so let me ease back into it, and then out again. hopefully this will be an actual return to mog for me instead of the usual drop by... nothing serious right now, just enjoy the video.

2007?

yes, its been awhile.

it seems like i always start my posts like that.

since we last spoke, i went on tour, almost shot my eye out with a BB gun, drank a lot, and decided to move to kansas city MO (starting january 2nd). dont ask its a long story.

i know what you really want to know. what has acoustic country folky indie musician henry daggs been listening to?

lots and lots of death metal, black metal and rap.

specifically death, mayhem, emperor, old dirty bastard, kool keith and especially the entire 23 chapters of R. Kelly's "Trapped in the closet".

so here is "i am the black wizards" by emperor for your holiday enjoyment.

yes i know its been months: 2 quick questions and an update

why is it that all of my co-workers have decided that disco is good?

is this a widespread phenomenon?

i recently bought a BB gun.

late at night i go into my backyard and plug in a spot light and my record player and shoot cans that i set up on an old discarded entertainment center while listening to music. i also drink while i do this. i usually do this by myself.

yes it is the daisy: red ryder 1938 "you're gonna shoot your eye out" model.

aside from that i think im moving to kansas city MO in 2008. more on that later.

"wrestlemania 4000?" or "am i really the assh*le

i was just reading the comments on joxley's post about getting glasses and LyricalRevolution mentioned almost losing a pair of glasses when people started playing the game known as "run forward and smash everyone in front of you game". i had my own experience with that game just the other night.

it was a monday and i had just gotten off of work. i went to the local bar to see if i could still catch oakland california's noise punk heroes, XBXRX. well, just my luck, i have only missed the first band. i had been waiting 5 years to see XBXRX because somehow i missed them the last time they played tennessee (which may or may not have had something to do with the fact that may or may not have lived in the cleveland ohio area at the time). anyway, after waiting through two other noise bands (which i refuse to comment about here) XBXRX finally takes the stage. these guys explode with pure energy and since there is no real stage at this bar we were at the same level as the band and i was right up front dodging the swinging guitar that was right in my face. all of a sudden i get shoved really hard. i turn around and there are three people wrestling on the floor.

i go back to paying attention to the band. out of nowhere i get slammed into again, i look back and wrestlemania has continued. i proceed to try to keep an eye on the band while making sure i dont get dragged into what was by that point a four or five person wrestling match. they knocked over a table, the PA and countless peoples beers. finally i was sick of it so i turned around calmly and faced them. i waited till they rolled around towards me, and i dropped all of my weight onto one of the wrestlers using my knee as the delivering agent. i then proceeded to reach down bounce the guys head off the ground (i did it lightly) and then when he tried to grab me and pull me in i kind of kicked him in the neck, but i swear it wasnt really that hard. after the show i got a lot of dirty looks after the show but my question here is:

am i really the asshole in this situation?

the guys in the band were really cool even though the guy i dropped the knee on was the guy they were staying with that night.

maybe i am the asshole. but really if i am already atempting to enjoy a band without getting hit in the face by the guitar, i dont want to have to worry about what is going on behind me. if i have waited 5 years to see that band i want to see the band.

this thought has plagued me for years

when you think of the supergroup genesis you think of peter gabriel of peter gabriel fame, phil collins of phil collins fame and mike rutherford of mike and the mechanics fame... so who was that fourth original member? well it was tony banks. ive always thought that it would really suck to be the only member of genesis known as ___ of genesis fame. i guess it would suck just as much to be steve hackett as well but probably for other reasons all together. tony banks and mike rutherford are the only 2 members of genesis that have been part of the band for the entire career. so it was like his band and no one can ever remember his friggin name. wow.

i heard that cops dont like music.

this week has been hectic to say the least. i have hung out with people from chicago, LA, athens GA, NYC and florida. three shows booked over three nights. last night's event was bomb the music industry, chotto ghetto and various members of a band called zombie bazooka patrol doing solo stuff in a kitchen that is currently known as the shitfort. it was a house show and i guess the walls were thin because the cops showed up just after chotto ghetto had finished rocking our faces off. so there we are in the kitchen hanging out and waiting for the cops to leave. they left so we figured that bomb the music industry could play half a set electric really quickly and then half a set acoustic. this sounded like a marvelous idea and everyone became very happy. well, it turns out that the cops were just chilling around the corner waiting for us to start up again. BTMI was halfway through their fourth electric song and the long arm of the law came crashing down. the saddest part is that they were just about to go unplugged. the cop was a total dick and made everyone leave including the touring bands. after they had packed all their stuff i asked the police if it was cool if they just crashed at the house. no dice. now im pretty sure that a police officer cannot ask you to leave a private residence unless you are being charged with something or the owner of the residence gets them to escourt you from the property. i didnt argue though because it was my friends house and the cops hadnt issued a citation for the noise so i didnt want to provoke them into doing so.

i was especially pissed because this was my first time seeing bomb the music industry as a full band. the three full songs were awesome and i was really liking that fourth one, to bad the cops made me cut it off. i feel really bad when shit like this happens.

chotto ghetto is definetly worth checking out.

my brain feels fried im just glad i dont have another show booked until sunday.

PS: unlike the picture above cops are not sexy, i just wanted to insure that anna made a comment and i figured the only way to do that would be to post a picture of a buff guy in a uniform. ha ha ha. cheers.

my 12 year search is over (the last piece of my grunge puzzle)

when i was 15 years old i picked up a copy of the deep six compilation. i picked it up because i was a huge soundgarden fan and i was very happy with all of the tracks, but one really stood out. it was a psycho billy song entitled They and it was performed by a band known as the U-men. i began to do a little research and i came up empty handed. i asked everyone i knew and no one had heard of the band or had anything of theirs. i began to search every record store in every city that i went to. even record store clerks looked at me dumb founded. finally 12 effing years later my best friend moves to portland oregon and i tell him that since this band was a pregrunge seatle band he needed to look for those records for me. well, he found 2 records Step on a bug:the red toad speaks (1987) and Stop Spinning (1985). they are amazing. total psychobilly with a heavy lean towards the psycho side. having only heard two tracks from them previous to this i was expecting more of a rockabilly flare ala the sonics (who the band quote as an inspiration). it turns out one of the guys went on to be in the seatle grunge band gas huffer, another one founded amphetemine reptile records and one of them moved to alaska. who knew?

dear promoters, what gives?

i dont mean to stumble into mog once again and just start bitching, but what is with flyers that dont give all the needed information?

im reffering specifically to the forecastle festival.

there are a lot of flyers here in murfreesboro TN that give a lot of information about this festival. i know who is playing, i know the sponsors, i know the venue. but nowhere on the flyer does it say anything about what city it is in.

i know that it is in louisville kentucky because i know where the belvedere is (plus there are enough fluer de lis on the poster to give that away) but no one else that i know in murfreesboro (aside from my friend tyler) knows where the crap this festival is.

what gives.

every time i log on could be my last

call me a fairweather mogger if you will, i mean its pretty apparent that my lack of a computer really cuts into my ability to sign on and participate. maybe that will change but i see the future as this really weird place in which i will have a lot less stuff and even less access to a computer. so i guess i'll just mog when i can for now.

ive been really depressed lately and it has been pretty bad, but i want to write about my totally righteous music day yesterday. it was like a ray of fucking sunshine. the day started out with a free lunch, who says theres no such thing. then christopher's liver pulled into town. i know that seems like an awkward sentance but christopher's liver is a band from athens GA consisting of christopher ingham on guitar and vocals and laura swindall on drums and vocals. they are really amazing with almost constant harmonies yet it is stripped down and real. the deal is they got into town super early so we went down to historic canonsburg and looked at the worlds largest red cedar bucket and learned a little bit about the murfreesboro blacksmiths guild. then we ate goo goo clusters. the show was awesome but the crowd was a little lame seeing as most of my friends were playing wiffle ball in a parking lot instead of enjoying music. i thought that was pretty lame, but christopher's liver was awesome and during my set (which was maybe one of the most drunken sets ive played in a long while) laura was my guest drummer for a song and jacob the sound guy was played drums on another song. the point of this mog is that christopher's liver are not only an amazing band but they are some really awesome people as well. so you need to go see them. the rest of the tour dates are as follows:

david allan coe what have you done

i bought this david allan coe CD the other day.

