the perfect song

Posted over 5 years ago
i was driving down the road listening to the radio yesterday when 'a day in the life' came on. it hit me, after the final note of that song, that 'a day in the life' might be the perfect song. it's obviously not perfect in terms of what they might teach you in a songwriting workshop, what with its non-traditional structure, and its song-within-a-song approach. but that's exactly what makes it perfect to me. it somehow, masterfully does all the great things that music can do in one song: great melodies, stellar orchestration, visionary production, mystery, tragedy, psychedelia, sorrow, hope, simplicity, grandiosity, etc. it is a fully realized epic song that doesn't need to go on for 9 minutes to get there. and that last bit with the swirling, swarming orchestra and the final piano note - you couldn't do anything as kickass today with the studio trickery we have at our fingertips.i really don't think there's a finer song out there that demonstrates so much, so skillfully and elegantly, without trying too hard, or coming across as total bullshit. if anyone came close it was brian wilson. but that's another story.

  1. swangie says This might be a pointless comment but... I've loved the Beatles for as long as I can remember and when I was a kid my sister and I would listen to that song on record and learned that song and sang it with my dad... Just a flash back and an agreement that that song rocks!

  4. lemontwist says I'm gonna have to listen to this track again, I don't know all Beatles tunes by heart. Awesome description. :)

  5. nicki says I've said it somewhere else before, and I'll say it again: "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes." Very close second to me.

  6. El Monko and Son says Nicki should also have said "Ghost/Untitled Track" from Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. I've been been gone a while, glad to see you're still Eshepping it up, yo.
