Long Black Limousine

Posted over 3 years ago

In honor of the upcoming WFMU Record Fair, I thought I'd post one of my favorite pick ups from last year. O.C. Smith is the artist and the album is Hickory Holler Revisited (Smith made his name with a version of "Son of Hickory Holler's Tramp.") This tune I knew first from Gram Parsons, and although there may be less biographical resonance for O.C. than Gram (Smith went on to become a pastor and live out a full lifespan), the take is steeped with soul. Granted there's some circa-1968 shmaltz in the chorus and strings, but I think the horns successfully pull it through.