here is the run down of my experience:

it doesnt say live anywhere on the Cd but it is live

there was a sticker over david allan coe's face on the cover. why is this important? well it is a picture from the concert where this is recorded and it would have tipped me off that not only is this a life recording but it is one that was recorded in the nineties when he was old as crap (he still is old as crap but whatever).

there is a parental advisory on the CD but the one bad word that is used is bleeped out. when you bleep out a cuss word from a live CD you have to bleep the music too which is very distracting.

in the first song he makes a referance to liking the music of kid rock. WTF.

in the hit single you dont even call me by my name he manages to ruin it during the last 30 seconds of the song by breaking into eminem's hit the real slim shady.

so, what does this show us? it shows us that if it aint broke dont fix it i would have been fine with the CD if he hadnt done that last little bit. the version of talking to the blues that is on the CD is actually quite good. as you can see

you cant escape the long arm of the mog.

so i was sitting at the library checking my myspace for business purposes (and i do mean business) when i get a friend request from a beautiful greek girl... oh wait... ive been caught!!! i cant escape mog. their professional bounty hunter anna

was able to hunt me down and reel me back in. damnit.

so i figured i would drop by and say hi. ive been listening to a lot of sludge and doom metal recently... mostly just stoner rock bands like sleep and ohm and that kind of slow crap. but i really want to tell you about this guy:

yes, he looks like a metal head, but no, he isnt one... or atleast not when he is playing music. this is red bear, a singer song writer from la grange illinois(e). i really want to rave about him here but i dont know if i could do him justice... so go listen to the song body parts at:

http://www.myspace.com/redbearperiod

it isnt downloadable and i dont have an MP3 of it which is why im posting the link instead of the song. i would like to submit this song into the best song ever catagory for its simplistic beauty and deep felt story telling (dont worry he still manages to be vague enough that you wont get the full story). im pretty sure i know the story behind the song but i dont know if its the kind of thing that i could share.

now, i guess im off to work... or something.

transcend dental medication

so I was at the dentist's office earlier today and I began to be aware of the music... or should I say muzak. the lady who was cleaning my teeth was singing along to the likes of brian adams, hootie and the blowfish, rod stewart, phil collins and matchbox 20. she knew all of the words. I started thinking about how terrible the selections that were being pumped in to this small room were, especially when coupled together. summer of 69 isn’t a terrible song (its not great either) but when immediately followed by hootie singing I only wanna be with you, summer of 69 becomes unbearable. my first thought was that these stations that are pumped into businesses are terrible, but then I remembered working at a restaurant in dayton ohio. before each shift we would listen to the all funk station or the heavy metal all day station or even the 80's station. at that point I realized that dental professionals are just inherently lame people...

... I'm sorry if my conclusion offends anyone.

HENRY IS A COLLEGE GRADUATE?!

i graduated college on saturday so im going to be around here a lot less and working a lot more. the speaker at the graduation ceremony was george clinton... ok, so before you get all excited it wasnt the george clinton that youre thinking of. it was george s clinton, composer of such memorable movie scores as the santa clause 2 and 3, and cheech and chongs run away hit cheech and chong: the corsican brothers. he also did many "ninja" movies. i dont know what is implied by the word ninja in quotes. he seemed like a really nice guy but his speech was very biographical and not so inspirational.

aside from that i played a show with pony bones from atlanta on friday at a house, saw the pine hill haints and peter and the wolf on saturday, and red bear and super famicom on sunday. the sunday show was really great because it was early as crap and we all drank bloody marys and screw drivers all afternoon. everyone was done by 5PM and then there was an impromptu jam session which included a very bizare cover of the modern lovers' roadrunner that included a miniature guitar, a banjo, some form of chinese flute thing, a recorder, a piano a washboard and some form of middle eastern drum. it was pretty rad. sorry there arent any pictures but this computer is being really crappy right now.

you can blame ookpik for inspiring this one.

does anyone remember JUD JUD? they were an a capella straight edge hardcore metal band... yeah, thats right. it was just two guys steve heritedge on left jud and B. on right jud. jud jud is the vocal interpretation of what a guitar sounds like in a hardcore band. another term for that sound has been jundt jundt or juh juh or chug chug. supposedly they started in 1986, but i am not quite sure that is correct. these guys released a couple of albums and were featured on a couple comps and no idea records released a demos album in 1997, but i think it is out of print. it sounds like it would be really dumb, but its kind of pretty ok.

i havent been able to preview this mp3... i hope it works and i hope you hate it. ha ha. just kidding.

music for granny

last night i played a show in nashville with my dear friends seth moore and joe anderl and my new friend adam torres (who is frigging amazing). the show was at my friend TJ's house and involved free pancakes supplied by joe and adam. before the show we were sitting out front drinking a few beers and this little old lady walks up and demands that we play some music for her because i was holding a guitar. we walked out to the street (because her walker wouldnt allow her to come up to the house), we got her a chair and started strumming. i played a few and then handed the guitar to seth and then to joe. every song she said was worthy of being a number 1 hit "straight to the top of the charts". she swore a whole lot and smoked a lot and spit on the ground. she told us to call her granny. at the end we all jammed out a song about granny going for a walk. her kids drove by a couple times and glared at us disapprovingly, but granny was having a hell of a time and refused to obey their requests for her to come home. in the end we had to walk her all the way home where she introduced us to everyone as her new boyfriends. it was one of the most awesome things ive ever been a part of. later joe pointed out that it would be really nice if granny ran the music industry. "straight to the top of the charts". she also swore a couple times that she had seen me on TV which i assured her was impossible but she thought i was making fun of her and insisted that i shouldnt lie to an old lady because she knows i was on TV. RANDOM!

out of van morrison's first 27 albums only one of them did not chart on the billboard 200... was it avalon sunset? was it veedon fleece? was it Blowin' your mind? no, no and no... it was astral weeks, one of the greatest albums in the world and by far the best thing van morrison ever did. even his first album, which is retardedly called Blowin' Your Mind", made it to #182. astral weeks is often toted as one of the top albums of all time. it is one of the albums i would take if i was going to be stranded on a desert island. so how did this one get passed by upon its release. im just praying that it was a good week in records... is there a way that i can find out what else was released that tuesday in 1968. oh, what i would give to know the roots of this tragedy. oh and yes, i do know how humorous that picture of van morrison is at the top of this post, thanks.

forever and counting... and counting... and counting.

right now the one thing keeping me on my feet and moving at full force is this:

Forever and Counting by Hot Water Music. this was their 1997 release on doghouse records and it is brutal, beautiful, technical and just flat out awesome. i noticed while driving around how much the guitars really create an atmosphere while the bass moves the melodies forward and fleshes out what is really going on. on top of that, the dual screaming vocals really get you completely pumped up and ready for anything. there isnt a single track on this one that falls short of empowering. so, if you ever feel like you have too much on your plate, put this album on and prepare to kick the world's ass. this album really makes me feel like i can take on anything.

so, what do you listen to when you need a good jumpstart?

finals week is almost on top of me and if all goes to plan these will be the last final exams that i have to take for a long time. it is also the time of year that class projects and term papers come due. oh and then there are exit exams... and my job... and my girlfriend. how does this relate to music? well, one of the clubs that i often book will be closed for 3 weeks because they were stupid and sold booze to people under the age of 21. in america, this is a no-no. so, because someone was an idiot, i have to re-book 2 shows short notice. if you live in tennessee and want some bands to play at your house let me know. this is not what i needed this week.

and now im depressed.

very few bands have an effect on me emotionally but as i was driving back from athens georgia a couple days ago i put in a CD of assorted songs by the Mountain Goats that my friend and fellow mogger jen gave me. i was driving (extremely slowly due to traffic) through some form of hellish weather when the song no children came on. ive been horribly depressed ever since. i kept listening to the track over and over and then i started really listening to the lyrics of other songs on the CD. just to think that a song could really put you in a horrible state of depression, that is insane. the really messed up part is that i cant stop listening to it so i start to feel even worse. god, i feel really miserable. here are the lyrics, sorry i dont have an MP3 of it on hand.

no children

I hope that our few remaining friends
give up on trying to save us.
I hope we come out with a fail-safe plot
to piss off the dumb few that forgave us.

