Dashing Through the Mog

So the Trans-Siberian Orchestra will be in Columbia, SC on my birthday, and I want to go. I'm trying to win tickets, but maybe if I don't my fellow will still take me. Have any of you ever been to one of their concerts?Quote from their website that is relevant to music and art in general:"Once when asked what Trans-Siberian Orchestra was about, Paul O'Neill (lyricist, composer, and producer who formed the orchestra in 1996) replied, "It's about creating great art. When asked to define what great art was, Paul said, "The purpose of art is to create an emotional response in the person that is exposed to that art. And there are three categories of art; bad art, good art and great art. Bad art will elicit no emotional response in the person that is exposed to it, i.e.; a song you hear in an elevator and it does nothing to you, a picture on a wall that gives you the same emotional response as if the wall had been blank, a movie that chews up time. Good art will make you feel an emotion that you have felt before; you see a picture of a forest and you remember the last time you went fishing with your dad, you hear a song about love and you remember the last time you were in love. Great art will make you feel an emotion you have never felt before; seeing the pieta, the world famous sculpture byMichelangelo, can cause someone to feel the pain of losing a child even if they've never had one. And when you're trying for these emotions the easiest one to trigger is anger.Anyone can do it. Go into the street, throw a rock at someone, you will make them angry. The emotions of love, empathy and laughter are much harder to trigger, but since they operate on a deeper level, they bring a much greater reward."You can see all the band members at the website, if you're interested. Also lots of sound clips and a narrative of the stories behind the music. And fantastic wallpaper/backgrounds. I'm listening to the rock opera version of "Christmas Eve in Sarajevo" right now, and it's awesome. http://www.trans-siberian.com/multimedia/index.shtmlA MAD RUSSIAN'S CHRISTMAS(Instrumental)THE PRINCE OF PEACEIn the middle of a forestThere's a clearing by a streamWhere a mother holds her newbornAnd the child begins to dreamAnd he dreams of hopes unspokenWhen the tears of man will ceaseAnd his mother holds him closerFor he is the Prince of peaceAnd the moon is looking downwardCasting shadows through the treesAnd the stars are shining brighterAs they whisper what they seeHow the emperor and the pauperWith the lion and the lambKneel down before the infantFor his peace they understandHark, the herald angels singGlory to the newborn kingPeace on earth and mercy mildGod and sinners reconciledGlory all ye nations riseJoin the triumph of the skiesWith the heavenly host proclaimChrist is born in BethlehemHark, the herald angels singGlory to the newborn kingLet the bells ring out these tidingsLet it echo across the landThat a king is born in BethlehemAnd his kingdom is at handLet the world rejoice togetherAs it looks upon the starsKnowing every man's our brotherAnd that every child is oursAs he flew o'er SarajevoThere were scars upon the landThere were scars upon the peopleIt was hard to understandAnd the deepest scars of allWhich to humans are unseenBut the angel could see clearlyWere the scars upon the dreamsLike Belfast and BurundiRwanda, PalestineThe only decorations hereHad been awarded for their crimesAnd in gardens where the children playedNow soldiers only trodAnd stranger still, he heard some sayThat they were killing for their godNow the angel heard god speak many timesAnd he had always paid attentionBut this killing of ones neighborWas something the Lord had never mentionedBut as he neared the earthOf a recent battlegroundFrom among the ruinsHe once more heard the soundIt was a single cello playingA forgotten Christmas songAnd even on that battlefieldThe song somehow belongedAnd as he flew awayThe angel did take noteThat where he found this music playedOne always could find hope

  2. extraordinarypoems says And yes, I read someone else's post on the TSO today --- full of negative characterizations of the people who might like TSO. Made me laugh after I got over the initial insult --- over-generalization is always a sign of a weak argument. I bet it's going to be a terrific show.

  10. chucky says Ah. I've seen clips of their performances. Looked great. I also completey understand what he meant about great art. I walked down the aisle to TSO's "Christmas Canon," and the song makes me tear up. Not because I got married to it, but because it makes me feel things I don't normally feel. That's why I chose it for my wedding.

  13. lemontwist says I saw them maybe two or three years ago. They did some amazing music but their show was really long and I got bored (so did my mom and my sister who is another music lover). I think we may have left after 2 or 3 hours with the show still showing no signs of stopping. That said, I'd still recommend going to see them. The music was fantastic, even though the show was way too long.

  14. extraordinarypoems says I appreciate everyone's comments. Lemontwist, I find it hard to sit still for anything over two hours --- the Lord of the Rings, for instance was so fabulous, but it was way too long for one sitting. So, if TSO has a show that long, I'll probably leave early too. But I'm sure I'll enjoy that first two hours.
