Most Anticipated Fall 2008 Albums

Posted 10 months ago

It would be cool if MOG had a poll feature. Is one in the works? Here's one I did on ILM.

We're suffering from new release doldrums this summer big time. There's always new things to be found with some digging, but the big releases don't come out until Fall. Which of these albums are you looking forward to the most? What would you buy without having previewed it? For the sake of diversity, I included some albums that I personally would not be interested in, so there's some artists that aren't obviously on an upward creative arc. There's plenty albums by less established artists that will certainly be more promising than the new Kaiser Chiefs, but the list would be far too long. If your favorite is missing, go ahead and mention it, without whining pretty please.

Does anyone avoid listening to a leak just to enjoy the pleasure of anticipation of release day for old time's sake? I try to now and then. It might be more fun if those who have heard promos or leaks avoid talking about them, just as people who discuss movies try to have the courtesy not to blurt out spoilers. We could venture guesses as to what an album might be like not having heard anything yet.

I consider August summer still, and people are more likely to have already heard leaks of Lindstrøm, Don Caballero, Max Richter, Stereolab, Brian Eno/David Byrne, The Stills and Bloc Party. I also did not list albums that have no release date announced yet: Avalanches, Basement Jaxx, Big Boi, Gang Of Four, Herbert, Junior Boys, Massive Attack, Mastodon, Metric, Muse, Rancid, Stellastarr*, The Streets, Tortoise, U2, Patrick Wolf, Wolfmother, The Wrens, Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Sorry. Out of the ones you mention, I think Calexico would be my most anticipated one. Followed by Kaiser Chiefs and Grace Jones.

I wonder whether Massive Attack has another good record in them. I lost interest after Mezzanine, but maybe they'll surprise me.

To my top pick from your list, Serena-Maneesh (plus Dungen, TVOTR, and Calexico), I'd add The New Year's new record and (if it counts) the collection of 7" singles that Jay Reatard has been putting out for Matador this year.
