It's amazing what you can get away with...

...if the song sounds cheerful and bubble-gummish.Harry Nilsson wrote this little jewel for *the Monkees*. It showed up in one of those little music-video-like bits that weren't part of the story they used to put at the end of some shows, with the boys performing a song.In this case, they were all dressed up in white pants, striped blazers and straw hats (even Nesmith, of course).Davy cheerfully sang the song."...you're not the only cherry delightthat was left in the nightand gave up without a fight..."?Hello?(I found the clip; forgot about the blonde.)
Watch Mickey with the cane, along about 1:55 or so...

  1. fairportfan says Watching Davy dancing wit the girl in that clip reminded me of this, from the movie *Head*:Also by Nilsson.
The other dancer is the film's choreographer, *Toni Basil*.
Right. The same Toni Basil who was going to have a hit with Mickey - thirteen years later.

  3. Mike the Knife says Actually, this song is a well-known Nilsson number called "Cuddly Toy" that the Monkees covered right after the composer put it out on his 1967 album Pandemonium Shadow Show.

  4. Mike the Knife says That said, loved the Davy Jones/Toni Basil duet.

  5. fairportfan says Okay. Wasn't aware of the chronology. Apparently Nilsson pitched cit to the Monkees - possibly before the album release. I never had that album - the only Nilsson stuff i had from that period was *Aerial Pandemonium Ballet*... Did you know Nilsson wrote for *the Turtles*, too? (I just discovered that there's a 2CD set with *Pandemonium Shadow Show*, *Aerial Ballet* and *Aerial Pandemonium Ballet* {plus some tracks, i think} available for $19.98 new and $12,98 used on Amazon...) Did you know that PSS was originally to be titled *Something Wicked This Way Comes*, but clearance from Bradbury didn't come through in time?

  6. Mike the Knife says Yes and yes. Nilsson, Turtles, Monkees. Very summer-y sounds. And very, very L.A. - in the best possible way.

  7. fairportfan says The funny part about wanting clearance to use *Something Wicked This Way Comes*, not getting it, and using *Pandemonium Shadow Show* is that "Something wicked..." is a quote from Shakespeare, so it ought to be free and clear ... but "Pandemonium Shadow Show" is one of Bradbury's own lines (from "Cougar and Dark's Pandemonium Shadow Show", the name of the carnival in the book...)

  11. fairportfan says Maybe Target I don't know; *Mike* seems to be up on things Nilssonish - perhaps he knows...

  12. Spike says I enjoyed these confections. I was too blindered a snob to watch the Monkees before just now. Now I'm finally alive.
