Against the Night

I got this album last year. It came out in 1999 on Springman Records. I only bought it for one song, "Dance While the Sky Crashes Down". The whole album is really good. I have to say that I was very impressed with this guy and I'm not sure why I never heard of him before. Jason Webley is a one man act that plays guitar and accordian when he's roaming the earth busking for money and playing concerts and whot not. He's got a pretty strong following from what I can tell. He's got a fan site at http://jasonwebley.tribe.net/. His music sounds like gypsy bar music from some indy 90's movie about Romania in the 60's. His voice varies from straight up Tom Waits growls to smooth vodka stained serenades. I think overall he sounds like a cross between Tom Waits and Shel Silverstein. He has strange habits from what I've read online. Read the "wikipedia entry":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_Webley for lots of weird and interesting tidbits. He's got a "European tour":http://www.jasonwebley.com/ going on right now. I'm really interested in knowing more about this guy. I think I will pick up some more cd's from him. I ordered the album from his site and I got all sorts o' goodies when I got the CD. I got a sweet 4"X5" sticker with his little skeleton guy on it, a red balloon with his guy on it, a flier for something from Russia showing a review of him with several concert dates in Russia, and a little note saying thanks. I love it when I get stuff like that. He's a lot of fun. His music when it's energized has this kind of drunken stomp to it. Kind of like gypsy pirate music. Love this album. Check it out if you can. Here's some links:http://www.jasonwebley.com/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_Webleyhttp://www.habitsofwaste.wwu.edu/issues/6/iss6art4a.shtmlhttp://www.springmanrecords.com/springman/aspx/band_info.aspx?ArtistID=11http://jasonwebley.tribe.net/"All Music Guide review":http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:gxfuxq8ald6eHere's the song "Dance While the Sky Crashes Down". It got me to buy the album. It's not like his Waits sounding songs but it is a nice tango with very clever lyrics.

  1. Kate says Gypsy Pirate Music? Awesome. My boyfriend sent me a mix with a Beirut song that is total wonderful gypsy pirate style, so Jason Webley sounds right up my (dark) alley. I bookmarked your post for perusal later. Thanks again!

  2. fistula spume says No problem Kate. The other song I like on the album is called "Back to the Garden" and it's about how vegetables are going to elevate us to another plane and we all gotta pitch in. It's a little weird but in a good way. Music from Beirut you say?

  3. fistula spume says Ah the band Beirut. Oops. I'll have to check that out when I get home. I like DeVotchKa and Gogol Bordello. Did you see "Everything is Illuminated"?

  4. Kate says Yeah, I wasn't expecting to like that movie, but I ended up really into it. Eugene Hutz was so good, I want him to be given more acting parts.