I hope the fences we mended
fall down beneath their own weight.
And I hope we hang on past the last exit,
I hope it's already too late.

And I hope the junkyard a few blocks from here
someday burns down.
And I hope the rising black smoke carries me far away,
and I never come back to this town again.

In my life, I hope I lie,
and tell everyone you were a good wife.
And I hope you die,
I hope we both die.

I hope I cut myself shaving tomorrow;
I hope it bleeds all day long.
Our friends say it's darkest before the sun rises;
we're pretty sure they're all wrong.

I hope it stays dark forever,
I hope the worst isn't over.
And I hope you blink before I do,
and I hope I never get sober.

And I hope when you think of me years down the line,
you can't find one good thing to say.
And I'd hope that if I found the strength to walk out,
you'd stay the hell out of my way.

I am drowning.
There is no sign of land.
You are coming down with me,
hand in unlovable hand.

And I hope you die,
I hope we both die.

for the past ten days i have had a sound stuck in my mind. it is the sound of a pedal steel. everywhere i go i hear that sliding sound. i love it and i start whistling the notes that im hearing in my head and everyone wonders what the hell im whistling. last time i got a sound stuck in my head it was a hammond B3 and the time before that was a dub snare hit.

one thing is true. you can always tell how good a pedal steel player is by the absurdity of his shirt. ive never heard this guy play but that shirt tells me he can shread!

easter like sunday morning

yesterday afternoon may have been the perfect easter. i was hard(ly) at work in the pizza parlor with two good friends, no customers and a two beat happening albums (Dreamy and You Turn Me On).

we were making one of the most amazing cheese pizzas ever and it took about an hour because we made the sauce from scratch and had to crush all of the tomatos. but the whole time i just kept screaming "GOD, BEAT HAPPENING IS THE GREATEST BAND EVER" and "GOD, THIS IS THE BEST PIZZA EVER". we began discussing beat happening and something became really clear: Beat Happening is one of the most aggressive bands ever. i know this is most likely the most ridiculous thing i could say about band that is often labeled twee pop or indie pop, but i really see them as DIY punk rock. everytime they play a melody over and over for a long time it is an act of aggression against all of the stereotypical distorted guitars that were clanging in the sea of hardcore and post-hardcore that surrounded them. they were the band that taught me that it doesnt have to be fast, there doesnt have to be a change for a chorus, there doesnt even have to be a chorus, you can drum on an empty bucket of frozen yogurt, you can do whatever it is that you want to do. beat happening makes me extremely happy.

sorry, i couldnt get the video to work right.

eco-what?

every once in a while i stop and ask myself "What the hell am i doing?"

i had a moment like that just the other day while listening to a lecture about techonomics. now dont worry about what the theory of techonomics is, the guy explaining it didnt really know either, so its obviously unimportant. the revolation that hit me was about natural resources, waste, and my music collection.

i own thousands of CDs (i know that sounds absurd but a large portion are stock for my record label), over 400 records and over 100 cassettes. these are physical things that are made through manufacturing processes that use natural resources. i also run a very small record label that is responsible for putting more of these things out into the world. these things also take up a lot of space. now you have never heard me say this before so brace yourself: THE MP3 is looking better and better every day.

here is the problem, i dont have a real computer and i dont have an MP3 player and im not exactly the most tech savy person in the world. if i had it my way i would convert all of my collection and my label operations to digital formats just as a way to be more eco-friendly but that takes money and know how. so WTF do i do.

attempted assault #2

When you look up the band quicksand here at mog you get one entry in which some guy mentions that he is listening to a few quicksand songs and then goes on to talk briefly about AOL musicnow. Then if you look to the left you will see the bands “biography” which is stated to be from wikipedia. Upon reading said biography you realize that you are becoming smarter, you now know what quicksand is… not the band but the actual phenomenon known as quicksand. This is great for learning about geological substances but it really doesn’t do much as far as informing anyone about one of the greatest bands of all time.

Every once in a while a band comes along that changes the way you think and feel and then you look around and realize that not only does no one get the band but for the most part no one has heard of them. For me that would be the band quicksand.

Quicksand was formed in the early 90’s by Walter Schreifels (formerly of gorilla biscuits), Tom Capone (handsome), Sergio Vega (who later played with the deftones), and Alan Cage (later played with seaweed). Their debut album, entitled Slip, was released on polydor when I was 13 years old and it blew my mind wide open. The guitar tones are sonically engaging, the bass lines are rich and complex, and the drums hit hard. One thing really jumps out though, and that is the lyrics. Im not usually much for lyrics which is odd seeing as I am a singer songwriter, but the lyrics on this album are mysteriously intriguing. They are vague yet feel highly personal and it almost seems as if secret knowledge is being imparted on you. As if there is a lesson and you are learning something, yet you can’t tell what that it is.

People often compare quicksand to fugazi, but I feel that this is a disservice. When comparing a band of this nature to fugazi the person receiving the information thinks “oh, this is like fugazi jr. which means it is ok but it is not important whether I listen to this band or not”. This thought however, is wrong. It is very important that you hear this band now! The album Slip might be one of the most under rated and overlooked records of the entire post hardcore music scene. Their follow up album, Manic Compression, is pretty good too, but Slip is pure genius.

I found this CD in my car a few days ago and it hasn’t left my CD player yet, I highly recommend you go buy it now.

what happens when you wake up and you just dont love it any more?

the other day i was at work and someone put on london calling by the clash. all of a sudden my heart dropped and i didnt want to hear it. i used to love this album and many people will call it blasphemy that i cant stand it now. i dont know what happened but somewhere along the line something clicked and now i cant listen to this album ever again. maybe it was all of the arguments that ive had debating whether or not the clash was really a punk band. maybe it was all of the late nights that i spent listening to that album while writing papers in highschool. what ever it is, its over and its kind of sad.

have you ever just woken up and decided it was over between you and an album?

i think im done with brian jonestown massacre too.

having trouble deciding which mp3 player to pick? my buddy casey made this with a couple of friends. it might help clear somethings up for you if you are caught having to choose between an ipod or a zune. enjoy.

goodnight bucket city

if mog and i were in a serious relationship i think mog would be pretty upset with me right now. why? i missed my own six month mogaversary which everyone around here makes such a big deal about. so i guess im a bad mogger.

the realization of this fact made me curious about a couple other things and i came up with one solid question. what is the average mog life of a mogger? i know that murfreesboro tennessee (aka bucket city) used to actually have a notable mog presence, but ive been taking a look around and it seems like most of my buddies have slowed down considerably or disappeared all together. what is up with that?

so i guess we can change our towns slogan from "more moggers per capita than elsewhere" back to "home of the worlds largest cedar bucket"

yet again, i blame he-man

i know that solid arguments can be made denying the fact that the current dirty people who listen to jam bands and smoke a lot of pot are not hippies in any way shape or form, but they are commonly reffered to as such. i dont think a day has passed in the last 10 years of my life in which i havent heard someone claim that they hate hippies. not being one to inspire hate take this in stride as just observation.

fact: the current group of people commonly called hippies where patchouli.

fact: in 1985 the He-Man line of action figures released a not so successful skunk character named stinkor.

fact: stinkor was strongly scented with patchouli oil.

conclusion: some of us just associate the negotive connotations of stinkor with the smell of patchouli.

oh yeah, then there is also the fact that jam bands do not understand that when writing a song sometimes it pays off to get in, say what youve got to say and get out. there just isnt time for a third 12 minute long guitar.

whoa, look at the lights man.

anybody got any good hippie jokes? i'll start off:

Q. how many hippies does it take to screw in a light bulb?

A. none, they just wait until its burnt out and follow it around the country for 30 years.

i woke up bloody and in someone elses house this morning. it was quite the night, ive been told that i took a nap on the hood of someone's car (dont worry it was parked) and i was told a couple other humorous stories that i wish i actually remembered (or better yet wish i hadnt done). what i do remember from last night (before i fought the tree and drank beer off of the dirtiest floor in bucket city) is we versus the shark rocked my face off. they are a four piece out of athens GA that meets half way between brainiac and the dead kennedys. it was powerful, it was conflicting yet it still retained its pop sensibility. my friend matt kurz had warned me that this band was amazing, but i really didnt know what to expect. regardless, i recomend that you take advantage of any chance you get to see this band.

have you ever had a strange dream about a dead musician?

a few days ago i dreampt that i missed a phone call from glenn miller. you know, glenn miller, as in Glenn Miller, the big band leader. in the dream i had just gotten out of class and i checked my cell phone to see if i had missed anything and there it was "1 missed call: Glenn Miller". i tried to call him back but he is totally dead so i couldnt get through.

so, anyone else ever have a weird dream about a musician who has been dead for the past 63 years?

