I'm still playing my album play, and now I'm in the G's. By some awkward twist of iTunes logic, my Greatest Hits albums dont do a secondary sort by artist — they simply mix em all up.
So I got to listen to Springsteen, Dylan, Aerosmith, Tom Petty, and all the other artists who contributed a Greatest Hits album to my collection at the same time.
So, in tribute to that, lets listen to a real mashup. There is no better epic band than Queen, after all, and albums are about the big story, and the mashup is about the variety...I hope you enjoy.

It's easy to get bored with your songlist, even if it is, like mine, made up of almost 5000 songs covering more than 13 solid days of running time.
Thats why I have 68 smart playlists and 18 regular playlists in my iTunes library. Most of them span at least a day's worth of music, which is 8 hours, really, because I'm mostly listening to my computer music at work. It's a rare thing these days to fire up the CD player at home.
Much less the turntable.
But, yeah, I have a turntable. It was a wedding gift from my first wife, the only thing other than my two kids that she ever really gave me of any worth. Not that my kids compare to a turntable, but, hey, at least they know what a record player is! In fact, I probably listen to more vinyl at home than I do CDs, simply because I cant convert the records to mp3, so those are albums and songs that I dont get to listen to on a regular basis.
They include, obviously, some music from back in the day. Steve Miller, The Eagles, Led Zeppelin (although I have restored most of those via, um...you know), The Rolling Stones, Def Leppard, etc. Yikes. Maybe there is a reason I havent converted all those to mp3.
Anyway, iTunes gives us a great option to listen to album play, and thats what I'm doing now and, according to my calculations, this should last well into June. As you can see, I'm only to the B's.
But listening to music this way really lets you feel the spirit of these recordings in way that we dont have anymore. I'm sharing Catfish Blues, by Jimi Hendrix, because it's a classic album recording. Over 7 minutes long and segues perfectly to the next track. For the past 20 minutes now, I've been fully immersed in this record. On "shuffle play," by the time we recognize the song, amid the scuffle of other office noises, it's halfway over, and by the time I've found the key for to sing along, the song is over and I'm listening to something in a completely different genre.
Album play is nearly meditation. I'm finding that I like it a lot. And I dont have to turn the record over, either.

If you're wondering where all those hipsters on Def Poetry Jam came from, listen no further than the 1950s recordings of Jack Kerouac kickin it with or without musical accompaniment. In the case of San Francisco Blues, as posted here, it's nothing but Jack's inherently rhythmic voice...
"Praise be the embrace of soft sleep the valor of angels and valleys of Hell on Earth below... Praise be my fellow man for dwelling in milk... In the ocean theres a very sad turtle."
Modern musicians with a debt to Kerouac range from Beck to Jay-Z. This album is a great introduction to Kerouac even if you havent carried one of his books in your hipster hip pocket wandering breaking-down gum-spotted beer-soaked sidewalks in everywhere American cities.
