THE MUSIC BLOGGING HIVE MIND

"guilty pleasures" or "we find ourselves in dire straits"

Posted over 2 years ago
often times i find myself at work and listening to music in the back of the house. i work in a pizza joint where we listen to a stereo in the back while the muzak plays in the front. many times i joke about the music in the dining room and often i accuse the people who are our customers of having terrible taste in music (even though i know they have no control over what plays, its a joke of mine). but, every once in a while, i will walk out into the dining room to check on the salad bar or clean something up or even just for a change of scenery and i will be hit by a totally awesome song. whenever this happens i tend to stand against the wall and smoke a cigarette until the song is done. this has been happening more and more lately, and everytime it has been the same band. dire straits... did some muzak law just pass that has upped the percentage of dire straits tracks per day. it is usually sultans of swing, or walk of life, with an occassional money for nothin' and on rare occassions it is So Far Away. mark knopfler is seriously one of the best song writers in rock n roll history. rolling stone listed him as 27th all time greatest guitarist. there are many names that beat him that i might contest for a little switcheroo but kim thayil from soundgarden made the list, as well as gregg ginn (100 and 99 though they deserve higher too). does dire straits stir anyone elses blood? i still dont understand why these songs have such a grip on me... it is probably the music in my collection that is least similar to anything else i have, but i love it.

  2. lemontwist says I have their best of collection and I dig it for a drive every now and again. But it doesn't have the same zap it used to when I first started listening to it.

  3. QueenofHell says I love Dire Straits - not only because I love the songs, but also because my mum is a huge fan and it reminds me of being a kid. And Mark Knopler is a Geordie - as am I. It is not a guilty pleasure - it is pure pleasure.

  4. steph38 says I had this album, probably it's with my casettes still. My favorite dire straits song has to be romeo and juliet. I think sometimes a song must be heard out of context for you to appreciate it. You make me want to hear the whole album. Where are my casettes...

  5. sentinel329 says Knopfler is a seriously good songwriter. If you get a chance, check out some of the stuff he's done as a solo artist.

  6. MadMike4 says Give the cd "Making Movies" a good listen. Very solid record. That and the first are the best. I was obsessed with the debut during my first semester of college.

  7. extraordinarypoems says Today I had lunch at Schlotsky's (their sandwiches are my favorite in the world), and they were playing "Only the Lonely" --- I have no point except to tell you that I always pay attention to the music in restaurants. Glad you have a good listen now and then. ONLY THE LONELY by The Motels We walked the loneliest mile We smiled without any style We kiss altogether wrong No intention We lied about each others drinks We lived without each other thinkin' What anyone would do Without me and you Chorus: It's like I told you Only the lonely can play So hold on here we go Hold on to nothin' we know I feel so lonely way up here We mention the time we were together So long ago, well I don't remember All I know is that it makes me feel good now Repeat chorus
