Small Vessel

Posted over 1 year ago

SJ Esau's album Small Vessel was released fairly recently on Anticon records. I had read a review somewhere else and thought I would give it a shot. Had I known before it was on Anticon I would've probably have thought this was going to be some kind of electronic hip hop experiment. It is definitely experimental and electronic but it's more folky than most Anticon releases. SJ Esau is Sam Wisternoff. Apparently he started emceeing when he was 10 in the late 80's Bristol scene. He came in second place in a DMC emceeing championship. He retired rap at age 12. He's made a lot of music since then with various other bands and projects. The music is on Small Vessel is chaotic but warm. It sounds like he does a lot of circuit bending. On his site it says he uses a sound box made by Bug Brand. That's a really great site too if you want to check out a lot of great circuit bent and home grown synth mod pr0n. This album at times is very melodic and kind of meloncholic and other times it's upbeat and a bit friendly. Besides music manipulation he's got a really great grasp on words. Some of his lyrics turn in unexpected ways. You can check out lyrics, free tracks, and other goods on his site. He's a pretty interesting artist. The album has a nice flow with a lot of interstitial bits. The track that I liked the most is "Bastard Eyes". Check him out. He's a pretty talented individual.