"someone please help me" or "im only U-men"

can anyone get me a tangible copy of any of the U-Men records?

who are the U-Men?

well, the U-Men were a Seattle band during the 80's. their music can be thought of as an extension of the Sonics which later lead straight to grunge. this band and the sonics are the reasons that seattle ended up being so awesome. i discovered the U-men when i picked up the Deep Six comp in the early 90's and i later rediscovered them on Dope, Guns, and Fucking in the Street Vol 1. i have been searching high and low for their albums and EPs for the past 14 years and i have come up empty handed. so, does anyone know anything about where i can get these darn records? does anyone have them? what the F?

supposedly Chucky Boy Records released a U-men compilation in 2000. im guessing it is a career retrospective or something. but i havent seen it anywhere. so what gives?

in da loung... not in da club

during the mid nineties Go Kart Records released a gem of an album known as Come Recline with Black Velvet Flag.

The album is a perfect spoof of Decline of the western civilization complete with interviews interspersed between the tracks. But wait, here is the clincher, all of the songs are covers of punk rock classics done in a lounge style… can you say genius? There are several stand out tracks on this one including: institutionalized (Suicidal Tendencies), I don’t care about you (FEAR), No Values (Black Flag) and Group Sex (the Circle Jerks). I’m almost willing to say that this one is worth hunting down just to hear the lounge version of TSOL’s necrophilic hit, Code Blue. I have 2 copies (both LP) on back order at Hastings… then again, I’ve had those 2 copies on back order for about a year so it isn’t looking good. I already wore out the cassette version that I got in 1996. If anyones got a spare let me know. Ha ha ha.

"schroedinger's new CD" or "my most random ramblings yet"

ok, here is a little thought i was having while dismantling a table with a recipricating saw and a hammer

... yes i was doing my usual. you know, screwing, prying, removing and eventually, reassembling. for some reason while performing this task on a 300 lb table i started thinking about a CD that i had recently purchased. my mind began to wander and i started thinking about the story of schroedinger's cat. at one point i heard a very stripped down version of this little brain experiment in which schroedinger puts his cat in a box then shoots a bullet into the box and begins to wonder whether the cat is alive or dead. the concept of this little brain teaser is at what point does the cat actually become either of the two quantum possibilities. until we have proof, there are two possibilities either we missed the cat and it is just pissed off because it is in a box that is being shot into, or the cat is dead. but, until we look, both outcomes are possible. the idea that schroedinger proposes is about how long 2 possible quantum systems can co-exist.

so, how does this relate back to this CD that i have purchased but havent listened to yet? well, i think i really like this CD, i like the idea of liking it, but i could hate it. so i currently really like, and really hate this CD. im tempted to keep it sealed just to see how long it takes for one of my quantum systems to collapse. i dont know maybe im thinking too much, in fact maybe none of this makes any sense. the rest of the day included moving the mounted heads of 4 deer and a wild boar. i named three of the deer heads and i need a name for the 4th. so far ive got

"buck" owens

"buck" rogers

and

R. "Buck"minster Fuller

so help me think of another deer related namesake to name the last of the deer heads... i was thinking john doe but that ruins my whole buck theme.

and im back

so the past few days have been an exciting whirlwind of nonstop fun. yeah, i said it. played and stayed at a house in dayton called mantasy island... that is not a misprint let me say it slowly MANtasy island. great bunch of people and a great show. saturday the excitement came in the form of a snow and ice storm in fort wayne. my friend and fellow musician, caleb jehl, cooked an amazing meal (and an amazing breakfast) and i think i learned more about song writing than i have in a long time. caleb's new songs are twice as controversial as his old ones and many of them are twice as good. columbus was awesome, andyman's treehouse really is one of the best bars ive been to in a long time. it is absolutely true that there is a tree growing throught the center of the performance room, which is pretty friggin sweet. i got to see my friend joe unveil his new "band", joe anderl and the imaginary friendship choir, which was really great. if blair was there i didnt meet him... he didnt post on mog on sunday either so im willing to pose a theory that he is a bot and that the on previous statements about anna being a bot (made by joxley, yet supported firmly by blair) were really just a cover up for blairs blatant botness. it was a great show none the less and i got fifth place erotic photo hunt on the touch screen machine (yeah blair, go check it, it says henry). we then went back to dayton ohio and played an impromptu show at my friend jenn's house where we were accompanied by liz landis on violin. during one of my songs jenn's cat had kittens, which was absolutely amazing and weird. we also hung out with some people that i hadnt seen in roughly 7 or 8 years during the day. everyone i met on the road was awesome and the hospitality that people showed us was awesome. awesome trip all around. sorry i dont have any photographic proof of anything... seth's the one with the camera.

ok, finally i will fall to the evil's of self promotion... but atleast im giving you a warning statement. the following announcement is paid for by the council for a better tomorrow for henry.

tomorrow morning im going to crawl into my car with my guitar and do what i love to do... thats right, TOUR. despite the fact that anna doesnt get along with minimalistic folk music, i happen to love it and love playing it. so, its spring break and fellow mogger seth moore and i decided to take it north... i dont know why we decided to go north all of my friends are touring the south because its warm, but all of my connections are north, but that doesnt matter because i would rather be cold and see friends than put up with spring break in florida.

its not a full on tour but here are the dates:

friday march 2nd Dayton OH @ Joe Anderl's house

saturday march 3rd Fort Wayne IN @ O'Brien's pub

Sunday march 4th Columbus OH @ Andyman's Treehouse

the rest of the dates fell through as they always do, so its more of a weekender with a couple of bonus stops not mentioned here. if you are in any of those cities and know where any of those places are feel free to stop by and have a drink with me.

we will have split cassettes and CDs for sale.

you can get more info about me and seth at the following links.

http://www.myspace.com/henrydaggs

i know may is a couple of months away, but some of you might need the advance heads up due to your genetic make-up. here in bucket city tennessee (or murfreesboro as some people call it) the rock n roll scene likes to participate in the ever growing national tradition known as moustache may. the origin of this tradition is unknown but people across the country participate. but the general idea is that during may you grow a moustache. it isnt a competition it is more like a social experiment where you band together and fully embrace mustachedom. you dont have to start the month clean shaven so any of you who want to rock it out with your top lip out feel free to start your engines. more info can be found at http://www.moustachemay.com

but bringing this back to music, i wanted to point out how many awesome moustaches have graced the faces of rock n roll... enjoy. and let me know what you think moustaches or if you have some great examples.

so in an attempt to cheer me up last night a friend of mine made a "shitty punk rock mx" which we listened to at work. this CD featured classics like black flag and X, a couple goof ball gems like the Mr. T Experience and a couple that i wasnt familiar with. the most stand out track that i had never heard before was "Life Sucks" by the band Vomit Launch. my friend had made sure to hype this one for me saying that nothing will get you out of a bad mood like a song called life sucks. it kind of worked but what was funnier was when i actually barfed while listening to vomit launch for the first time. dont worry it wasnt triggered by the music just a combination of depression not eating right, being hung over and allergies. well, im in a much better mood today (who knows how long that will last) and i decided to look up vomit launch on wikipedia. heres what they had to say:

"Vomit Launch was formed in Chico, California in 1985 as "an excuse to drink beer." In 1992, the band called it quits and played their last show on December 11, 1992.

