Tall Dwarfs

Posted almost 4 years ago
I absolutely love New Zealand's Tall Dwarfs. They were formed in 1981 by Chris Knox and Alec Bathgate. One of my favorite bands. They have a really great fuzzy lo-fi sound. The songs are pretty diverse from track to track. The lyrics are pretty sweet too. I got their album Weeville around 1993. It was released in 1990 on Flying Nun Records. What a top notch album. I got a few more albums by them and was thoroughly impressed with those as well. Alas my other albums were stolen. Pick an album up if you ever see one as they're not easy to come by. I wanted to post one of my fave songs from this album. If you got a mix tape from me in the 90's there's a really good chance you got this song on it. Love it.

  1. poebegone says ooh i am folkie like that. this is the first i've heard of these guys, i'd love to hear more! wait, stolen? like borrowed and never returned stolen, or broke into your home and how cool is this burglar's musical taste stolen? either way, how awful.

  2. fistula spume says One album was a collection of 3 EP's that I had on cassette and it was stolen out of my car and the other was a CD collection of all their really old EP's that was stolen out of my house along with all of my other notable worldy possesions. I lived near a lot of despicable people and party people at the time so I have no clue who took what. This was around '97. I've slowly been trying to get albums here and there that I had. I got the Tall Dwarfs 3EP's album yesterday and can't wait to listen again. I can't get tired of them. My Weeville copy is pretty loved on. I had about 30 cd's that didn't get stolen cause they weren't in the house. Those are for the most part my most cherished.

  7. fistula spume says How funny. I sent him this album last year for a Flying Nun comp. I've decided I'm going back and getting their catalog again. Yesterday I ordered a ton of Sebadoh I used to have for cheap on Amazon. If only Tall Dwarfs were so cheap.

  9. levek says "Nothing's Going to Happen - rej edit" I downloaded this from the Internet (album was not mentioned) and I edited it myself so it would fit in a compilation; I thought the song ending was too 'chaotic' for what I was aiming for.

  10. goodmusiconly says Lots of great artists on the Flying Nun label ... my latest favourite find being The Shocking Pinks. Liking the track you posted, I'll have to look into them further. Thanks Fisty!

  11. fistula spume says No problem Bartleby glad to help out. I gotcha Levek. Some of their stuff veers on the chaotic noisy side. GMO what I've heard I've really enjoyed. I need more from that label. It's pretty good stuff. I really enjoyed the Look Blue Go Purple album I got last year.

  13. Augusts1 says Can you say Neutral Milk Hotel? I knew you could. Tall Dwarfs obviously influenced NMH quite a bit(which is a great comparison if you didn't figure it out)! Really digging the 2nd song that Levek posted as well.

  14. poebegone says Sam, i feel for ya. had my own run-ins with despicable people and party people, and it's only late last year that i decided to re-build, if that's even still possible. you're right that Tall Dwarfs never seems to get tiring to listen to. oh, and i'm with you and Erin on liking a lot from Flying Nun. @ Levek - remixing a song to fit it in my compilation - i have yet to do that and must say the idea thrills me endlessly.

  15. fistula spume says You know I used to do that all the time when I had a tape recorder. The only thing I miss about tapes is the start and stop function of making a tape. Too hard to splice stuff together on the fly.
