Color Strip

Posted about 4 years ago
Picked up Jimmy Edgar's 2006 album _Color Strip_. Jimmy is a Detroit native who had been experimenting with electronic music from a very young age and was DJing whorehouses at age 15. At age 22 he was signed to Warp records and released a couple of very satisfying electro/glitch/hip hop/experimental mini albums. _Color Strip_ delivers the goods. There's a really nice interview "on The Milk Factory":http://www.themilkfactory.co.uk/interviews/jedgariw.htm that was done when this album was released. The music is so completely Detroit. I had a lot of fun listening to this album. It's got that total in the city ghetto paranoid electro feel to it. My fave track "My Beats" sounds so much like a Cybotron track. It's really quite diverse though. The track "Telautraux" makes me think of the movie "Ghost in The Machine". It's a scary beatless number that at first comes off as annoying, then hypnotic, then the voices of a million crystallize in your head. Great stuff. I totally recommend this if you love or have a passing interest in Detroit techno. Jimmy has since moved from Detroit and is living in New York now. He has a separate website for his photography which is pretty nice. You can see that "HERE":http://www.jimmyedgarphotography.com/. You can also pick up a couple of free Breezeblock mixes and a chillout mix of his on his website "HERE":http://www.jimmyedgar.com/sound.htm. Below is the video to the track "LBLB Detroit". Enjoy.

  4. fistula spume says I know that was a strange tidbit. Whorehouses and stripclubs. He was DJing with some really big names in some pretty ghetto places at a young age. He said, "Probably should’ve been robbed a few more times and raped."

  5. Alex P Morrisson says you wrote 'and was DJing whorehouses at age 15' i read, 'was a DJ whorehouse at age 15' i think it's a new turn of phrase... 'yeahh he's just a dj whorehouse...'

  6. fistula spume says Too funny. You know it's always the seedier sexy part of posts that people gravitate to. Actually when I first read it I kept thinking it said "warehouses" and it wasn't until writing the post that it dawned on me they were saying "whorehouses". I think DJ Whorehouse would be a good moniker. I always wanted to go with DJ Likes People That Give Him Free Beer.

  7. Bartleby says My Beats is so Kraftwerky that it should be called Trans Europe Express via Detroit. The music marathon-man strikes again, thanks Fistula.

  9. Augusts1 says "I Wanna Be Your STD", ahahahahaha, that's gotta be the best song title I've heard in quite some time! And I really like the song too! I guess that title's a natural outcropping of working in a whorehouse, lol

They're also rockin the whole automobile, Motown, and concrete jungle thing. ;) August it really is a lovely statement isn't it. Tell the one you love that you wanna be their STD today!
