If Saul Bass had designed the "Star Wars" credits...

Posted about 1 year ago
*Saul Bass* is probably the most famous and respected titles/graphic designer in the history of Hollywood. Some of the films for which he designed the titles:
*Around the World in Eighty Days*, *Saint Joan*, *Vertigo*, *The Big Country*, *Anatomy of a Murder*, *North by Northwest*, *Psycho**, *Ocean's Eleven* (1960), *Exodus*, *West Side Story*, *Walk on the Wild Side*, *It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World*, *Grand Prix*, *Alien*, *Cape Fear*, *Goodfellas*, *The War of the Roses*, *Big*, & *Broadcast News*
So, here is some smartass's idea as to how the credits for *Star Wars* (the first film, which will always be just *Star Wars* to those of us who saw it in tis first release) might have looked if Bass had done them:***There are semi-credible rumours that, indeed, Bass was the actual director of the shower scene in *Psycho*, which he designed and story-boarded with Hitchcock.

  1. Spike says The video captures it perfectly. I actually smiled. But for me the really interesting thing is that it says Adam Beckett supervised the animation for Star Wars. His name rung a bell. Thirty-odd years ago I used to go see short underground films and his films were among them. Now, after Googling him, I realize he made the big time.

  2. fairportfan says You want to see a list of people who made the big time? Look at the credits for *Laserblast*, *Flesh Gordon* and *Dark Star*. (If you watch *Dark Star* and then rewatch *Star Wars*, you'll see that the computer search - when R2 is scanning the Death Star's plans - is essentially identical to the similar scene in *Dark Star*, which came before *Star Wars* ... because Dan O'Bannon did both of them, before he went on to write *Alien*...)

  3. Spike says That's interesting. I'm ashamed to admit I've never seen Dark Star, but plan to now. Writing Alien gets my admiration.

  4. fairportfan says O'Bannon also *starred* in *Dark Star* - which he co-wrote with *John Carpenter*, who directed it.

  5. Spike says Even more reason for me to see it. I'm getting the hang of this bold type.