Larry Crane, who played bass for the band, now runs Tape Op Magazine"

they went on to list an extensive discography featuring 9 albums/ cassettes, 4 singles and appearances on several compilations. looks like i might have to swing out to chico california to find some of this stuff and to find out more.

this is the closest thing to a picture of the band i could find.

things have been really terrible for me lately. i wont get into a lot of specifics beyond my last post (thats just the tip of the iceburg), but i have found that one thing can really help out when your down in the dumps... loud punk rock. its a wonder how a song entitled depression can pick me up, but it works... and i aint against anything that works. enjoy.

this might not be the best version of this one, but its got subtitles!! ha ha ha.

sometimes you eat the bar, sometimes the bar eats you

if you dont like reading tales of disaster then i dont recommend reading any further, however, if you are interested in hearing how things can blow up in your face, i got it right here for you.

so last night im sitting at my house waiting for ad astra per aspera to pull up. these guys are my favorite band in the known universe, not only because they rock but also because they are some of the coolest people i know. now theyve been on tour for a little while and they were on their way to play murfreesboro tennessee's very own temptation club (a show that i booked roughly a month and a half ago). so, they pull in and we get mexican food and then head to the club. things got fishy right when we pulled into the parking lot. i remember someone saying "are all of these pick up trucks a bad sign". i walked in the door and there on the stage was a DJ with "THE KING OF KARAOKE" written across the front of his little DJ stand. i also noticed a larger number of frat guys than usual crowded around the bar. turns out the show was double booked and a fraternity had paid 200 bucks to get the night.

"mama thought she done called you, but i guess she forgot"

yeah, mama done forgot to fucking call me and i had to pay the band out of my own pocket (this is about honor, the band protested because they knew it wasnt my fault, but i insisted and ended up leaving the cash in their glove box). so, now the one club that i was still happy booking at has fucked me over and im out X amount of dollars to save face. plus ive got other shows booked there through the end of april and i dont know if i can count on them happening.

earlier i was talking to a co-worker and i summed up today as

"its like getting kicked in the ass, being pushed down the stairs and then having to go to work with your ex-girlfriend, and one of those isnt a metaphor".

so, this week officially sucks and ive got nothing left that i can do but open a bar of my own.

the band and i headed back to my apartment where we watched the most amazing movie ever: Sun Ra's Space is the Place.

i was hanging out on mog tonight and i was messing around with my settings when i noticed that i filled out (when prompted) that i was heterosexual. now i know i could have left it blank, but i was wondering what that had to do with anything. i know it most likely has nothing to do with any evil plots or whatever, i just wanted to make sure that mog wasnt going to be sold eventually as a social networking site for depraved sex maniacs... i know i know, we all ready have a lot of hornballs and i have nothing against them, in fact some of my best friends are hornballs. i was just wondering.

so, really, what is up with drummers

Once I was telling a history professor of mine about a spat that I got into with the drummer of an old band that I was in. he replied (really quickly I might add) with this:

“what do you expect man, this is a guy who beats on stuff all day long. Of course he’s got a temper, he’s a drummer.”

Now I know this cant always be the case, but why is it that bands go through drummers more than any other member. You never find a band that has had seven rhythm guitarists, unless there is an inherent problem with one of the main members that makes them hard to work with. Also, it seems as if there are fewer drummers than any other standard rock band personnel.

This means that not only are drummers harder to find than anything else but also they are harder to keep. What’s with that. Now I’m not calling out any drummers right now, I’m just offering some food for thought.

Maybe the fact that spinal tap’s drummer exploded was more of a metaphor.

wow, i just tried to write a mog about a really personal situation (dont worry it was musically relevant) and then i realized that i am still really weird about sharing personal crap (no matter how musically relevant it is) with total strangers. i love you all (ha ha ha) and i will continue mogging, but i guess i am still interested in keeping some form of anonimity online.

hey, think fast, does anybody know why a public computer would only let me save images off of the internet as a BMP and not as a JPG... better question, does anyone know how i can change it so i can save pictures as JPGs? yeah, cause i really dont care why, i just want to know how to change it back.

bang yo head to this!

The year was 1993, a mere 7 years after Run DMC teamed up with Aerosmith to rock the hit single "Walk This Way" in a rock rap tag team mega explosion. The movie was Judgement Night, and the great idea was to couple rappers with popular rock bands to create a memorable sound track. the pairings are as follows:

Helmet and House Of Pain
Teenage Fanclub and De La Soul
Living Colour and Run DMC
Biohazard and Onyx
Slayer and Ice-T
Faith No More and Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E.
Sonic Youth and Cypress Hill
Mudhoney and Sir Mix-A-Lot
Dinosaur Jr and Del The Funky Homosapien
Therapy? and Fatal
Pearl Jam and Cypress Hill

all of these pairings have their pros and cons, some of the songs flat out suck, but no one can agree on which ones they are (except for the therapy?/fatal combo which gets the thumbs down from everyone i have ever talked to). sir mix a lot sticks to what he knows with Freak Momma featuring fellow seatlites Mudhoney... rumor has it that they are actually good friends from before this project, but you cant prove it by me. Slayer and Ice-T couple up to do a medley of exploited songs (which seems like the only correct answer when combining these two acts). in fact, a lot of the tracks on this one stand out, but how is it that cypress hill get 2 spots? they not only get 2 spots but both of them are with really stand out bands, pearl jam and sonic youth. onyx and biohazard had already forged a relationship on the Bionyx remix of the single Slam, they prove to be highly complementary to each other not only on Slam but also on this soundtrack's title cut.

i still want to know who was in charge of picking the singles for this one. it makes sense that the title cut would be a single, but boo-yaa T.R.B.E/Faith No More (im not complaining because i am a huge fan of both of these acts) and De La Soul with teenage fanclub? it would seem like the obvious choice to pick either house of pain/helmet "just another victim" or let Run DMC/living color do it again with "Me, myself and my microphone". i mean run DMC had already set the bar for combining rap and rock so why not? i dont know.

you may ask yourself why i am bringing this one out of the closet. well, a friend of mine pulled it out the other day and started blasting this masterpiece on the stereo at work and we began discussing it. it turns out that i am the only person at work who knew the pairings of the artists off the top of my head. this made me chuckle. then it turns out that i am the only person at work who actually enjoyed the Boo Yaa T.R.I.B.E./Faith No More song. all though i agree that it seems as if mike patton wanted minimal involvement with the process (purely speculation based on the outcome) i felt the track was a really strong choice as a single. however everyone else agreed that it was really similar to the rap rock of today that we all think is crap.

maybe not the strongest video ever, but what else are you going to do when you have an oddball rock band and a couple thousand pounds of samoans. at some point, these guys did an all rap metal album, but i havent heard it.

so, if this sound track was the early stages of the rap-metal, rap-rock revolution, why does the genre currently suck?

from the producers of texas chainsaw massacre

lately ive been just kind of lurking here on mog. sometimes i drop by and click a couple like buttons, sometimes i make assinine comments about something remotely related to the topic being discussed, but it seems apparent that i havent had much to contribute lately. i just wanted to say im sorry for neglecting mog and i will try to think of some really killer posts for the near future. i want to end this mog with 2 questions:

1) if you are going on tour and you called a friend to book you a show in another state and he seems excited and ready to do it but then he stops answering his phone for three weeks, what do you do? you know he can get you something last minute if it comes down to that, but you also dont know if he will ever pick up his phone again.

