WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

The Avalanches

Posted over 2 years ago
I don't know about you but I can't take it anymore. Where the hell is the next Avalanches album? How long does a body have to wait? Well from what I can tell they've been working on it for some time. In a way I'm happy they're taking their time but at the same time I think I'm giving undo anticipation to the next album. They've been very secretive about their next album. From their site I know they've been putting on some shows over the years in Australia and releasing some seriously killer mixes here and there. Their forums are a hotbed of some really intimidating music junkies. I think that's only normal considering the level of obscure samples that are in an album like _Since I Left You_. Enough blathering though. I wanted to point out if you haven't noticed that they've changed their site. It's kind of crappier now visually. What I really like is that if you sign in there are some really cool downloads. They have the songs off of their first 7" from 1997 titled _Rock City_. Kind of interesting. The fun part are the mixes that they have on there. If I could impart anything from this post then it is this: Login and download _Gimix_. Quite possibly one of the most satisfying mixes I've heard evar. Don't listen to me though. Go hear for yourself.

  2. Augusts1 says Haha! I _*feel*_ your pain since I've been waiting for their next cd! I posted about them awhile ago, you can check it out "*here*":http://mog.com/Augusts1/blog_post/47185#comments. I got to see them spin live & they totally blew my mind with the sheer energy they put out djing. They were frickin' otherwordly & I danced my ass off. The only drawback was that they didn't get to spin too long, I think it was maybe 45 mins. & that FLEW by in no time! So glad I got to see them too since they've been so elusive ever since then. But boy, they packed a helluva lot of good tuneage into that time slot! They played everything from early '80s Michael Jackson to Classical to Hard Rock & everything in between. I'll go check their site out & pickup those free dls! Thanks Sam.

  3. scotfree says Ya know, Sam, I got their cd 'cause of the good press but it didn't really do anything for me. I tried but there was just no, uhh, emotional connection to what they were doing. Yet, as I sit here listening to "Rock City", I wonder if I was too hasty. I'll grab that download and check it.

  4. fistula spume says Scotfree the guys buy records by the semi truckload. They've got some secret to mixing live that is just not matched by anyone else. If not for the love of that first album it was the world of music knowledge in the samples they lifted. It's an unbelievable amount. They have greatly expanded my knowledge of music just through their choice of samples alone. August I am thoroughly jealous. Their mixes are just so mind blowing. If you go to their website you also gotta check out the Some People mix. I've been listening to it tonight while I'm drawing and it's just so crazy awesome. The level of density of the artists and the flawless way the 5 tracks per minute come together is just mind numbing and heelarious. I think that maybe there are tells in some of the newer mixes that are giving signals of what's to come. Just like Gimix was for Since I Left You. I'm seeing maybe more Caribbean in the mix.
