miniature tigers bring new meaning to the term "painfully catchy"

in the long standing battle over which song i like best by the mini tigers (it was "the wolf" for some time) this one has inevitably won out.

how can a song about carnage be so damn catchy?

i have disappeared for a few weeks. and i'm gonna disappear for another couple too, but first i wanted to drop off a little something.

a violin, a trumpet, and a rap about riding a bike with no handlebars.

of course i love it :)

The official music video for Phantom Planet's new single "Do the Panic."

It's painfully catchy.

Does anyone else here do the Tim Tang Test?

If you do, then let me know how you're doing with it. I'm interested to know! I'm only on level 33.

If you don't, then welcome to the madness: http://www.timtang.com/ttt/

It's the longest and hardest online puzzle. No one has ever complete all 200 levels.

Yes, this is how I spend my free time :P

Just got the new album from Phantom Planet!

So for the next few days I will be in solitude, listening and relistening, and just feeling it out. I don't want to say too much before I give it several good run-throughs. But so far it's catchy tunes and catchy lyrics. What a great combination.

So far the highlights are Leader, Dropped, Geronimo, and Ship Lost At Sea.

Expect a review in the near future.

And i didn't forget about getting you some songs Tyler :)

ONE WEEK

YAY! My email notifications are working again! YAY! (that one is for YGL and her crank yankers hehe)

In celebration, here are the newest Phantom Planet lyrics.

Nothing short of genius in my opinion.

Ship Lost at Sea

Hey!
Arms of the ocean reach out for you!
Rusty pipes
Can’t help calling for you too!
The brine is finer than wine,
But be careful not to drink too much,
Cause there are remains on the bottom of that cup.
If you fear you’ve had enough
Of that salty stuff,
I’m on the beach
Reading a book.
Lost in a page.
Lost for an age.
I could be your bonfire
And you could be my ship out at sea
Look,
I’m not after your charity
And My Dear, I don’t want you pleased with yourself .
What is that feeling of pride -
When you throw your coin in a beggar’s cap?
Selfless acts are quite selfish when you think about ’em like that!
But I’ve been thinking of you
And how to improve.
Cause I’m in a fix
And your heart is a tool.
Help someone who’s close!
Could be me, right?
Who knows?
You could be my handout,
And I’d be your good deed for the day -

I want a puzzle I don’t have to beat
A watch I don’t have to wind
I really want to find your missing piece
And make it
Mine all mine all mine!

So If you’re hopeless and beat,
Lower than your feet,
Or up to your neck,
Or down on your knees,
In way too deep,
And out of ideas
I can be your brainchild,
If you promise to take care of me.
Whoa.
I could be your bonfire
And you could be my ship out at sea
I can be your boyfriend
And you can pretend not to know me

One week til Raise the Dead!

I'm occasionally entitled to act 12

This is what I did with my Saturday.
I returned to my old stomping grounds of BU to visit the friends I left behind when I transferred to NYC.
So we decide to go to karaoke. There are cash prizes for the best acts. So we decide to devise a cheesy routine to score brownie points. Since there were 5 of us girls, I imagine you can guess where this is going..
Yep, we were the Spice Girls.
Here's us doing the signature peace sign pose that the SGs were so fond of.

And here's us posing exactly like one of their pictures... now you can tell who was who.

The DJ was super excited to see us perform. Apparently not many people create routines for karaoke night (who knew?) But unfortunately, he lost the Spice Girls record...
So we performed "You're the One that I
Want" from Grease. Drunk old people love that song.
So, now you guys have embarassing pictures of me to use as blackmail, have fun :)

Counting Crows - Real and Raw

Just saw the Counting Crows perform at the Apple Store in SoHo. I gotta say that the main thing that always sticks out to me is the raw honesty that seems to permeate every Crows song. Adam Duritz said himself in an interview for The Aquarian Weekly that a lot of people told him to not release some of the songs on the new album. Songs like 1492 and You Can't Count on Me (both of which i've posted), because they showed Duritz in a negative light. Duritz's response to this was, "It's ugly to them, but to me, it's kind of the point of it all, like it or not... If you're an artist, you owe the truth. Period. That's all you really owe. People can make judgements whether they like it or not. For me, it's exactly how I felt. Maybe my style's over-raw."

Well, the honesty pays off because from what I've heard so far the new album, Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings, is real and gritty and it works.

If only the majority of bands out there were half as brave.

