MOJO's End of Year Lists
Since there seem to be a lot of MOJO readers here, I thought I would post this separately. If you're thinking of complaining about or dismissing the whole list in the comments, don't. At least until you read this first -- How to use end of year lists, heh. That includes the lists from Uncut, Q top 100, NME, and the MOJO top 50. In the comment of this post you'll also find some of the MOJO genre lists. It's interesting in that I thought Uncut's Americanaphilia (love of all American folk,, country, bluegrass, roots and hybrids thereof) was a distinctly unique trend among UK publications. But it's spread to MOJO, given the high ratings of Dylan, Springsteen, Cash, Vetiver, Midlake, Newsom, Espers, etc.The ones I haven't heard but intend to are Archie Bronson Outfit, Amy Winehouse, James Hunter, De Rosa, Bert Jansch, Kelley Stoltz, Fionn Regan, Madeleine Peyroux, Simple Kid and Amp Fiddler. It's really hard to imagine geezers like Lindsey Buckingham, Elton John, David Gilmour, Jerry Lee Lewis and The Who having any relevant to say, and the thought of slogging through their stuff sounds like an absolute chore. But being the obsessive that I am, I'll inevitably sample them. Don't think I'm anti-geezer. I admired current albums by Ali Farka Touré, Tony Allen, Tom Waits, Scott Walker, undisputed geezers all (except for Toure who is sadly no longer living). Lemmy, Adrian Belew, Tom Verlaine, Morrissey and Jarvis Cocker are inching ever so closer to geezerdom. Coming next is probably Spin or some of the web sites. The list I found the most useful last year was from Stylus. Lately I've been trolling through their recommendations and enjoying Benoît Pioulard, Horse Feathers, Britta Persson, My My, Mountains, Cortney Tidwell, Marti Larsen, Under Byen and Annuals. I can't imagine why anyone outside of publishing would finalize their year-end list when there's a whole month to catch up on all these hidden treasures. Yar.
