Possibly the Sickest Song Ever Written by Goffin & King

Posted about 1 year ago

Another in a series of posts that began as comments to other people:

Anna has a post up entitled I Loathe This Song! which you should go look at (Do not, under any circumstances, listen to the song sh has a link to. It will shrivel your brain.)

The song (if you want to dignify it by that label) actually (as is remarked in the Comments section) actually manages to make Spice Girls lyrics sound feminist.

Well, i'd been kicking this idea around for a while, and so:

Lyrics for: He Hit Me (It Felt Like A Kiss):
He hit me and it felt like a kiss He hit me but it didn't hurt me He couldn't stand to hear me say That I'd been with someone new And when I told him I had been untrue
He hit me (da-da-da-ah) and it felt like a kiss (felt like a kiss) He hit me (da-da-da-ah) and I knew he loved me If he didn't care for me, I could have never made him mad But he hit me (da-da-da-ah) and I was glad
(Da-da-da-ah) (Da-da-da-ah)
Yes, he hit me (da-da-da-ah) and it felt like a kiss (felt like a kiss) He hit me (da-da-da-ah) and I knew I loved him And then, he took me in his arms With all the tenderness there is And when he kissed me (da-da-da-ah), he made me his (Da-da-da)

There is a graphic novel (For those not aware of the term, that's a comic book with delusions of grandeur - and, yes, i love comics almost as much as i love music) called Mad Love. It's based on the animated Batman series, and it's the story of the Joker's girlfriend Harley Quinn, and how she went from being psychologist Dr. Harleen Quinzel to being a total psycho herself. (My Amazon review of it, titled Scarier Than The Joker Himself is posted on my website.) in it Harley does something that pisses Joker off. Never mind what; read the graphic novel (if you can find a copy). The important part is this:

  2. fairportfan says There can be no doubt, If you read the whole thing, you can see that it's a classic abusive/co-dependent relationship. In a sequence in the regular animation-based comic, "Gotham Adventures", Harley, proclaimed sane, finds herself in a position of dominance over the Joker and comes within ames ace of bashing out his brains with a portable typewriter, saying between clenched teeth as she raises it as high as she can oer the helpless Joker on the floor "...and *this* is because you never really loved me!" The "Adventures" series books - the DC code-word for "animations series based" - were, and i say this as someone who's been reading Batman stories for more than fifty years, the *best* over-all Batman comics *ever*. BTW - what's the difference between a co-dependednt and a toilet? A toilet doesn't follow you around when you're not using it.

  4. Mike the Knife says Nice pop-culture intersect for those unfamiliar with one, the other, or both, fpf. (Unlike me, who is so deeply immersed that I should have been exiled to a deserted island if I hadn't gotten the song reference in "Mad Love.")
