WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Sony to buy Gracenote - Be Afraid. Be Very Afraid.

The people who have demonstrated that they have noting but contempt for the rights of music consumers - Sony ("*See a post about their DRM rootkit malware at my old blog*":http://electronictiger.net/roare/2005/11/talkin-sony-bmg-drm-rootkit-malware.html) - are buying Gracenote (formerly CDDB):

Sony to Buy Gracenote Music Data Company

Sony Corp. of America will buy Gracenote, which made its name with software that identifies digital music files, for about US$260 million.
Sony will keep Gracenote as a wholly owned subsidiary and use its technology in its own digital content, service and device offerings. But Gracenote's current business will keep operating separately and developing new technologies, and its management will remain, Sony said. It will pay $260 million plus "other contingent consideration," the company said.

This makes me very nervous.
Will Sony start monitoring data requests to CDDB to see if you have music you didn't pay for?

  1. Wahiawa786 says Since I still buy music CDs, I've been wondering why Sony (Music) would gain from buying Gracenote. From a naive point of view, this kind of data allows them to see which recording consortium's artist lineup is doing vs. their stable of musical hires. If I were an iTunes digital music downloader, this news is more of a "so that's what those clueless dopes at Sony are doing?" observation. I guess we need to send an "AF's water system is broken" message to get Sony to show their hand.

Would this only come in handy for those using iTunes to play their music or are other online services using Gracenote? If it is only iTunes...then Sony BMG would not be getting a true picture of what the general online population is listening to. Just a theory. Not really sure what any of this means in the long run.

Gracenote's data is employed by Apple iTunes, Yahoo Music Engine, AOL Winamp, Real Rhapsody, and Napster, not to mention consumer electronics brands Panasonic, Samsung, and Sony.

  4. Spike says But now Sony can finally get a clearer view of what we, the avant-hip of Mog's upper-crust, are actually listening to when we're away from Mog, and they can then be awestruck, which was their secret goal.
