Good-Bye to my Friends and Followers (if i have any left...)

Posted over 1 year ago

This post will be up for a day or so, and then i'll be deleting my MOG membership.

Not sure if that deletes my past posts or not.

If there's anyone out there who still bothers to check when i post anything (since i haven't posted anything in months, and haven't made any comments in months {albeit fewer months than since my last post}, this is my swan song.

For quite a while, i had a lot of fun on MOG. But then, as MOG itself (that is, the app/organisation, not the community) changed, it seemed like i was drawn here to post less and less often, and i couldn't seem to work up any enthusiasm to post comments very often, either.

Actually, it's not quite accurate to say the community didn't change - i started seeing less and less of some of my favourite MOGgies, too.

So this is good-bye.

And thanks for all the fish.

BTW - plugging a few or my favourite comics: the pangolin-scaled cat looking cranky about finding himself in pajamas is Jeremy, from Dan Shive's wonderfully-odd webcomic, El Goonish Shive.

The "Good/Bad Conscience" is from Jenny Breeden's Atlanta-based webcomic The Devil's Panties.

And Sy'rinj, the wood-elf (below) is from Guilded Age, a webomic inspired by games like World of Warcraft. Below Sy'rinj is Valkyrie Yuuki, from the webcomic Sparkling Generation Valkyrie Yuuki (also by an Atlanta-area artist). Yuuki was a typical anime/manga horndog boy till he watched one too many mahou shouju anime...

And, last but not least - Ash and Emily. Ash was also a boy, till a pot-smoking angel messed up the files in the Heavenly Filing Office, and Ash became a girl (and Emily, her blue-haired friend, lost two years of her life and her acceptance to Harvard). But Ash and Emily are the only people on Earth who remember this... Misfile is by Chris Hazleton, and has Lots And Lots of archives to lose yourself in...

And the lady cheerfully proclaiming her complete lack of sanity (which is kind of disturbing, since she is one of three magically-created Golem Girls, any one of whom could destroy the Earth - and, very likely, the rest of the Solar System - in a moment of irritation...) in my new avatar is Jin, from Paul Taylor's Wapsi Square.

You really ought check out the strips if you're into comics at all.

All of these characters are, of course, copyright by their respective creators.

Whoa! I hadn't looked seriously at my profile or at MOG's interface in a while.

    No more Like/Dislike lists?

    No more MOG Mail?

I'm getting out at the right time, i guess...

You will be missed.  Enjoyed your presence here on MOG but totally understand where you're coming from.

Don't know if you have a Facebook account but a number of MOGGERS have deleted their accounts or still have them but rarely do anything here anymore, can be found in a group called MOG ORPHANS.  It's filled with life like the old MOG days of yesteryear.

Once again, it's a shame to see you go, but completely understandable.  Aloha from Hawaii...

The Mog mail feature taken away from us kept us from keeping in contact with each other was a bad move and then when the personality of our profiles was stripped away, the spirit of the website had died.  The community was left behind.

Before you sign off, take a quick peak at the bottom paragraph of a post from last year where we mentioned you along with a few others for making MOG a special place:

Hey Mike, I was going to Mog mail you but I guess that's a no-go, eh? I still have a Mog account but it becomes more and more pointless. I just don't want to miss the posts by people I like and respect who are still here. I think everyone who's responded to this post is in the Mog Orphans group on Facebook.

In my writing group the other night, I noticed my buddy Sean's copy of Liege and Leaf, which he got through me, and I got, directly or otherwise, I don't remember, through you. So what you've done here has put you into peoples' lives that matter and that you can't even be aware of.

Hope you and yours, including your vehicle, are doing well. If you're switching over to a blog, I'd love to know. If you're avoiding all this stuff for now, gimme a holler anyhow. My email's sumacrdp@yahoo.com . I hope your old posts don't go away; I have at least one on Fairport bookmarked.

    Cheers,

    Rob

That reminds me - i lost my copy of my Fairport history in a computer crash - i *think* it's still online, but i gotta look.

The problem is that al of the MOG notifications are clogging up one of my -email accounts, and i never seem to get around to them.

The car got fixed just fine.  Since we had gap coverage on our loan (pay off the note no matter what the value of the car is if it has to be totalled) the insurance company shelled out the $8000-plus to fix it; and didn't charge a deductible, because we'd been good for so long.

    Then i crashed the computer.

Lost fifty gig of music (which i am slowly recovering some of) and *almost* lost my comic collection - i have complete runs of a couple of newspaper strips going back to 1999.

I now have an external terabyte drive that has nothing but backups (and a shared file for our home network) on it.  Everything that's changed in the comics and music directories since the last full backup gets backed up every morning ... and a *full* backup of both of them runs every seven days.

And the entire system drive gets imaged on that external drive once a week, so i can rebuild the machine almost completely (all i'd lose is whatever programs i might have installed since the last image, and no data - i don't keep data on that drive anymore).

Also, we've moved from the two-bedroom apartment we were sharing with Kate's daughter and our son-in-law and the grandbabies (three and five now).

We now have a (relatively) huge house at a not-so-relatively higher rent - $950 vs $650.

OTOH, i will be receiving my second Social Security check this coming Wednesday.

    Life is Interesting.

Glad some of the shit's going well. You should definitely keep in touch with people, first because they're people, and second because some of us may have some of the music you lost. You are welcome to flip the order of those priorities, depending on the people and music involved.

I understand where you are coming from. I still hang out at MOG but post less frequently. Perhaps my voracious appetite for music in several genres has abated; I notice I am buying fewer CDs, making fewer gigs, and mostly listen to the local college radio. Good luck, vaya con Dios, come back when you wanna.