If only I was half as brave.. :)

the video quality could be a tad bit better. but the performance quality couldn't :)

And I would walk 500 miles

I just watched Benny and Joon for about the 20th time yesterday. It's one of my all-time favorites. Not only is the plot original and the acting amazing. But it also has a pretty great soundtrack.

Did somebody say one-hit wonder?

Groovy Russian Ska Punk

Leave it to me to turn my homework into something about music. Here I am studying the geography of the Russian Empire for my Soviet Experiment midterm. I start looking up stuff about Leningrad (now known as St. Petersburg) which was the capital of Russia back in the day. And I stumble across a ska punk band called Leningrad.

Anyways, here's one of their songs. I think I would actually like it a lot if the Russian language was a little more melodic. OK, back to studying....

These guys blow my mind. They are so funky and diverse with their music. This is the only song of theirs that I could get an MP3 of. Otherwise I would have posted "Terminal" or "Anomaly." Those songs will floor you.

Go check them out! I promise you won't regret it! http://www.myspace.com/offthebridge

Here's a brash statement: I miss the old Good Charlotte. Not saying they made amazing music, but i grew up to their self-titled album. I miss this GC.

I miss the funny, fun loving, outcasts from Waldorf, MD. They're so celebrity now. Well, at least the Madden twins are. I mean, come on... Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton? Whatever happened to "Girls don't like boys. Girls like cars and money" and "Losing their souls in a material world"?

Can't i have these guys back?

"There are two kinds of secrets — ones that we keep from others, ones that we hide from ourselves."

It occured to me last night that we just all want to feel like we're connected in some way. Isn't that what life is about after all? Isn't that why we create things like online blogs?

I've been a huge fan of PostSecret ever since a friend introduced it to me. A lot of people think that secrets need to be kept hidden. But sharing them is what creates those connections between us.

I teared up when i saw this video.

"If you've never stared off into the distance, then your life is a shame"

Here i am at quarter til 3 in the morning, in the dark, in my room. My roommate's asleep, but i've been up staring out my window at the City's skyline. The lights never go off out there. There's always some beacon, some landmark to guide the lost souls home.

Except this isn't my home. Not if home is where the heart is. Did you know that love is the most written about, sung about, and talked about of all emotions? That fact calms my mind on nights like tonight. There's hope.

I'm done with settling. There's got to be more to life than wanting more.

But i don't just want more.... i want to BE more. And dammit, i will be.

A lullaby will do me good right now. As sadly sweet as it is.

(The painting's called Soul's Journey, by the way)

For the rest of you who are still searching for something, anything... I hope you find it

the piper's calling you to join him

after a very long dry spell, i'm finally feeling creative again. i guess i just had a lot of other stuff to get out of the way. i just finished moving and now i can finally appreciate the artistic juices that are flowing in nyc. yesterday i wrote my first set of lyrics in over 2 years. and as soon as i get some new guitar strings an accompanying melody will follow shortly :)

i love indie music, but i also love mainstream. why do some people think that's a sin or something? it's about the music, not the label. i say enough with the indie elitism. :)

ok, i'm gonna go be creative some more :)

who wants to play?

i'm bored. let's play a game.

here's how to play: i'm gonna write down a few lines to a fairly well-known song. then whoever responds first has to list the artist and song title and provide their own lyrics for the next person to guess.

the trick is to pick songs that people will be able to recognize while still making it a challenge.

ok, my choice of lyrics is:

"But we were gonna be the wildest people they ever hoped to see
Just you and me"

any takers?

sneak peek

a little preview of phantom planet's long awaited new album. the band has finally confirmed that the cd will officially be released on april 15th after numerous postponements due to the band's switch from a major label with epic to an indie label with fueled by ramen.

here's alex recording guitar for what i think might be my favorite song: Geronimo.

and here is the recording of another new favorite: Leader.

which one is willing to lose?

i can't sleep. so here i am trying to listen to soothing music to help the process along. i have an early class tomorrow and if i don't sleep soon, i will most likely sleep through my alarm. while sifting through my playlists, i realized that i never posted about this song. i think "i would like to know who is the wounded one. which one will make the move? which one is willing to lose?" is one of my favorite lyrics right now.

this song makes me want to cuddle up on a couch and watch the snow drifting past the picture window.

