60's and 70's. My most recent compilations that I have got are Back to Peru: The Most Complete Compilation of Peruvian Underground 64-74, Love's a Real Thing: The funky fuzzy sounds of West Africa, and Cambodian Cassette Archives: Khmer Folk & Pop Music Vol. 1. I wanted to direct your attention if you haven't been there to "Turn Me On Dead Man's":http://www.turnmeondeadman.net/index.html list of "garage and psychedelic compilations":http://www.turnmeondeadman.net/ADM/GPC/GPCMain.html. It's a pretty excellent resource that points out a lot of comps that cover this area. I have gotten a few of these (Cicadelic 60's, Nuggets, Pebbles, Fuzz Flaykes & Shakes...) and they have all been pretty great. In particular for "ookpik":http://mog.com/ookpik I wanted to point out the "Love, Peace and Poetry":http://www.turnmeondeadman.net/ADM/GPCSeries/LovePeaceandPoetry.html series. I haven't gotten it yet but the reviews I've read looks promising. Each disc focuses on psychedelia from a particular country. So far there are eight discs covering, America, Latin America, Asia, Japan, Britain, Brazil, Mexico, and Africa. I'm definitely going to check these out. If you already have one or some of them let me know how they are. I also wanted to point out the "Psychedelic Music":http://www.psychedelic-music.com/ site which covers all manner of rare psych albums and comps.

  1. ookpik says This is fabulous, guy. Thanks for all the links! I hope your compilations turn out to be fun. I have the Asia edition of Love, Peace and Poetry, and it's about half what I think of as psychedelic rock (kind of heavy-- "Mogollar":/music/Mogollar, "Apryl Fool":/music/Apryl+Fool), and about half what my mega-music-nerd friend (he owns a record store) recently referred to as "Ooh, wacky foreign pop music! That's just some guys from Cambodia who listened to a Beatles album." He has a point-- it's hard to define psychedelia, and it's also easy to get into taking shallow delight in "funny" foreign singing. ("Cambodian Rocks":/music/Cambodian+Rocks is still a really good time, despite being mostly just a "groovy" pop band. They basically play variations on The Munsters theme song. That takes a long time to get old for me.) This same friend suggested looking into psych in Franco-era Spain, which was less influenced by American and British pop music. The Spanish label Toytown apparently put out a couple of international compilations (Mr Toytown Presents), and the first volume is supposed to be pretty good.

  2. Bawston Sean says If you haven't read "Turn On Your Mind":http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0634055488/103-3701345-2267830?v=glance&n=283155 by Jim Deragotis, it doesn an incredible job of defining what is and is not psychedelic. His theories on prog-rock are pretty entertaining as well.