2) the remake of the hitcher. has anyone else noticed that it says from the producers who brought you texas chainsaw massacre, but their refering to the remake of texas chainsaw massacre? shouldnt the commercial say "the assholes who thought it was a good idea to remake a perfectly good movie and make it not as good have decided to do it again!". so my real question can be summed up in three letters

WTF?

for the power and the glory

for awhile i didnt understand everyone's obsession with journey. it seems like all of a sudden a few years ago journey became everyone's favorite band over night. i spent weeks, maybe even months, trying to get to the route of this. i asked many people "why the hell are you listening to journey?" they all answered with simple answers

"they are so good, man"
"they are so epic, dude"
"they are so cheesey its great, bro"
"they are so bad they are amazing"

and on and on...

when i realized that the new equation was

(bad + camp)x 10 = GREAT

i began to scratch my head again. if this was the case then why isnt molly hatchet the most widely heralded band in all of history. they could possibly win the status of best band ever just on those Frank Frazetta album covers alone. i dont need any music to present this case, i believe the art speaks for itself. if you dont find yourself describing one of these album covers as righteous, i dont know what is wrong with you.

screw you and the groundhog you rode in on

this morning i awoke and there was snow covering the ground. it was early in the morning (for me 9 AM is early) and my girlfriend was overjoyed that it had actually snowed. i however, was not overjoyed about the snow, but it was really nice to see her smile. we went for a walk in the winter wonderland of bucket city and upon arriving back home we began to get into a heated debate about groundhog day. what we were debating i do not know. but im left wondering what the crap does a groundhog have to do with anything. so i looked it up on wikipedia. apparently feb 2nd is a cross quarter day (halfway between winter solstice and vernal equinox)... ok, i follow that. according to european folklore animals have special powers on cross quarter days. then it says citation needed.

in other words... no dice. so i get through a bunch of blah blah blah, and i start thinking "of course the groundhog is going to always run into his hole because there are a bunch of stupid assholes standing around outside". wouldnt you go back into your home if you came out and there was a group of people standing around looking to see what you were going to do.

i got down to the bottom of the page and there were the predictions for 2007 it looks like as far as the reported groundhogs go we have a 6 to 2 split with the heavy weights (Punxsutawney Phil, Staten Island Chuck, Wiarton Willie, Shubenacadie Sam, General Beauregard Lee of Georgia, and Malverne Mel)
leaning toward an early spring and the lesser known groundhogs (Jimmy the Groundhog, Holtsville Hal, and Dunkirk Dave) leaning towards a dissenting opinion of 6 more weeks.

ummmm, ok. their still just friggin groundhogs. i guess im still waiting to hear what balzac billie "the Prairie Prognosticator" from alberta has to say about the whole thing.

".derob teg i semitemos" or "the only time ive ever reffered to led zeppelin as really effing sweet"

right now my brain is fried. ive been thinking a little bit about backwards masking or reverse speech.

www.reversespeech.com describes this as

"If human speech is recorded and played backwards, mixed amongst the gibberish at regular intervals can be heard very clear statements. These statements usually appear in short sentence form and are nearly always related to the forward speech. It appears constantly throughout language, so much so in fact, that it is believed to be a natural part of our speech processes"

apparently when we talk or sing there is a theory that claims that we are encoding messages that we have no control over. you know how sometimes you say something and insert an um or a little noise or a weird pause, these added syllbles and pauses would add elements to the forward speech that would assist in the backward speech coming through if recorded and replayed.

now i know this all sounds like poppycock, but sometimes i get extremely bored, and one of my favorite things to do is to sit back with an ice cold beverage and listen to the vocal tracks of my demo recordings backwards. i actually have heard many things that may or may not be words. i do know that a lot of the time they really really really do sound like words, but it is also safe to assume that any random syllables could generate words if recorded and played backwards. i dont know what i believe. but it sure beats being bored. in fact, sometimes the backwards versions of a song are better than the original.

now im not encouraging anyone to buy a reverse playing machine because they are really worthless if you have a 4 track cassette recorder or any digital recording/manipulating equipment. i am however, encouraging you to go to the following link:

http://www.reversespeech.com/music_reversals.htm

go to the bottom of the page and look at the led zepplin reversals to hear a really effing sweet MP3 of stairway to heaven... played backwards!! its above the popeye cartoon.

"indie rock collective conscious?" or "why does your mix tape sound like his mixtape?"

After class I was perusing the Mog-O-Sphere, when I stumbled across Anna’s post about mix tape rules. As I began to comment, I began to ramble, as I have a tendency to do. I decided that my rambling rant would serve better as a post and spare all of Anna’s dedicated readers from being subjected to my slightly related mix tape rant. So, without further ado, I present to you a post that Mog attempted to leave behind through a conspiracy of technical difficulties, but through hard work and dedication I prevailed and posted my blog…

I was at work the other day, when my friend Wimpy dropped off his weekly Mix CD for the store. This caused everyone to drop what they were doing and check out the track list, which always invokes a series of ooohs and ahhs. A friend of mine managed to push his way through the crowd to the front where he proceeded to make a checklist of bands that he has included on a mix that he had made earlier in the week. Both tapes included 5 similar artists which is roughly a 33.3% rate of similar artists one of them being Ben Folds. This clicked in my head as odd, but as I mentally retrieved track lists from previous mixes that I had encountered I realized that over the past 10 years (since the release of whatever and ever amen) Ben Folds (in some why, shape or form) has been featured on roughly 60-75% of all of the mix tapes/CDs that I have encountered. Then I started thinking about this some more… it seems as if the smiths have a high rate of appearance as well, and there was a 4 or 5 year period when no mix tape could escape the strangle hold of Belle and Sebastian. So, my question is: if all of these mix tapes are made by individuals who pride themselves on their individuality, then why does the track list seem to be dictated by some form of indie-rock collective consciousness? Also, how did the white belt reach indie-iconic status overnight? I could go one but I will spare you all. I guess for now, by default, Ben Folds is…

…The King of The Mix!

"oh sunny ray" or "after the end of the earth"

last night after doing some recording and mixing i came home to be greeted by a nice little red netflix envelope. contained within was one of the most titilating titles i have recently rented: Space is the Place. Space is the Place is a wide array of things, part blaxploitation, part sci-fi part theo-philosophy and 100% brain child of avantgaurd jazz pianist Sun Ra. For those of you not familiar with the work of Sun Ra, it is highly engaging free form jazz most often featuring john gilmore on sax. on first listen some of Sun Ra's compositions might sound like a drug addled traffic jam on mars, however, all of the pieces were practiced heavily and Ra enforced a very strict NO DRUGS policy on his musicians. ive found his work very rewarding to listen to, however, this music doesnt immediately give to the listener, it takes time and energy, but it is well worth it. this film, much like his music, is bizarre. im just going to give the most vague description here:

lets just say there is a music powered space ship, a battle between the pure and the co-opted, an intergalactic employment agency, a plot to bring the population to outer space and no white people allowed. sounds kind of romantic to me. Sun Ra's delivery of some of the lines is a little bit choppy but his imagery as well as his music show the true beauty of his genius.

"too bad im out of tape" or "my friend rob: the super genius"

over the weekend i loaned my tape to someone (tape as in scotch tape, someone as in shane spresser of the velcro stars). then yesterday my friend rob handed me the flyers he had made for an upcomming event that i am putting on. so, i dont have any tape and the trusty staple gun is out of staples... this means i am on an unending search for stray thumbtacks in the flyer walls at school.

now there are a million different ways to make a flyer and rob really knocked me on my ass with this one... apparently there is a movie entitled a man called dagger... all i know is that i am renting it now. some of my friends call me daggers, mostly my girlfriend when she is joking around (by joking around i mean having fun at my expense, but who is keeping score). so, im posting this here not specifically for promotion sake but as a flyer that i got a really big kick out of. enjoy.

"the problem" or "yet another rant"

there are 2 things in life that i have found to be true as far as bars go:

1) if you dont accept credit cards you are a dive bar
2) if you are a dive bar and you charge more than $1.75 for a PBR tallboy, you are an asshole.

how much is a PBR tallboy in your neck of the woods?

second rant:

with all of the buzz about rage against the machine going on i figure this one is relevant. dont get me wrong, i liked the first album, but everything after that... i guess i just wasnt into it.

i still really like inside out (zack's band before rage) but rage kind of slowly lost me. so, i was at work and my boss puts on rage's last album and i start making fun of it. he then says "you liked ICP" and i said "the difference is i WAS 13 you and you ARE 28". then he says this thing that totally blew my mind wide open "next time youre on a treadmill crank this up all the way". now if you know me then you know why this is a ridiculous statement. i smoke way too much to even look at a treadmill. however, ive heard this argument in favor of a lot of music that i am not fond of, so i think im working on what im going to call "the treadmill theory of music". apparently there are some things that only people who use treadmills can appreciate.

aside from my negative tone ive had a wonderful weekend: velcro stars CD release show, black diamond heavies CD release show and fellow mogger leftoverking sent me some CDs of his band as well... all of this adds up to me having a whole lot of really great new stuff to listen to.