i've been thinking about haunting songs ever since my post about "the boys of summer." and today i was reminded of this one. by a ford commercial, no less :]

once i start listening to it, i just can't stop. it's almost hypnotizing

so, it's december 1st. crazy, right? it's almost 2008. and it's almost time for me to move to nyc. it's crazy to think of how much things have changed this year. and the holiday season will be over in another month. but the best is yet to come. i'm really looking forward to winter break. i get to see my sisters who i haven't seen in a while. and i'm sure that in another couple weeks we'll all be sick of christmas carols. but until then, let's enjoy one song that i can replay over and over without it becoming old.

i finally found a cover that i like better than the original.

working class hero by john lennon (original obviously)

let's talk covers

very rarely do i like covers better than originals. kinda like how movies are rarely better than the books they're based on. or remakes are never as good. or sequels for that matter.

anyway, not to get off topic. i've been struggling with the ataris remake of boys of summer by don henley. there's just something so haunting about henley's version that somehow gets lost in the ataris cover. but at the same time, i like how they made it slightly heavier and faster. it adds a kind of desperation to it. you tell me.

this song has been stuck in my head all day. so here i am to get it stuck in your head :) let's take a moment to appreciate the longetivity of a song like this. i hope at least one person enjoys this :) ok, i'm off to watch the discovery channel because i am indeed uncool. but i think we're all a little uncool deep down. ok, maybe not so deep :)

bands you love to hate

ok, fess up.

who are the bands and musicians you cannot stand? sure, you can hate them music-wise. but it's even more interesting if you like their music, but just hate them.

take kanye west for instance. i'm the first to say that his new album is incredible. but the problem is... i have no respect for kanye west. he is completely arrogant.

so are the members of hinder. now, their music isn't amazing, but it's a guilty pleasure of mine.

how about you guys? does your hate of a band or musician lessen your love of their music? do you need to respect them to like what they create? or can you separate the two?

i'm sure trying to. because i am in love with this song.

music is beauty

this is one of those songs that can't really be accurately described. i think the english language doesn't have enough adjectives. i guess i'd say it's tragically beautiful. and tragic beauty is certainly more beautiful than no beauty :) and beauty after all, is what music is all about, right?

i haven't written about any new discoveries lately, so here goes. i found this band a while back and just never got around to posting about them. they are the honey brothers from new york and they are fun and funny (without being terrible music-wise as is sometimes the case hah) here is there music video for "some of them are nice days" (yes that drummer is adrian grenier for those that are wondering) :D

phantom planet sneak peek

gah, i just wrote this and deleted it. anyway, who's pumped about the new phantom planet album due out this summer? i am! i've had the great pleasure of seeing these boys live and over the years (the 8 or so years i've been listening to them) they've become one of my favorite bands. but the reason i write is because PP just started releasing footage of some of their songs from the new album on their youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=Phantom36 . so far, my favorite is "geronimo" so here's a clip of alex recording guitar for this song.

there's all kinds of behind-the-scene/onstage/being funny footage on their channel. check it out. and hopefully PP will announce an official release date soon! :D

8-year-old guitar wonder

first of all, can i just tell you how much this kid puts me to shame? seriously, when i was his age, i was still singing along to barney's "i love you, you love me." this is a video of him when he was 6 on the ellen show. he's playing "twist and shout" by the beatles. how adorable is this :) oh and don't forget to check out the end of this video where he starts playing the blues :D

this is a video of him when he was 7, yeah he already had a band by age 7. this is a solo he rocked during a performance. seriously, he must have started playing when he was still in diapers. he's definitely going somewhere.

one last brilliant solo during "while my guitar gently weeps"

ataxia - automatic writing II (i'm excited)

YAY!!

"On May 29th, 2007 Record Collection will release the long awaited second half of John Frusciante, Joe Lally (Fugazi) and Josh Klinghoffer's (Bicycle Theif, PJ Harvey) ATAXIA sessions...

Pre-ordering for the album will be available starting April 18th on John Frusciante's official website. ATAXIA - AUTOMATIC WRITING II will be available on vinyl & CD through mail order only via the John Frusciante Online Store.
A special pre-order bundle will include the album and ATAXIA II T-shirt for a limited time at a discounted price.
Visit the new John Frusciante Online store for details.

ATAXIA was a band for about two weeks in February 2004. It’s members are Joe Lally of Fugazi, Josh Klinghoffer and John Frusciante.

The word ‘Ataxia’ is Greek for ‘disorder’. We were unaware at the time that it also has a meaning in English which is: total or partial inability to coordinate voluntary bodily movements, as in walking.

