WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Marry Me

Posted over 2 years ago
Man what a beautiful album this is. So refreshing. Came out in July '07. St. Vincent is Annie Clark. She's worked with Glenn Branca's 100 Guitar Orchestra, she was the bassist and backing vocalist for Polyphonic Spree's _Fragile Army_, and she was in Sufjan Stevens's touring band. She's a multi-instrumentalist and provided many aspects of instrumentation on _Marry Me_. People are comparing her to Kate Bush, Feist, and Regina Spektor. The music is diverse with lush orchestrations. It's just a really fun album. It's happy and sad. It's weird. It's definitely got some strange lyrics. I like that though. I've given this a lot of listens over the week and I remember on the first play thinking, "Wow, this is pretty good." It is. Sometimes I grow tired of music like this pretty quickly. This album seems kind of special though. She also doesn't come across as overtly pretentious. A little bit of pretension never hurt anybody anyway. Buy 30 of copies and pass em out to your friends. It's good stuff.

  3. Bartleby says You've given me the perfect excuse to prolong my procrastination on MOG. I'm in love with Annie Clark but then wouldn't you marry her if you saw this Takeaway concert starring her.

  5. fistula spume says She is quite the looker Bartleby. Very striking. That's a cool video. Thanks for posting. It just dawned on me that my first encounter was Ookpik posting her doing "These Days". It must've been subliminal me seeking her out. I see you've posted a few as well. Annie is really great.

  11. fistula spume says no probs Reckon. Glad you like em. I would too Lady Miss Ian. In a different world that is. One in which I'm cooler than I am and I'm not married. She's crazy awesome.

  14. Augusts1 says That first song . . .wow, it's just quirky enough that it made me want to listen to the whole thing. Usually I'll just listen to a minute & skip to the next one but I haven't even listened to the others. She does sound like a mix of Feist, Regina Spektor & also some Tori Amos. The other songs are great too. Nice find(as always).

  15. Mike the Knife says She is the embodiment of so many things that I like. Smart, confessional singer-songwriter with a bit of a theatrical/cabaret vibe - and dark charm...

  18. cpetersonart3 says Last Summer she perfomed at the 7th street entry in Minneapolis and you can see songs from that show on schedule two,I love this album. The song I go for is My Lips Are Red, as an arist a woman who starts talking about drawing gets me every time." My face is drawn on with a #2 pencil"

  19. fistula spume says Anna - Is that all? Where do I send the drinks? :) cpetersonart3 - That ones good too. The whole album is really great. I really like "Landmines" too. She has some really clever lines. From what I was reading online a lot of people said that she had a bit of a weird stage presence. I'd love to see her perform.
