WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Symphony Hour: György Ligeti

Posted over 3 years ago
For those of you who don't know, I sometimes produce a radio program on classical music for KRFC 88.9 fm in Fort Collins Colorado. I switch off hosting duties with the local symphony conductor. Over the summer, he travels so much that the show is basically mine every week. This week will feature the music of György Ligeti. The show begins at 5:00 PM Sunday Mountain Standard Time. If you're in Ft. Collins, tune in to 88.9 fm. Outside of Ft. Collins, you can stream it here.

  1. Tanuki San says Dennis, Do you have a copy of "The Planets" by Gustaf Holst? (I think that's the composer, I may be wrong) I love those pieces...

  2. fadoraboy says Yes, in fact I have two recordings. I also have a copy of the orchestral score if you're interested. Holst is one of my all time favorites. I like him so much that his image graces a tee-shirt I can be seen wearing frequently. If you like "The Planets," you should check out "A Somerset Rhapsody," "St. Paul's Suite" and "Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda." My favorite movement of "The Planets" is "Jupiter: Bringer of Jolity." Yours?

  3. Tanuki San says Jupiter as well! Mars is also a winner, of course. Best 5/4 piece of music ever. Jolity... pphhh...

  4. fadoraboy says Ok, I must agree that Mars is a great 5/4 piece, however, don't overlook such classics as the 2nd movment to Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony, or the "Mission Impossible Theme." Oh, and practically anything in 5/4 on Illinoise or vee device's upcoming album...

  5. Tanuki San says I'll just have to hear vee device's new album then! You just wait for our crazy 9/8 time signatures... actually they're not even that noticeable...
