WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Grrrls Rule!!!

Posted about 1 year ago
I've been listening to a ton of Grrrl rock this week. I got some Muffs, Cub, Bratmobile, and a bunch of others. I cannot get this Slits song out of my head. It's so awesome. I love Ari Up's voice. It gives me shivers. I've been looking up some albums I don't have. I didn't realize that Kill Rock Stars had rereleased so many classic Grrrl ablums. I think I'm going to download Liliput, Delta 5, and Essential Logic on emusic tomorrow. Listening to all of this stuff is getting me pretty worked up and angry. In a good way though. I forgot how much I like Babes in Toyland and L7. Keep it up wimmin!

  2. garrick says this is wicked cool! I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the grrl vox. Esp w/loud guitars in the bg. Anyone remember a movie called "Times Square" - circa 1981? The last Robt. Stigwood movie. Two runaway girls hanging in NYC with Tim Curry way before MTV and Disney were fixtures in Times Square. And yes, they form a punk band. Great film! Did I digress?

  3. fistula spume says They're good stuff schnitzengruben. Garrick I haven't seen it but it sounds really sweet though. Putting it on my queue. It's funny you should mention Tim Curry cause I was thinking that there was something of his voice in Ari Up's delivery of this song. The soundtrack to the movie looks top notch too.

  11. fistula spume says I know huh. I've grrrled myself out but was really fun. I wish I still had Bikini Kill's first album. Gonna try to track that one down. There were so many great angry fem rock in the 90's. Now I feel like hearing some God Is My Co-Pilot. Boys drool and girls rule.

  12. uncle creepy says Wow, that brings back memories. I met the Slits backstage at The Stone in 1981. I mentioned liking certain bands that the Slit I was talking to didn't, such as The Damned and The Stranglers. Dumb of me.. should have mentioned the Jamaican dub and early ska records I liked instead. I saw Delta 5 around the same time at the Savoy Tivoli in North Beach. Other local SF all-grrrl bands playing around town then that I liked included VS. and The Urge. But the first all-grrrl band I saw (girl band with attitude) was in 1974, at The Garden of Earthly Delights. Can't remember their name, just that one of them derided me from the stage, something like, "Okay, Fred Astaire is here tonight." I was dancin' all over the place, party of 1, a real fool.

  13. fistula spume says Wow sweet stories uncle creepy. I've been known to make an ass of myself from time to time. No worries though. I picked up the Delta 5 collection recently and can't wait to hear it. How cool that you met a Slit. Their bio said they got their break opening for the Clash. Seems hard to imagine she would be so turned off. Thanks for the comment.
