Particles

Posted over 2 years ago
I've really been enjoying Basil Kirchin's last album _Particles_. It was released this year. Basil passed away with cancer in 2005 at the age of 78. He had managed prior to his death to complete one more album. It's a fantastic and strange affair. I'm not sure how to describe it. The first track and the last track are the closest things to a normal jazz excursion and all of the tracks in between are like conversations between aliens that are also of mixed ethnicity and race. It's like plants talking to bicycles talking to Romulans. Each instrument takes on it's own flow and there is an interraction that is much like a conversation between instruments. I like it. I don't think it would be fun for all. There's a really great write up on this album at "Trunk Records":http://www.trunkrecords.com/turntable/particles.shtml. He also has a nice biography on "Allmusic Guide":http://wm03.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:g9foxqu5ldse

  3. Bartleby says Basil sounds most intriguing. I've never heard of him before but then again when was the last I was already familiar with the artists you talk about. The Dice IS Cast will appeal to many a people I know. Nice bass on E+Me. Deep and totally spaced out. Thanks for this introduction, Fistula.

  4. fistula spume says You're welcome Bartleby. Now that I've gotten this one and from what I've read about him I really want to check out his earlier work. Really just incredibly neat.

  5. scotfree says This is very expressive Sam. From your description, I think I expected more electronic or unconventional instruments - but I was not the least disappointed in the unconventional use of traditional orchestral fare. At times contemplative and the next phrase rather Mexican to be followed by bebop jazz - "E+Me" is a quite unusual flavor. Thanks for sharing this. You constantly post up selections I would have never sought out on my own, yet enjoy immensely. The plucking strings of "Dice Is Cast" forages territory that neither Bach nor Electric Light Orchestra would have dared. Groovy

  6. fistula spume says Glad you like it. The bulk of the album is pretty experimental but it seems to be all natural instruments. There is one track that sounds like they're cutting up and manipulating tape of a clarinet but I'm not sure. His earlier work seems to incorporate a wide variety of sounds and recording techniques. Glad you liked it scotfree. I'm an audio spelunker. I never know what I'm going to uncover.

  7. poebegone says what a gem. Bye Bye is one of those things that feels like everything's going smoothly as planned and then it hits you when you least expect it. i love it immensely. The Dice IS Cast is so... Four Tet (i laugh as i think that), which is meant to be a good thing. i dig the descriptions, too. (:

  8. fistula spume says Cool. I really enjoy Bye Bye. The melody or riff really gets stuck in my head. They reach this high point that I like in the music. Glad you liked it Poe!

  10. fistula spume says He's pretty cool. His older albums look really interesting too. A lot more sound experimentation and abstract composition.
