Looks like they really did successfully jack the Village Voice Pazz & Jop Poll, since they finished it the first week of the new year, while the Pazz has never come out before Valentine's Day to my knowledge.

Can you guess who topped the mountain of albums? I was so afraid it was gonna be Dylan or freakin' Clipse (sorry folks, I dislike them more every time I hear 'em). The fun part is looking at the individual ballots, I think. Mine is listed under Fastnbulbous. Not sure why they didn't put it under my name. I have one, and I gave it to them. Ah well, a little mystery won't hurt.

"Welcome to the first annual Idolator Jackin' Pop Critics Poll, a survey of critics and writers from around the world. We've tallied the 497 ballots, edited the essays, and flexed our MS Paint skills--and now, we're ready for you to comb through the results. "

1300 albums were listed. I think the top part of the list would have been a little more interesting if critics had to submit 20 or 50 albums rather than 10. Some of my top 20, like Milanese, didn't even get mentioned once.

The highest ranked albums that I never got around to hearing were:

61. Todd Snider - The Devil You Know (140 points in 13 votes)
85. Rosanne Cash - Black Cadillac (94 points in 9 votes)
98. Lindsey Buckingham - Under the Skin (86 points in 9 votes)
104. Damone - Out Here All Night (79 points in 7 votes)
108. Shearwater - Palo Santo (76 points in 7 votes)

My complete essay and lists.

TV on the Radio might be the most universally acclaimed album of the year. Pretty fascinating...

Shearwater put out one of my favorite albums of the year with Palo Santo. It's a bit of a grower, but it also keeps offering little rewards. Lead singer/songwriter Jonathan Meiburg's voice is incredibly affecting ... after probably 50 or so listens, I still get chills down my spine every time I put on the song "Hail Mary" from the album. An interesting bit of trivia: Meiburg is a biogeologist who studies birds in his spare time -- he travels to places like the Faukland and Galapagos islands between tours to work on field projects. I mention this because Palo Santo oozes an isolation-in-nature kind of rich sparseness that is really unique and timeless (I think). Anyway, I guess this fucking dissertation was just to say, "You should check the album out. It's real good."

Karloff says:

yeah i agree that return to cookie mountain is a great album and all, but did you ever realise that the drums on "a method" are slightly out of time? i noticed after having listened to it a few times, and i cant listen to it ever since.