Love Songs for mog MOG

well, rawkkiddo was talking the other day about having a mog theme song. that reminded me that i had written a jingle a few months ago. ive been sitting on it out of laziness, despite the fact that i keep aluding to kate that i had something that i wanted to send mog HQ. well, i finally got off my ass and with the help of bawstonsean and the new mog mp3 player thing, it is up. go to the page of bawston_sean to see an embarassing picture of me drunk.

here are the lyrics

i had a girlfriend
i told i was into music
but i did not have a mog
so she thought i was a loser

and then she left me
i got a mog account for free
and now im cooler
thanks to my computer
M O G dot C O M

sorry the backing vocals are a little wonky but i did this while drunk on a four track a few months ago.

i listen to a lot of music, some of it on vinyl, some of it live, and some of it in my head. however, i often find myself here on mog not knowing what to write about. so, for one time only, im going to take down my guard and ask for suggestions and recomendations. over the next month i will try to hunt down copies of things suggested here and i will try to give them a chance. i dont know why i am doing this, but i do know that i am going to regret it and that is just plain funny to me. so, fire away, maybe you will be the lucky one to turn me on to something awesome. if it is something rare or random it would make it easier if you would send me a tangible copy via snail mail... let the game begin. rock.

"the one guilty pleasure to trump all" or "what did he just say?"

disclaimer regarding my disclaimer and post: this post does not intend to promote hate or anything of that sort. i was just surprised by something and thought this could be a humorous way to bring it up... the surprise is that the album that i have tagged this post with actually exists.

at many times someone will be digging through their box of tapes or CDs or digital files and they will say "why do i have this band, oh but its so good, i hope no one sees that i bought it". later they may even admit to a friend that they really like the questionable material. in almost 100% of these cases the band in question is just something campy or dumb that may or may not have been popular on the radio at some time or another. this case is completely different. with my guilty pleasure someone might actually say "henry, you are morally wrong". in my defense i want to preface this with a disclaimer: i do not agree with the political views of any of these bands, i do not agree with the personal value systems of these people. also, i have never purchased ANY of these albums new, because the truth is, i dont want to finance these bands. yes, if you havent figured it out, my guilty pleasure is nazi-punk rock, specifically skrewdriver. i think i can end my post there... i just hope no one who has posted a quilty pleasure takes this the wrong way, but guilty pleasure? get real, atleast vanilla ice doesnt hate people based on their religion or skin color.

"ha ha ha im in nashville" or "henry's day out"

i am currently drunk and in nashville. the day started out normally enough, i was sleeping and all of a sudden i was driving my wonderful girlfriend to the nashville airport while listening to the sleep album sleep's holy mountain. on the way i decided that i was going to spend an afternoon in nashville. little did i know this would end up a whole night. so. i went into nashville fully armed with telephone numbers of people i wanted to hang out with, two of which are moggers the rest of which were not. i hung out at great escape by myself for the next hour or so and i purchased the following four albums: (if you can draw a connection between these four albums i dare you).

bathory: bathory
so i tried to eat sushi with a friend of mine but the sushi place was closed and we ended up watching roman planski's "knife in the watter" at the bellcourt theater, and then somehow i ended up playing a few songs at the coffee shop, caffeine on music row. which was special because i got to play with kyle hamlet from lylas who is my favorite song writer in town, and i also got to hear terry from cut throut junction play a solo set which was equally delightful. i then quickly retreated to my favorite club in the south, the springwater supper club to see some bands that i had never heard of. im going to hold off on speculating on those bands until a later date. at the springwater i managd to get even more drunk and meet up with my good friend and fellow mogger mr. sullivan. we had a great time and i am now typing on his computer. i ended the night listening to sleep's album dope smoker on vinyl. the only defining line of the whole day is that i started it listening to the band sleep and ended it listening to the band sleep. i am confused and drunk right now and i will promptly return to the wilderness where i belong. i have been living the last 24 hours without a moustache or a parachute... so wish me luck.

"i guess its a new year" or "destiny or bullshit..."

so there i was, innocently sitting in the dining room of sir pizza in my beloved town of bucket city. i was sitting in front of the fireplace throwing back a few beers when this song came on the muzak. it was easily recognizable as a fleetwood mac or stevie nicks song and i was just sitting there by myself waiting for my girlfriend to clock out so we could go watch a movie. the song struck me really hard. lyrically it was great and tonally it was reminiscent of good old fleetwood mac. all of a sudden the lights and music were cut off and it was time to go. but i still had to get that song. i did some research and i found out that it was from their 2003 release say you will, yes, i was surprised too that they had a release in 2003. the next day i went to the store and searched the fleetwood mac selection... no dice. i then walked to the front of the store where the new arrival used music is kept. i had already given up on that album and decided i would flip through the new used discs. i put my hand down on the first CD and began to flip it... guess what it was. yup, it was the fleetwood mac album i was looking for. the first CD i touched in the rack was the one i was looking for and it was only 3.99 so i bought it and went out to my car and listened to that song on repeat. i then listened to the rest of the album... this album is a horrific dog turd of an album. what the hell was i thinking buying a fleetwood mac album that came out after 1977. the one song is still alright and at least it was only 3.99 but i have to say, the next time destiny is staring me in the face, im gonna have to kick it in the balls and say "thats for that shitty fleetwood mac album you convinced me to buy" before considering to continue. thank you for your time. this has been my first official complaint of 2007. ill see you all around the 16th... im heading back out into the wilderness.

"how could i have done it?" or "forgive me moggers for i have sinned"

over the past few days i have been mogging from my parents old house as they move and settle in to a new one. there is no computer in the new house so my mogging time is limited... however, there are speakers on this computer!!! i know i know, not a big deal right? well, since spetember i have been mogging speaker free because i use a lot of public computers and i rarely have headphones on me (dont ask why, i dont know). i have some how managed to survive souly on my large mental library of sound bites and useless tidbits of information to remind me about each band or some video i might have seen (yes sometimes i watch youtube videos that you all post without sound and just play the song in my head, weird huh?). but these past few days have been a glorious burst of sound as i have been able to jump around from mog to mog like a musical butterfly sucking pollen from your buttercups (ummmm maybe that sounds a little nasty). i have watched countless you tube embeded videos and listened to many samples of songs, it has been magnificent. i learned that i like andrew bird... and i watched a video that reminded me of home (or friends or something) and i just wanted to say that it feels like my eyes are fully open.

the lesson of the day? i am never leaving my apartment without headphones when i am heading to the computer lab ever again. thank you for your time and thank you for your posts.

awhile back someone posted a mog about strange rumors that float around about random bands and musicians. i dont remember who it was, yes i know im a bad mogger for this, but i heard a great one (by great i mean absurd).

someone told me that andrew WK shaved his head and beard, but he wears a wig and fake facial hair in order to look like Andrew WK for live shows and interviews. i dont really believe this but i would love it if someone could confirm it or deny it... because i really want to pretend that it is true just for the sheer fun of it.

"antiquity" or "what the hell did i just find?"

ive been helping my parents move some crap to their new house, and the most exciting moment so far was when i found my great grandfather's 78s. and im not talking any old records that play at 78 RPMs, these things are about a quarter inch thick... seriously. it is nuts. i went crazy when isaw them, at first i didnt even know what they were. the labels are hard to read but they obviously say edison across the bottom and have a seal on them that says "this ___ is sold by edison ___" and some other stuff. one of them is american war songs

the label looks like this but it seems to actually be embossed on the record... black on black... the picture of edison is on the other side and instead of the other thing it has a sheild with a bunch of words in it. whatever. i also found a 45 of my grandfather. it was a USO service provided by the salvation army that allowed service men to record messages and send them to their relatives during WWII. pretty interesting.

