The Way I Feel

Posted almost 4 years ago
Remy Shand - Take A Message 4:03I don't really like pop music in general. I don't really like much modern R&B either. I did however really enjoy Remy Shand's album The Way I Feel. It sounds sincere and has an element of authenticity to it. The kid has soul. A lot of it too. The album was released in 2001 in Canada. Stateside it was released by Motown. His dad is Scottish/English and his mom is Italian. For a mult-instrumentalist Canadian with that combo of parents I think he does a pretty great job of making R&B music. I get a strong vibe of Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye from the album but also a little bit of Shuggie Otis. This album won a Juno for best R&B in Canada when it came out. He hasn't done anything else since which is kind of a shame. Anyway if you like this sort of thing I recommend it. He's pretty good.

  3. Lizziegreeneyes says I love this album... had it for years now & as soon as I saw your title Sam... I just had a "feeling" you were speaking about Mr. Shand. I also love that he's involved in all aspects of this album - writing, instruments, vocals, production... very cool stuff - hope he comes out with something in the future.

  4. Sturgell says Wow! This fella has some pipes! Reminds me a lot of Prince, but perhaps a little less sexed up.

  5. fistula spume says hey Lizzie! I loved that about him too. At like 24 years old to boot. Totally awesome album. Maybe he's been working for the last 6 years on another album. Can only hope. Sturgell I could see that. Or maybe a less boisterous and showy JT.

  6. Lizziegreeneyes says I think it's cuz he's old school in his R&B... I love *GOOD* R&B & too often than not these days, R&B isn't what it was. He shows such respect for those who came before & givin it his newer spin... just a solid on the whole... THANKS for bringing him to the MoggerASSES (MASSES) ;)

  8. Augusts1 says Good call Sturg on the Prince influence. It really comes through on that 3rd song. I'm picking up a little Barry White, Isaac Hayes & Earth Wind & Fire too on the first two songs. Good stuff.

  9. fistula spume says Lizzie I think that's why I like it. There's a lot of new R&B that gets touted as being straight up classic but doesn't really deliver. I think this album got it right. It sounds pretty fresh while sticking to the roots. Lady Miss Ian - Me too! August he's got it all going on. Maybe that's why there's not a second album. He used up all his influences!

  10. Cody B says I think he came a little too late, but I like the record...I think he's more along the lines of a Maxwell/D'Angelo/Badu, with a real nice use of 70's musical tricks (cheap drum machine,keys)..smooth like apple butter. There was another cat who faded into obscurity called Pete Bellasco (though Remy's record is much better) who came out around then as well. Sad to say, being white and from Canada did not help Mr.Shand. I think both of these cats could only get played on Smooth Jazz-type stations as ,for the moment, major labels had abandoned retro-soul because it didn't fit into the emerging R&B/Hip-hop formula. 11. fistula spume says I think this Pete Balasco is leaning more on the smooth jazz tip with this song. Pretty groovy track though! I love the intro. Well they gave Remy all the chances they could. I remember I saw a video of one of his songs on BET at the time. I think the GLC crew sum up how I feel about new pop and R&B/Hip-hop. ~Ji0OJ9eXXxH.mp3~

  12. Cody B says Right Sam, Remy got a little push and there was some buzz and the BET. Too grown up I guess for the kids, and it is all about the kids. I agree that Remy's record is better than Pete's (and pete was on verve so there's no doubt he was aiming at smoove jazz). Both though, I think were trying to connect the soul of the past to something new, and both bombed..I was drawn to the Honeydrippers sample on the Belasco tune, too. GLC is hilarious.

  13. ardyjormkiv says soft and airy, yet definitely funky. and i agree that it is better than most poppy r&b out there, which wears itself thin.
