Sweet Robots Against The Machine

Towa Tei - The End Of A Love Affair 2:50I've had a lot to say about Towa Tei since I've been on Mog. You can tell "HERE":http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=towa+tei+site%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fmog.com%2Ffistula_spume. He's one of my favorite artists. In 1999 he released an album titled Sweet Robots Against The Machine. The album I'm posting is actually the 2002 rerelease which for some reason has completely different tracks and album cover. In fact it's a completely different album. Go figure. This album is chock full of some high science techno. The styles range from garage, house, glitch, to plain ol' techno. It's a really fun listen. Defenitely made for robots. It feels like a natural progression of his craft after the Last Century Modern album. There's one track called "Free" which I feel doesn't go with the album as it's more of a club radio track. It's not so bad though. At the end there's a 17 minute long track that features Gamelan music that seems to have been recorded in a jungle. That doesn't fit the album either but it's a very hypnotic experience to listen to it all the way through. The first Sweet Robots Against The Machine is his only album I'm missing aside from a new album that was released recently and a soundtrack he did for the movie Dainipponjin. Last year he released a reissue of Future Listening! with a bonus remix disc. I can't say enough of how much I like this guy. I'm always impressed with every listen. Check him out already!Audio SexFree

  4. fistula spume says I had no idea I've mentioned him so much until I did the search. Yup I'm a Towa Tei guy. He's a micro Japanese machine! If he had a fan club I'd join it. One day I'll be up to 3 pages o' posts. There's still a zillion remixes he did that I don't have. Japanese music is so hard to find.

  5. tangerman says Thanks for sharing! I wonder if Hideki Matsutake from LOGIC SYSTEM are credited as a programmer on this TOWA TEI album? I know that he was involved in one or more albums by T.T. Nice post with good songs! :-)

  6. fistula spume says From what I can tell he was for the first two albums but I'm not sure about the others. He's collaborated with a lot of different people over the years. Seems like he's worked with Uwe Schmidt a lot. I love me some Towa. Glad you liked the post tangerman!

  8. fistula spume says Love YMO! I think I have most of their stuff. I don't think that I've actually heard any Logic System. I saw a pretty huge discography and some really cool lookin album covers when I checked earlier. Need to bone up on Hideki Matsutake. Love Japanese electro too! Thanks for the tip.

  11. fistula spume says It was Nicey Cody! I think my favorite song from this album is Hawaiian Table Chapa which I posted on my Pedal Steel Guitar post. http://mog.com/fistula_spume/blog_post/86281. I don't know why I like him so much. His music is just so smart and dense and arty and wacky and playful and blah blah blah. There's this progression of technology that you can hear from album to album. He's always on top with the newest beats and styles and still puts his spin on it. I put him up there as one of the best in the techno field. He can also churn out some pretty trippy tunes. I tell my wife that he's in my group of super smart dudes that have little bodies but big heads. Look forward to the posts tangerman!

  12. Oatmeal says You know I like Towa already, never heard these. I think the "End of a Love Affair" was my fave. Tikus was good too. He always incorporates whatever electronic style of production is vogue into his overall bossa/pop sensibilities. This is definitely micro-housey with all the edits and techno dub effects, but still a catchy Japanese creation like earlier stuff. It is admirable.

  13. fistula spume says I like "End of a Love Affair" quite a bit too. He does always incorporate the latest to his sound. Some have argued that he's still using the same sample set from the material he used to make his first album but I think he's expanded far more than when he was in Deee-Lite or that first album. It's totally micro-housey but that fits with what was going on at that time with techno. The album after this is like a combination of even more glitch but it's a poppier album. Want his new stuff!
