Madonna's hoochie: Bad. Murderous dictator: Good. The Gospel according to Cardinal Medina

Posted over 3 years ago

I'm so glad that we have upright churchmen like Chile's Jorge, Cardinal Medina who know what's good and what's evil and want to tell us about it.

Lustful Madonna offends God, says clergyman

Pop star Madonna's antics are lustful, a stain on humanity and offensive to God, a retired Roman Catholic cardinal said Wednesday during a mass for the late Chilean military dictator Gen. Augusto Pinochet.

Madonna performed in Santiago on the Latin American leg of her Sticky and Sweet Tour to promote her album "Hard Candy."

"The atmosphere in our city is pretty agitated because this woman is visiting and with incredibly shameful behavior provokes a wild and lustful enthusiasm," Cardinal Jorge Medina told the congregation.

"Thoughts of lust, impure thoughts, impure acts, are an offense to God and a dirty stain on our heart," Medina said in his homily marking the second anniversary of Pinochet's death.

The conservative prelate is reviled by some Chileans for his close ties to Pinochet, who died in 2006 without facing trial for the fate of 3,000 people who died or disappeared during his 1973-1990 rule.

Madonna gets a bad review from Chilean cardinal

A prominent priest criticises Her Madgesty for provoking 'lustful, impure thoughts'. Oddly enough, he heaps praise on General Pinochet. Some might consider this to be a double standard

{Caption in The Guardian: Apparently, Madonna wasn't rightwing enough for Cardinal Jorge Medina Estevez.}

Madonna "provokes a crazy enthusiasm," a prominent Chilean priest said yesterday - and not in a good way.

Jorge Medina Estevez, a retired cardinal and apparent amateur pop critic, began his homily in lofty praise of General Augusto Pinochet, the late dictator responsible for more than 3,000 politically motivated killings and disappearances. He then shifted into a diatribe against sinful Madonna, who sings songs about boys, girls and sweets.

"This woman comes here," Medina said, "and in an incredibly shameless manner she provokes a crazy enthusiasm, an enthusiasm of lust, lustful thoughts, impure thoughts."

Medina is one of Chile's most prominent clergymen, and as cardinal protodeacon was the man who announced to the world the selection of Benedict XVI as pontiff. He is known for his conservative views, but less so for his album reviews.

As per official doctrine, Medina stepped down as a cardinal following his 80th birthday.

Madonna is in Santiago for two concerts at the Estadio Nacional. Devotees camped out for more than three days in order to secure good spots at the gig, which is expected to attract more than 60,000 crazy, lusty, impure and enthusiastic fans.

There is no word whether anyone camped out to hear Jorge Medina Estevez at mass, nor whether any fellow Pinochet nuts were batting eyelashes at the cleric.

Let's see. Doing things that cause people to think of sex and other things that are fun and don't kill people is Evil.

Conducting memorial services for a vicious military dictator who came to power in a CIA-backed coup and oversaw the death or "disappearance" of at least 3000 people is Good.

Okay. Gotcha.

This is not a defense of Pinochet.  I question the linkage you make, the leap from Madonna's "Sex Sells Anything (everything)" tour (career), to a relatively benign dictator (only when compared to others in his neighborhood & time) who did far more good for his country then some like to give him credit for.  He was ruthless, but relatively surgical in dealing with enemies of the state, real or perceived.

Meanwhile Madonna who would proudly boast of doing exactly what the shaman says she does....rolls on through the lowest common denominator raking in the cash.  In his context he is stating fact.

From whence do you draw your opinions on what the man actually said about Pinochet?  What, specificaly did he say?

I really wanted to avoid this....I must go to (wife's) co. Christmas Party now, so.....later....

Anyone who claims to be a man of God who has anything good to say about Pinochet is automatically disqualified to judg anyone's morality.

"Relatively surgical in dealing eith enemies of the state"?   Tell that to the relatives of the thousands of "disappeared", or the dissidents hunted down and killed out of the country by the secret police.

Tell it to Allende and his democratically-elected government.

Don't tell it to me, though, becaue i've heard it all before.  And it was, at best, a mistake on the part of the peole telling ot to me.

Whatever you think of Madonna (And my own first comment on her, manymany years ago, when a friend remarked "But she is kinda hot," was "I wouldn't fuck her with *your* dick."), she is *not* a threat to anything but good taste.

    Pinochet and his kind, though...