"thanks spencer" or "my current love affair with andrew WK

this post was inspired by spencer owen, i dont know if he brought up andrew WK as a joke or not, but regardless...

when i first heard andrew WK i was amused yet not exactly moved to buy the CD... this was when party hard was the single. over the next few years i heard many interviews and became intrigued with this man and his philosophies on life and music. he struck me as a genuine person who happened to fall into the lime light almost if by sheer accident with his positive motivational approach to rock n roll. i think the record labels and press realized the out of place nature of his music in the current music scene and he quickly fell out of the limelight. recently ive come across several touring musicians who had their own personal andrew WK stories, each one more wild than the last. while working at a pizza joint this year, i was feeling really down in the dumps. a friend of mine put on the party hard EP and all of a sudden i was dancing while making pizzas and i was feeling really good. i cant confirm most of the stories ive heard about andrew WK but i can confirm that his music has a medicinal effect on bad moods and blue feelings. andrew WK i salute you. i know this isnt the most well written mog i have ever posted, but i am tired and i dont care. i just wanted to get this sentiment out there... right now i am listening to the streaming files of "Close calls with brick walls" on mister WK's website thanks to spencer... spencer, i salute you.

"71 miles up the road" or "looks like ive missed more than i ever have before"

im currently 71 miles east of my usual mogging location. i refuse to give a name to the town in which i am currently staying but i gaurantee that it is not for any clandestine reasons. i have been away from mog for several days now and it looks like ive missed more posts than ever before and since i dont think im going to have regular access to a computer for the next 9 days i probably will never catch up.

on my drive across the state of tennessee i had a chance to listen to the trojan dub box 1 box set. it is 100% killer, i assure you that if you are in the right mood this box set will get you high without herbal aid... it is really that good. we are talking about a run through of some of the hardest hitting dub proffessionals including king tubby, the aggrovators, gregory issacs, the upsetters... the list goes on and it is a whos who of the dub world. then i put on another disc that i will not name for the sake of making this post fun... the band is the answer to the following question:

which band not only shared a practice space with black flag, but also a drummer in 1984?

as i was driving i was thinking about all of the useless rock n roll trivia that we store in our brains. what is your favorite useless rock n roll factoid? do you know the answer to mine? it is always amazing the amount of truly useless crap we remember. makes you wonder what you could do if your brain was freed of all of this trivia... we could all be rocket scientists man!!! woohoo!!!

"henry's mog wish list" or "santa hyman, ive been good, i swear"

this is really not a typical post for me, but for mogmas (as ive seen it reffered to) i want the following mog features.

i want to be able to edit my comments on other peoples pages (i could see why this might cause continuity problems so i understand but i swear i just want it for grammer and spelling corrections)

i wanted something else too, but i cant remember.

oh, and fedge really really wants to be able to search for other peoples comments in search engines for the purpose of following the trail of favorite moggers despite not being aware of the post that they comment on.

and i want moon boots.

dont worry mog staff, im used to being told that i cant have what i want, this is all in good fun and not meant as a hey, gimme more stuff, as the good parents that you are i feel as if i have been provided for beyond what was necessary. thanks.

other moggers out there, what do you want?

i dont know who made this art, and i know that i am infringing thier copyright but i think it is the only santa related picture that screams MOON BOOTS.

"i feel steam rolled" or "worst christmas song EVER!"

as a child i grew up in an audiophile household. in his spare time my father sold stereo components, mostly high grade stuff. he only really did this in order to get great deals for his own home set up. this means that there was always music playing in the house, most of which was pretty good (or atleast i have a soft spot for it just because it represents my childhood, but there was some honestly good stuff in there, i swear). the one time every year that didnt synch with the typical year round decent music listening was christmas. during the christmas season we were treated to the hi-fi stylings of manheim steamroller christmas, which is the first of seven christmas albums by the band.

i guess they found their nitch in praising the birth of the christ child in an audiophile hi-fi format, but i still immediately get noticably irritated whenever the first track cuts through the air.

my dad's current hobby is guns... if he pulls out that album this year im going to combine both hobbies and go audio postal. bye bye record machine!!

two words singles club. no no no, not a place to meet hip chicks and dudes in your area, a membership program that entitles members to a new single (as in 7" record baby) every single month of the year. its genius. it is my dream to run something like this. so, if anyone wants to give me the money it would cost to do i would be more than glad to do it.

oh, one more thing, i was wondering a few months ago why everyone all of a sudden was into dead moon... then it hit me, they are now on sub pop. which i only found out while talking to boston sean at the local record store. just when i thought the band was 100% dead (careerwise) they get bigger than ever. just goes to show you.

"i gave it some thought" or "trash wins again"

since my last post i gave the question "what is the greatest song ever?" a little bit of thought... and really, i would have to say that it is "trash" by the new york dolls. hands down.

on a side note, i am about to embark on a quest that i have always wanted to undertake. i have decided that i am going to write a book. not only am i going to write a book, but i am going to combine the activity with my favorite past time: talking shit about the beatles. i know this isnt going to win me any popularity contests, so dont be expecting any excerpts to be posted on here, i dont want to start any fights.

"greatest song ever?" or "what the hell is wrong with me?"

if someone were to ask me on the spot "what is the greatest song ever written?" i would immediately reply "(don't fear) the reaper". this is if i were to give my answer zero thought. if i were to my answer any thought what so ever, my answer would be something completely different. in fact, if i were to put any thought into this (don't fear) the reaper wouldnt even be considered in the running.

however,
mojo ranked the song 80 in the 100 greatest singles of all time
rolling stone ranked it 397 in the 500 greatest songs of all time
and also called it "best rock single" of 1976.

"it is an honor" or "what do you mean who the #@*& is that?"

tomorrow night i have the honor of sharing the stage with Joe Jack Talcum, former member of the Dead Milkmen at the only legitimate place in town, grand palace. this is a really cool thing and i am really happy about it. but i am a little confused about one thing. i understand that not everyone knows the line up of certain bands, so when i say Joe Jack Talcum and people say "Who?" im not too worried, but when i quickly answer "Joe Jack Talcum, of Dead Milkmen fame" and they again ask "Who?"... thats when i begin to ask myself if im really that old (especially when compared to my college peers, many of which are kind of still fresh out of whatever). i have a lot of friends who actually view their lives in two parts, they have their life before they heard the album big lizard in my backyard and their life after hearing that album, and now there are kids who havent heard it, or who hear it now and say "i dont get it".

it is definitely an album that came at exactly the right time. i am trying to think of something that has come out recently that is so fun yet still relevant to what is going on in music today. im coming up with nothing.

"i dont want to get arrested" or "mogospherically yours"

yeah, i dont know if anyone else mogged about this, but in the past two days i have been surfing the mog-o-sphere and i have stumbled across two pictures that some may or may not find offensive. one was a picture of the britney spears slip (or lack there of) and the other was of courtney love's right breast. i am personally not offended in the least, but i use public computers. this means that if anyone walks by while i happily surf the mog-o-sphere i could be reported, escourted out of the library by security and written up as a potential sex offender/deviant. i personally am not anti-porn, in fact i will admit that i enjoy pornographic material, but i will also be the first to say that it is not exceptable to everyone and that people should not unwittingly be exposed to it. providing links that explain that it is not safe for work (NSFW, i believe is the proper tag), is acceptable. this way people who wish to access the material can and people who do not wish to access the material can easily avoid it. i understand that both of these incidents were music related and valid for discussion within the music industry and especially on a music culture community site like this, in fact i would love to take a moment to salute mogger Adam B at Y Rock on XPN, for his tasteful picture free post entitled, "Yeah, um, about bringing that sexy back…". this post managed to provide a forum for the topic, without subjecting those of us who shouldnt (or dont want to) see these pictures. i dont want to tell people how to mog, but sometimes it is an issue where there is something at stake. i also want to reitterate that i am not personally offended by the subject matter, but i would love to continue to be able to mog without worrying about someone seeing something on the computer screen and then over reacting.

after typing this i am almost positive someone must have mogged this before me, so forgive me if it seems that i have plagerized your post or comment. i dont know what comments were commented on said mogs because i had to avoid looking at them because of my situation.

(image of big blue whale deleted)

PS dont ask me why there is a picture of a big blue whale on this, it was loaded onto the computer by some other user for purposes that only god and facebook probably know.

i guess miss piggy might be more appropriate... or inappropriate. i hope this image doesnt offend you blair... because i'll be gone all weekend and i'll have to leave it to MOG HQ to delete it if you complain.
