Sad Songs and Waltzes

Posted almost 6 years ago
After a recent (ok, not so recent, but still lingering) breakup with a long term girlfriend, I've found myself listening to music which helps to explore and digest the various feelings I've been having. One I've listened to lots lately is The Mountain Goats' "No Children." As vee once put it, it is a song with absolutely no positive statements in it whatsoever. Very good for those angry moments.Another, which I often find myself playing on guitar is Partrick Sky's "The Girl I Once Did Own." It's not out on CD anywhere, but if you can find an old LP of A Harvest of Gentile Clang by all means snatch it up. One of his finest songs by far."I Courted a Wee Girl," especially the version that Dervish does of it is another fine song for broken hearted souls the world over. Probably one of the saddest songs ever written.Regina Spektor provides some comfort as well with both "Fidelity" and "Summer in the City" from her new record. "Fidelity" in particular, because many of the lines in it were spoken by my ex almost verbatim at some point in our relationship. Creepy...Also floating through my head often are a few lines from the folk song, "The Americans Have Stolen My True Love Away.""For the meeting is a pleasure, but partings a grief,And an unconstant lover is worse than a thief,For a thief he will but rob you, take all you have,But an inconstant lover brings you to the grave.
The Grave it will rot you, and bring you to dust,And there is not one in twenty pretty ladies you can trust,For they'll kiss you, and court you and sware they'll prove true,And the very next morning they will bid you adieu."

Hopefully happy times will find me again soon. Till then, I have these sad songs to keep me company.
