I haven't posted in quite awhile, mostly because I don't have internet access, so I'm posting this by other means. OK, Drive By Truckers. The name turned me off for awhile, but ever since I heard them I've been hooked. Maybe I'm a sucker for dual singers, which is something they do, but its a little more than that. Blue collar lyrics, simple but excellent muscianship, and after hearing the new album maybe the playing ain't that simple. Anyway, this is really a great band, the more I listen to them the more I like them. Some of the songs I might describe as touching, some I might describe as heartbreaking, and I think this is the appeal of DBT. This isn't exclusive music, most people can relate, and it sounds great. I wouldn't call it southern rock, but southern is gonna be part of it because they are from the south. What got me is a song one of 'em wrote about painting, house painting, which my Dad does, and ever since then this is one of my favorite bands. The artwork is great too. I would recommend all their records, but start with "Decoration Day", its the best. Don't be turned off by their name, this is one of the most talented and smartest bands around. Just 'cause it has a southern accent doesn't mean it ain't smart, because it is. Also, once I get reliable mog access again, I'm gonna have a lot to say.

yo - www.letthereberocktober.com - check it! Free live/rare MP3 near 'bout every day this month. DBT rule - see the DVD from the 40 Watt if you haven't, and see them LIVE. I can't wait through they swing through here again - I'll crawl over the proverbial broken glass to get there, and be healed by Patterson, Jason, Cooley, Shanna, and Easy B when I make it there.

I have a massive musical hard-on for DBT. My buddy saw 'em in Detroit last night ... 2 1/2 hour set that included an apparently wicked cover of Alice Cooper's "I'm 18" ... Good stuff.

DBT is great, though I think The Dirty South is by far their best effort.
I've never been a big fan of southern rock either, though I do have a soft spot for Tom Petty and Neil Young. The difference with DBT is the honesty and lack of pretense. I often describe Drive-by Truckers to my friends as "like Lynrd Skynrd if they didn't suck."

anyone who HASN'T heard Southern Rock Opera, it's the best. They're the best songs live, too. How many bands do you know of that have THREE great songwriters? And they don't seem to fight, as do some bands, over who gets to put their songs on albums - they just split it up equiably, and the best songs win. Patterson's the best, but I like storytellers - part of my Southern heritage, I guess. And, they address the modern South, an everchanging place, with traditions and heritage being superceded and lost every day.