In keeping with our names’ Greek meaning (quite unintentionally), the sections of our songs never had an arranged order. All our songs’ foundations are the bass which always plays one part throughout. The drums and guitar move about and generally use the vocal as their guide. The vocals and words were written, but the order the vocal sections occurred in, and how long the spaces between were, was different every time. So we would all stay on our toes to stay together for dynamics, changes in groove, switches to new sections, etc.

We played two shows and recorded two records. The first record was released in August 2004. It was named after the surrealist activity called Automatic Writing. That was where people like Andre Breton and Max Ernst would write words in the form of sentences and paragraphs, but with absolutely no conscious attempt at meaning. They would observe the structure of their subconscious and it’s peculiar methods of organization (or the lack thereof) this way. And if there is one sure answer I can give to the question, “How did you write and record two albums in a week and a half?”, it is that we gave absolutely no thought to what we were doing, whatsoever.

This music is unblemished by any expectations of a specific result, on our part. The three of us simply got together to hear what music had to say that week. We had fun together and this is the record of that fun."

- John Frusciante

so it's april fools day (9 days til my birthday woo! :) ) i have to admit that someone got me good today. and no, it wasn't a friend. it was none other than mr. adam duritz of the counting crows. he announed this morning that the cc's were breaking up due to a massive fight during their recording session last night... and yes, i'm a sucker ;) so in celebration of their continued recording of, perhaps, their greatest record ever made, i'm posting an old-school song. one of my favorites :D

pleasantly surprised

so i was in the book store again today buying a pretty cool "guide to all things punk rock" book thing for my friend's birthday and i stumbled upon the bargain room. and the first thing i saw was "tommyland," tommy lee's autobiography. it was only $6 so i caved (due to my uncontrollable love of memoirs) and bought it since i have a 4 hour bus ride to endure tomorrow. and i started reading it, expecting nothing spectacular (not really expecting much at all actually). but i have to say that i'm pleasantly surprised with the book. of course it has the stuff that you would expect from tommy lee, mainly lots of stuff about sex. but there was also a lot of stuff i didn't expect. for example, he only spends about 30 pages of the whole book chronicling his part in motley crue. and much more time talking of his relationships, jail time, and (most endearingly) his kids. so it gives a new perspective on tommy without making him seem falsely wise beyond his years. i just have to admit my actual enjoyment of this autobiography because in a really weird and unexpected way, it's actually made me gain (dare i say it?) some respect for the man. in accordance with all things cliched, there actually is more to him than meets the eye (or camera lens). i guess i just like the truth, unsugarcoated and unpretentious. i'll let you know if my opinion changes once i've read the whole thing. :)

i just almost accidentally threw out this album, and it's one of my favorites. that would have been a tragedy. good thing i saw it before it was too late, especially since i never put this one on itunes. maybe i'll do that now. to celebrate my triumph over disaster, here's a song that has always intrigued me. the guitar is sort of hypnotic. and the i've always been curious about the title :)

confessions of a mogger

it's time for everyone to fess up to their guilty pleasures. what songs do you dance around to when you're home alone? what bands are you ashamed to admit to liking? well it's time to get passed all that embarassment because everyone has at least one guilty pleasure. mine are as follows: "what goes around" by justin timberlake, "this ain't a scene" by fallout boy, chris brown in general, the juliana theory, the black eyed peas (although i'm not too fond of fergie's solo stuff... but i'll admit to liking "my humps"), good charlotte, creed, "crash into me" by dave matthews band, michael jackson, phil collins, simple plan's "no pads, no helmets, just balls" album, smash mouth, and even some panic! at the disco. ok, i think that's pretty much the extent of music i've been laughed at for listening to, but i still fessed up. now it's your turn. let's see who can make the most people shake their heads in disgrace, lol.

a compromise for hip hop night

i've been on mog for over a month now but i still haven't posted anything for our weekly hip hop night. i really should be doing my french homework instead of being on mog, so i'm gonna make a compromise. since it's hip hop night and since i should be doing french, how about i post a french hip hop song that we heard in class last semester? sound fair haha.

favorite a cappellas (of songs by the postal service, the mighty mighty bosstones, and more)

so i've stated a billion times that i like bands with unique instruments.. so it should come as no surprise that i like a cappella groups because they essentially use their mouths as every instrument in every song. it basically amazes me. here are some of the performances i've been to the past year at my school.

