  2. Spike says Kris Kristofferson's lyrics for this song are probably his sincere opinions, in which case he refuses to befriend anyone who doesn't share his taste for Hank Williams, or at least anyone who has told him on their own initiative that they don't. He must be popular enough to limit his circle of friends using that criterion. I once befriended someone mostly because of his wide tastes in music. At one point he said he liked bluegrass, and I asked him if he liked Hank Williams. When he said no, suddenly a huge area of music was off-limits to our discourse. Later he said that he realized that he had confused Hank Williams with Hank Williams Jr., and that he had since heard Hank Williams records that he really liked. On some irrational solipsistic level, I find it mystifying that others don't have tastes in music identical to mine. Why can't they invent an esthetometer that will prove scientifically that my musical choices are the right ones?

  3. fairportfan says I think where Kris is comong from in this discussion is something similar to *Burt Reynolds*'s line: "Who's an asshole depends on exactly where you're standing when the word comes up." (not exact, from memory). *Webb Wilder* has a little number called If You Don't Think Elvis is Number One, You're Full of Number Two. But i do have to agree with Kris to some extent (which is why i posted the lyric); if you profess a wide musical taste but disdain the founders of a given genre, you're at least misrepresenting yourself, possily even to yourself...