I cannot agree with this blanket statement....without knowing what was said.

But the fact remains..............leftists wanted to destroy Chile.

and the fact remains that wealth was distributed more evenly throughout the population of Chile under Pinochet then it is even now.  Since Pinochet roughly 1/4 of the people have fallen into poverty.

If you would check other sources (besides leftist publications) you could get a more balanced view.  Again,  this is only a defense of Pinochet in so far as you are attacking him for being a total monster.  He wasn't.

Life ain't neat & clean,  we (USA) learn from our mistakes.

But again.....you artfully turned the discussion from Madonna to Pinochet for your own reasons.  The connection says more about you than it does about recent history.

If Pinochet wasn't a monster, he tolerated and used monsters in his government.

"Leftists wanted to destroy Chile"?  Got any actual backing for that statement?

Like Democrats and environmentalists want to destroy America, according to Rush and Sean and Neal and Ann?

I swear, you're further to the right than my brother.

And i didn't turn any conversation from Madonna to Pinochet - you seemed to want to discuss Pinochet; i specifically made the point that the cardinal condemned Madonna in lurid language at the same memorial mass where he was praising Pinochet.

    That's all i said.

You chose to spin the conversation by accusing me of spinning.

.......and my in my first extended comment I asked what, specifically the shaman said "in praise of Pinochet".

.......and your posotion is that there is nothing good to say about the man.   I get that.

I think your view (in this instance) is jaundiced.  Though far from a saint Pinochet, on the whole, helped Chile more than he hurt it.  By a long shot. You reject that, I guess.  You're entitled to your opinion.

The facts are there to study.

*lurid language?  (the author lives in his adjectives.)

Did you, in fact, read the articles i quoted?

    "Lurid"?

"The atmosphere in our city is pretty agitated because this woman is visiting and with incredibly shameful behavior provokes a wild and lustful enthusiasm."
"Thoughts of lust, impure thoughts, impure acts, are an offense to God and a dirty stain on our heart," Medina said in his homily marking the second anniversary of Pinochet's death.

    and

"This woman comes here," Medina said, "and in an incredibly shameless manner she provokes a crazy enthusiasm, an enthusiasm of lust, lustful thoughts, impure thoughts."

    Fairly lurid, as in

    1. Causing shock or horror; gruesome.
    2. Marked by sensationalism: a lurid account of the crime

    i'd say.

And, as to praising Pinochet and saying what a grand guy he was - this was, after all, a memorial mass for the man. conducted by a priest who was one of his big supporters, and is

... reviled by some Chileans for his close ties to Pinochet, who died in 2006 without facing trial for the fate of 3,000 people who died or disappeared during his 1973-1990 rule,

    who

... began his homily in lofty praise of General Augusto Pinochet, the late dictator responsible for more than 3,000 politically motivated killings and disappearances. He then shifted into a diatribe against sinful Madonna, who sings songs about boys, girls and sweets.

From speaking to people who have been there, and people who come from there, i doubt you'd find many non-rich Chileans who would speak well of Pinochet; he was, aftyer all, dodging extradition and trial for both crimes against humanity and plain and simple (well, at his level, not so simple, but plain) looting of the treasury.

Are you gonna tell me what, exactly, he said, or not?  That's been my question all along, right?  Or are you just parrotting the oh so unbiased "guardian"?

You asset that the man is reviled by some Chileans but you fail to mention the (decidedly low) percentage of the population feels that way.

Conidering that it was a memorial mass for Pinochet by a priest who was a personal friend of his, i could probably write his homily for him; i'm sure said the same sorts of things you have about how Pincohet saved Chile from being destroyed by leftist conspracies, except more warmly, and he really wasn't all that bad and he didn't really oversee the murder or "disappearance" of thousands...

I mean, would you really have had to hear George Lincoln Rockwell's exact words to know how well he spoke of Adolph and how he pounded home the International Jewish Conpiracy doctrine?

I mean, it's only notorious left-wing organisations like Amnesty International, dedicated to the destruction of Western Civilisation, who claim to have documentd thousands of atrocities that can be laid directly to Pinochet's administration, if not the man himself.  (Hey - Pontius Pilate's hands were clean, too.)

Anyone who speaks well of Pinochet at all is complicit in hismurder of thousands.  I don't think he even managed to get the trains running on time.

Don't bother responding; i can listen to Rush r Ann if i really need to hear this stuff.