this is "chordially yours," an all-female group that one of my friends is in. here they are performing midnight train to georgia. (this isn't the performance i was at, but this video had better sound quality)

this is "the manic optimists," an all-male group from bates college that performed during "chordially yours" intermission at the show i went to. here they are performing such great heights by the postal service.

another "man-ops" video of the impression that i get by the mighty mighty bosstones (the background vocal work is amazing in this one)

and finally, this is "the dear abbeys," an all-male group (from my school just like "chords" ). they're also the largest a cappella group on campus. they are performing all night long. their beat boxer is incredible.

this one's for ishmael beah

i had no idea what blood diamond was about when i agreed to go see it with one of my friends. and no, i didn't know sierra leone even existed until i saw that movie. and yes, it is a shame. and while i'd like to blame high school history for only covering north america and europe, it's partially my own fault that i'm not aware of what's happening in other countries (it's only in thanks to the close-up washington program that i learned about the darfur situation a whole 6 months before it became somewhat common knowledge). and today i was perusing the shelfs of the barnes and noble on my campus and found a book written by ishmael beah called "a long way gone: memoirs of a child soldier" and started reading it. and yes, beah was a child soldier in none other than sierra leone. it's funny how some events in life coincide like that. anyways, i have to thank beah for not only educating me, but also for turning me onto a song that he discusses in his memoir, "rapper's delight" by the sugarhill gang (the song that made him want to learn english really well). even if you aren't into rap, give it a listen for no other reason than its incredible bassline :)

and this is a link to some video clips of beah talking about his book... maybe some moggers want to read it too. of what i've read so far, it's intense yet inspiring. and beah himself is extremely likable. http://www.alongwaygone.com/media.html

i just found out that blackpool lights is being featured in ap's "100 bands you need to know in 2007." it's weird that all of my favorite indie bands are getting recognized at the same time... first base2, now blackpool lights. who's next? my vote's on kicking buckets. anyways, back to BL. i saw these guys live by chance when they opened for social d last fall and i have to say that they completely rocked the house. they're a relatively new band (having only been founded in 2004.. although all the band members were in previous bands). here's a couple tracks off their first (and only, as of yet) full length album "This Town's Disaster."

BU fire

so by now the fire at my school is national news. two dead, one injured, thousands affected. i can't really explain why i feel so moved by this tragedy. i didn't know the victims or any of their friends or family. maybe it's just because this is the third such tragedy that has happened at my school since i came here in september. last semester i lived in the hyatt regency in cambridge because it served as overflow housing for students because there wasn't enough room on campus. one international student from venezula was hit and killed by a car while walking back to the hyatt from campus. she was hit with enough force to be knocked right out of her shoes. then at the beginning of this semester a guy (who was also in the hyatt fall semester) fell out of the fourth story window of his dormitory... now this. i'm starting to dread checking my bu email because it's beginning to bear more and more "letters to the bu community" from the dean of students. sometimes i go to the chapel in my free time to reflect or just sit in the empty space listening to the peace and quiet. today i went to do the same, and was surprised to see a bunch of people in there. it seems that i'm not the only one who is affected by this growing number of tragedies. i was also completely rocked by these people's constant effort to comfort others even in the time of their own grief. almost as soon as i entered my school's chapel i was approached by a couple others and asked if i would like to talk or join in the prayer circle. so even while i'm saddened by the losses not only on my own campus, but in the world... i am even moreso consoled and deeply moved by humanity's love each other. i guess in a way, loss makes us stronger.

and while this song doesn't really fit what i wrote about, i think the feeling of it somehow works. and ironically enough, one of the girls who passed away in the fire was named rhiannon....

this is the newest music video from base 2. it was shot in a warehouse in new haven, ct pretty near my city. a couple of my close friends are mixed in the crowd in the video because they know the band pretty well and base 2 put out an open invite for extras. this really made me wish i was home for the video shoot :( but hopefully i'll catch them the next time.

why i love stroke 9

this song is one of the reasons i love stroke 9. they are an honest band and don't try to get by based on image. the lyrics in this song are what made me buy one of their cds in the first place.

"i used to be a nerd
grew up in the suburbs"

they definitely don't pretend to be badass :)

musical chemistry

this video is a john frusciante and flea jam that serves as the intro to californication live at slane castle. i just have to say that these two guys are amazing and have some of the best musical chemistry i've ever witnessed. this jam is totally improvised, just listen to the way they complement each other. it's almost like they can read each other's minds
