Trillions for "Defense" - veryvery few pennies for veterans

Posted over 4 years ago
Seems as if "never" means "not for twenty-four hours, at least" in the current Administration's lexicon:
*Say One Thing, Do Another -- Bush on Veterans Day and Today*
Jon Soltz/*Hufington Post*
This weekend, President Bush said in his radio address, "[Veterans] continue to strengthen and inspire our Nation. And we will never forget what we owe them."
Today, the President vetoed legislation that would have provided:
• $3.4 billion for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), which provides mental health and suicide prevention services - at a time when the Army suicide rate is at its highest in over 25 years.
• $10 million for Brain Injury Prevention for our veterans.
• $5.2 billion for Veteran Job Training and placement programs, as well as homelessness prevention programs that benefit our veterans.
Last week, I stood up with Senators Dick Durbin and Jack Reed, pleading for Congress to pass this bill - and they did. But, despite the President talking a lot about what we owe veterans on Saturday, today, with his veto pen he told veterans, "We don't owe you [BLEEP]."
("*Read the whole post at the Huffington Post*":http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jon-soltz/say-one-thing-do-another_b_72422.html
So the President *says* that the total cost of his war is $800-billion-plus, but Congress's accounting agency says the total cost will run in excess of $1.6 *trillion*.
Yes, there was pork in that bill - but, ya know, i'd rather see money spent on things that actually benefit *someone* here in the US instead of wasted on the wrong war in the wrong time in the wrong place ... by a chicken-hawk President who obviously has no understanding of the implied contract between the nation and its warriors/veterans...
