"The Mexican" was a song by British rock group Babe Ruth. It was released in 1972. I freakin' love it. Ever since I read about it in a DJ book I had to find it. I did find it and I listen to it all the time. It's got a killer beat with some awesome breaks and some seriously rockin' guitar riffs. It's one of those songs that was in early sets by DJ's like Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash. It's been sampled a lot. It was also used by early disco pioneers to rock some serious loft orgies in the early 70's. I love it and hope you like it too. Check out their picture. How can these people not rock?!

I remember seeing their album covers in record shops throughout the Eighties, but was never inclined to buy any of them because they looked too much like Yes covers. This, however, does not have much in common with Yes....

I've only heard tracks off of their first album. From what I read they didn't have this vocalist for long. She's got some serious rock pipes. The track "Wells Fargo" is also awesome. They do look like Yes. Covers I mean. Too funny.

Saw them live in '74. Yes, Ivy, nothing like Yes. They were a powerhouse rock band. One of the highlights of the day long "Blue Oyster Cult Festival" that also featured BOC, Billy Cobham, Isis, and closed up with non other than The New York Dolls. Talk about a day of great music!! Great post Sam! I've got some pictures, let me see if I can swap em to the digital world...

Not heard of this group. I'd like to hear a song or two that's sampled this song. Liking the song.

Me likey. The vocals have a sort of Sweet or Slade feel to it, but a little like Spirit in the guitar playing. I wonder what the compression was they used on the vocals on some of these bands in the 70's, even early Queen sounds like this. Ah, I just really like stuff like this.

I know. To think that festival actually occured in Dayton, Ohio blows my mind nowdays. After all the other diversity, the Dolls were the last act, late to the stage at about midnight (after an hour and a half wait). By the time their set began, there were only about 200 peeps left in the 5,000 seat hockey arena. Everybody was crammed around the stage, and yours truly was front row center. It was like a private performance! Johannsen was sharin' champagne with anyone in reach. Thunders and Sylvain were glitterin' and thrashing to perfection...the Dolls at their brief peak. It is certainly one fine cyrstalline memory my good man!

August it seems like Prodigy and Chemical Brothers have used it but here's the list of who have sampled it: Afrika Bambaataa’s “Planet Rock”, Doug E Fresh’s “Africa (Goin Back Home)”, Funky 4+1’s “Feel it (the Mexican)”, Jungle Brothers’s “On the Run”, Maestro Fresh Wes’s “The Mic's My Piece”, Organized Konfusion’s “Prisoners of War”, R Kelly’s “Dancing with a Rich Man”, and Sugar Ray’s “Fly”.

Contra it does have a bit of Slade and Spirit to it. A lot of the tracks have this kind of Spanish/western feel to it. Really rockin though. Glad you liked it.

Ivylander I know huh.

I likey what I'm hearing. Never heard of them before and am most definitely and nostalgically jealous of Scot who got to see that incredible line-up.

Nice post and thank you for the introduction, Fistula.
