MOG MOG

WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

And so i was listening to the public radio station, and they were running what i thought was PRI's The World, and it finished with a story about what they said was the national #1 song - I Kissed a Girl. (MOG is acting up; click here to hear the song.) {Since fixed; go to the embedded player at the bottom of the post.}

(I just tried to find that particular program online - it was The World, but the musical segment at the end of the program listed for 8 July 2008 in their archive is someting else entirely.)

Anyway, they interviewed a lot of (i assume) high-school/college age girls (and one guy) about what they thought about the song, and most of them were fairly thoughtful in talking about how it's more acceptable (hell, almost mandatory in some areas) for girls to go through at least an experimental bi-curious phase in their college years, and how the song made them feel...

And then they finished with a girl who said that, well, the lesbian theme might make her a little uneasy, but it's just a pop song and (she implied) nobody really listens to lyrics anyway and (then she actually said) it's got a good beat and it's easy to dance to...

I wondered if she gave it a 73.

Anyway, i like it.  In fact, i think i like the whole album.

There's some interesting thinking in there - Self-Inflicted, where she compares a boyfriend to a suicide's method of choice, for instance.

Her in-your-face attitude sort of reminds me of early Joan Jett.

Her web page is here - but be warned, it's going to blast you with I Kised a Girl when you click in; wither have your sound off or way down, of be ready to click fast on the stop button at the upper left.

"Ode to Brandon Teena"? Or, "Finally someone who knows what I really want!"

Huh?  I haven't yet listened to all the tracks on the album, but that's not a title i see.  What are you talking about?

Oddly, a couple of hours ago, Kate and i were talking about Brandon Teena.  Lately i've been discovering some new webcomcs, and, for some reason, several of them seem to have transgender themes, to greater or lesser extent, and a couple have mentioned Teena, particularly in connection with an annual national Transgender Day of Remembrance...

I like it also.  Maybe it will help slow the population explosion.

i haven't heard the song yet, but it certainly has been all the rage lately.  Perry is becoming very popular very fast right now.

I like her voice, and the music, too. What I don't like is the childish provocativeness of the lyrics; makes me feel "I'm too old for this pooh" :)
