Deconstruction: The Celluloid Years

I'm a giant fan of Bill Laswell. I first heard his bass on John Zorn's excellent Naked City. I loved that album. I memorized everyone who played on that album. I started to notice Bill more and more on albums I was buying. The guy is just amazing. I think though if I wanted to hear everything he has put out I would need to take out a loan from a bank to get it all. From my meager collection I do have this compilation of his tunes from his work at Celluloid. It's a two cd compilation of his work titled _Deconstruction: The Celluloid Recordings_. It features songs he either plays some instrument on (mostly bass), has produced, or involved with in some way. Great stuff ranging from hip-hop, African music, jazz, post punk, to just all sorts thrown in the creative blender that is his brain and reconstituted into a song. It's hard to pick favorites as I really like the whole album. I'm posting the tracks that are sort of fitting my headspace as of late. Artists include Material, Massacre, Manu Dibango, Peter Brotzmann, Jalal Nuriddin, The Last Poets, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Ginger Baker, Mandingo, Fab Five Freddy, Sahngo, Last Exit, and Toure Kunda. Those groups and artists and a whole slew of other kick ass people.

    fistula spume says Oh now comments show up. Hey Cody. 10 years ago I was in a Kansas City record store and I found a small stack of hip-hop/electro 12"'s that he had produced. I listened to them though and they were just awful. It wasn't cool at all. Now I kind of wished I had picked them up even though they were so bad. I guess there was a reason why no one else grabbed them. He has produced some stinkers but with his kind of output there's bound to be some duds.

    contrabandwidth says Yeah, that inconsistency would plague most of the G.P's catalog. The first self titled album is the only thing I've heard that I like. Ditto with Praxis, after transmutations...meh. There are some grea performances by all those Knitting Factory regulars on John Zorn's Great Jewish Composer's: Burt Bacharach. It's great. The Masada albums are great too.

    fistula spume says No problem dimitra. Glad you enjoyed the post. Contra I got really excited about a Material cassette I found once and it was oh so bad. Can't win them all. Really love the Masada stuff too. I heard bout the Bacharach album but haven't gotten it yet. I'll check it out.

    spaceling says Did you know that Bill Laswell was one of the composers of "Lizard Point" that appeared on Brian Eno's Ambient 4: On Land album? Neither did I but your post got me searching my collection for all of the tracks with his name buried in the metadata. I'm especially fond of Laswell's work on the FAX label with Pete Namlook (Psychonavigation, et al), Tetsu Inoue (Cymatic Scan) and Haruomi Hosono (Interpieces Organization). Laswell, like Pete Namlook and Brian Eno, is one of those serial collaborators that has just consistently pushed and promoted ambient forms in electronic music. It's interesting, and surprising, to hear the work that he's done that isn't ambient.

    ciphermedia says Hey Sam, I'm used to be really down on Bill Laswell as well. Have got quite a few bits of vinyl, but in recent years have lost touch with what he;s been doing, and only have one digital album (Radioaxiom-A Dub Transmisson with Jah Wobble - which I haven't really played a lot - not bad, but never really grabbed me). Nice tracks to hear again. BTW, I'm with you on the hip-hop stuff he did. I think that might have been the about the time I drifted away.

    fistula spume says spaceling I bought a Namlook collab for my wife's step-father's birthday around 2000. It was a hit and I got a copy. Can't remember what it was but it was awesome. You're totally right about him, Eno, and Namlook. They're geniuses. I was opened up to Laswell as a jazz artist first, then electronic, and in the last 4 years I've explored more of his africa/no wave/funk stuff. I didn't know he was the composer of "Lizard Point". Need to go revisit that. cipher I used to have a bunch of the Axiom compilations. I thought they were kind of hit or miss. I still think Bill is the shiz though.
