This is (more or less) the content of a comment i made to a post by Spencer Owen; i'd been meaning to post it and hadn't got 'round to it till i read his. Though his post was about something entirely different - reviewing David Byrne's latest project, collaborating with Brian Eno - it remined me i had this little tidbit all lined up:
NY hosts 9 bicycle racks designed by David Byrne
Musician, artist and bicycling enthusiast David Byrne has designed nine unusual bike racks that have been installed around New York City.
The Department of Transportation says the artistic installations by the Talking Heads singer are meant to spark interest in bicycling.
Each rack reflects its location. A guitar-shaped rack named Hipster has been placed in Brooklyn's trendy Williamsburg neighborhood. A rack that looks like a dollar sign is in the Wall Street area.
Byrne was one of the founders of the music group Talking Heads in the 1970s. He's been publishing and exhibiting his artworks over the last decade.

Going to have to share this with my 'hipster' daughter who teaches in Wiliamsburg - but can't afford the rents there since its now a trendy place to live.
Yup.
Same thing's been happening in Atlanta since before i moved here in 1972 - the "hippies" and the punks and the New Agers and the arty gays move into areas where the rents are low and the neighbourhood starts getting a reputation as a "trendy" area, and the Yuppies move in...
And push up the rents to where the original interesting peple can't afford it and have to move out...
...and then the Yuppies wonder why the neighbourhood is getting so boring.
I can hear the New Yorkers now: "Yo! Check out that rack ovuh there! What's up, baby?"
He had that crazy installation recently no?
