WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

You've Been Spiked

Posted about 1 year ago

I'm not really sure why I waited so long to get this album. Part of it was (lamely) that the album cover looked really cool but I was worried that the album would suck. I've bought albums before cause I thought the cover was cool but then I got burned. Shame on me. This album is gold. It came out in 2004 on ESL Records. Chris Joss puts the ky in funky. The album is an awesome mix of funk, blaxploitation, bollywood, disco, lounge, italian film music, and whatever else kind of kitchy sound you can think of. Pretty much like a lot of ESL albums but presented in a slightly different way. It's got extra funk. The album is a little bit ghetto and a little bit European. I loved it. It's fun in the car and on my kitchen dancefloor (or my dishwashing workstation). Check it out.

And shame on you, we should judge albums by their covers :)

I know Anna.  I really should be more judgemental when it comes to picking albums out.

qballvolpe it's a pretty much one of my favorite styles of music.  :)There really should just be one word for it.  Like elexotica or something catchier.

this is amazing, im thinking beach blanket bingo 08, or a target commercial...not sure which is more fitting.

Beach blanket for sure.  Definitely a Target commercial.  They've taken the reigns from Gap and Old Navy for cool song commercials.  JC Penney is good for a song too every once in a while.

nicki I think of that every time I see the album title.  That's a pretty sweet video.

indipixie it's a style of films from the 70's.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blaxploitation  They had really great funky soundtracks that had a certain kind of style to them.

    WTC - most definitely.

Clairvo - I didn't know that.  It makes sense though.

Spike - There's a lot of Spike going on here. :)

It's my dream job Rawk.  I want to work at one of those places that pick music for movies, tv, and commercials.  They get all the good stuff first.

I could not agree with you more, only thing better would be able to use my art skills on a daily basis......that I would give a nut for

Oh yeah! (knocks head)  That definitely tops the music job too.  And if I could do art anywhere on the world and never have to worry about food, money, or a place to sleep that would probably the sweetest occupation.

You should also look into Chris Joss' earlier efforts:

    Dr. Rhythm

    The Man With A Suitcase

The latter is a 'soundtrack' to a fictional TV show. In fact, the title track was used in the trailer for "Ocean's 13".

His new album "Teraphonic Overdubs" was released a few months ago on ESL Music.

"Chris Joss puts the ky in funky.", as in KY jelly? That would be appropo for the "Shella V" track which is definitely '70s porn music! "A Part Of That Show" is a hella awesome roller skate jam too(or roller skate porno, hehehehehe).

Thanks for the recommendations Marco.  The Man With A Suitcase sounds interesting.  He sort of reminds me of Shawn Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra.

August people are always saying "putting the 'fun' in funky".  I went the other direction.  :)

He's a self-taught multi-instrumentalist. He also has a jukebox player on his Myspace profile that's worth checking out.

The 12" for "I Want Freedom" was just released as well.

Sam, i had to wonder which definition of "You've Been Spiked" this was about and must say it was none of the expected. i'd add Sesame Street and video game pause music to the "awesome mix" list. plus, he puts the ayssst in taysssty.
