WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

A Night at Tipitina's

Posted over 2 years ago
Sometime in October 2001, i think (the photos are in a file i must have created around December 2002 on the computer) - A Night at Tipitina's, New Orleans.*Cowboy Mouth* opened, and then *Bill*, *Fred* and *Hoakie* regrouped into *Dash Rip Rock* and proceeded to show why their brand of eclectic cowpunk thoroughly kicked ass.

This is actually a composite of three separate shots; i was shooting 800 speed film with no flash - "Available darkness" as we used to call it in the film days.

Big Daddy Love Whiskey - *Bill Davis* on the rockabilly Telecaster from Hell.

*Fred leBlanc* tears it up. Bassist Ned "Hoakie" Hickel bows in awe at the thunder of Fred's drums...

The magnificence that is *Ned "Hoakie" Hickel* on bass. In Dash's trio setup, Hoak's bass filled as much the part of second/rhythm guitar as it did the more traditional role of the bass.
It probably wouldn't impress you to mention that Bill regularly broke one or two strings per show. How about if i tell you that more than once i've seen Hoakie pop the big top string on his bass?
That t-shirt that says "I don't have a drinking problem: I drink, I get drunk, I fall down. No problem." might have been designed with Hoakie in mind. One night he did a spin or something in the middle of a Lynyrd Skynyrd (i think it was Gimme Three Steps) song, tripped over his own feet, and finished the song sitting on his butt, unable to stand up without help or putting down the bass. But he didn't miss a note.

Another composite shot - the whole stage, from the right-side balcony.
The sightlines at Tip's are pretty good - especially from the balcony that runs around all three sides of the house.
Never seen a bad show at Tip's.

  3. fairportfan says *Butch Hancock* (who i'll eventually get 'round to talking about) has a song entitled Firewater (Seeks Its Own Level).
ya got drunk last night swear ya saw the devil donca know firewater seeks its own level?
All you have to do is play that song and mention the name *Hoakie Hickel* and virtually anyone who knows Hoak starts wondering if Butch knew him...
